It’s really nice to have a book focused on Dad’s interactions with Baby. So many books only mention or show Mom, so books like this are a rare treat. And of course I love that the beaver is one of the featured Daddy-Baby pairs in this book. That said, a lot of animal fathers are not really involved in raising their young, so I wish this focused on animal dads that actually are involved. And I’m annoyed that they called a baby beaver a “pup” instead of a “kit,” although maybe “pup” is a regional variance I’m not familiar with. Still, a solid book with cute illustrations and lots of opportunities for Daddy cuddles!
After describing several daddy animals cuddling their young, the last page ends with the line, “Just like my daddy cuddles me!” I proceed to give the child reading with me a big hug. I’ve been reading this since my oldest was a baby. Great for daddies to read with their babies / young toddlers. It’s been a favorite among both my kids and I for when we want a short read.
It's hard to find a board book that features a dad instead of a mom. Even the books on "generic" subjects, with no hint of mom in the title, will work in a sneaky mom mention when someone is "getting a kiss from mama" or "mommy makes a big bowl of your oatmeal." She's everywhere! If you want a dad book, you have to seek it out intentionally which is what I was doing when I came across Daddy Cuddles.
Each two-page spread of this book features a different daddy/baby animal pairing cuddling in the way that is particular to that species. Daddy tiger is giving a headbutt to his cub, daddy monkey is swinging his baby around on his back, etc. The illustrations are simple, with clear depictions of the animals and plain, bold background colors. It's a crowd favorite in my house because every page involves making a new animal sound together, and the final page "just like my daddy cuddles me!" involves a cuddle attack between both parties.
Highly recommended for the daddy/baby pairing in your life!
So I actually like the illustrations and think the level of simplicity is perfect for a board book—but the daddy beaver "cuddling" his baby looks more like a reluctant, deer-in-the-headlights father suddenly handed a poopy newborn and he doesn't know what to do with it. My husband and I had a good laugh over that page.
I also had a few issues with the thought that in nature, most "daddy" animals aren't that involved with their young, but my one-year-old doesn't really care about that yet.
Overall, a sweet and simple board book featuring daddy animals and their babies.
Synopsis:"Animal babies are so adorable that their daddies can't help but cuddle and love them. In this celebration of parental love, each daddy shows how much he loves his baby in his own special way."
My Review: A cute book, some of the same images as Daddy Kisses though, I would have liked it to be a little more unique. That said, Munchkin still enjoys the story and pictures. I do love the fact that daddy can get involved too.
It's hard to find a book that features daddies instead of mommies, so for a twist, try Daddy Cuddles by Anne Gutman. Each two-page spread of this book features a different daddy/baby animal pairing cuddling. The illustrations are simple with clear depictions of the animals and plain, bold background colors, and the brief text provides opportunity for ad-libbing animal noises of your own.
This book is currently my son's favorite story to read at bedtime. It is a cute book which shows different animals and how the fathers cuddle with their babies. Recommended for ages 1-4, 3 stars.
