Failure to Atone is Dr. Allen Hassan's graphic memoir of the trials and tribulations of a Volunteer Physician for Vietnam on the front lines of a no-holds-barred war, and of a courageous people's battle to survive. Two years out of medical school, as a doctor from a small town in Iowa, he volunteered for an American Medical Association program to help the war-damaged civilians of Vietnam. Even for a tough former Marine Sergeant, the experience of trying to give civilians good medical care in the middle of a ferocious war was a difficult, life-changing experience. In a poorly equipped jungle hospital, Dr. Hassan found himself the only medical doctor in town for hundreds of old people, women and children horribly wounded during the height of the Vietnam War. As a doctor struggling to treat the civilians of South Vietnam, Dr. Hassan battled tropical diseases, primitive sanitary conditions, and all varieties of war wounds from an endless stream of patients wounded by the war. Performing emergency surgeries deep into the night, in unspeakably primitive conditions in a small jungle hospital near the demilitarized zone near North Vietnam, he worked night and day as the only doctor in a hospital in the jungle to save lives, only to see many slip away. The atrocities and brutality he saw and experienced left Dr. Hassan forever opposed to the horror and tragedy of war. Failure to Atone tells the story of those trying war years for the first time, and brings to light the hell, the horror, and the heroism of war.

Cuốn sách kể về cuộc đời của vị bác sĩ người Mỹ và trải nghiệm của ông suốt thời kì đau thương nhất của cuộc chiến tranh Việt Nam ngay tại đất nước xinh đẹp này.
Quãng thời gian công tác tại Quảng Trị đã thay đổi niềm tin và tính cách của ông, kèm theo đó là những kí ức kinh hoàng mãi đeo bám ông đến tận khi hòa bình đã được lập lại.
Lí do tôi đánh giá cao cuốn sách là vì tác giả Allen Hassan có xuất thân là quân nhân thuộc binh chủng Thủy quân lục chiến của quân đội Mỹ. Những bỡ ngỡ, nghi ngờ về mục đích của quân đội Mỹ của chính cựu binh sĩ này và nỗ lực đi tìm công lý cho những người vô tội đã bị sát hại tàn nhẫn đã cho thấy rõ sự phi lí và vô nghĩa của cuộc chiến tranh Việt Nam. Mất mát lớn nhất trong cuộc chiến là mạng người và cảnh tượng chỉ biết bất lực nhìn bệnh nhân của mình rời bỏ trần thế mà bản thân không thể làm gì do điều kiện không cho phép thực sự là nỗi ám ảnh lớn với một vị bác sĩ tận tụy như ông Hassan.
Đây là cuốn sách mà tôi sẽ đề xuất với mọi người bạn mà tôi biết. Nó đem lại cái nhìn thực tế, sâu sắc và ám ảnh về cuộc sống thời chiến và những kí ức ấy mãi đeo bám người ta đến tận sau khi cuộc chiến kết thúc. Đồng thời cuốn sách cũng đề cập đến nhiều cột mốc lịch sử quan trọng giúp việc tiếp cận các sự kiện lịch sử trở nên dễ dàng và dễ nhớ hơn.

Đọc xong tự nhiên nhớ ra một câu đại loại như vầy (không nhớ là của ai): không thể xoá bỏ quá khứ nhưng cũng không thể để quá khứ trở thành hòn đá cản đường sự phát triển, chỉ có thể gác qua một bên, lấy đó làm bài học mà buớc tới.

As a Vietnamese wanted to know the different perspective about the war, especially the mindset from the other side of win-lose definition, this book is highly recommended.

Really dedicated doctor and also a warm-hearted man. It would haunt me for long time about the scene of love and children from the book. That shows in details and sinking in emotions.

There is not much about weapons, technology here. It’s simply about daily work, personal experience through war though the picture of war and local life displays purely honestly. Straight, clear and emotional as the personality of the author. Just gentle go along and stay deep in the bottom of our heart.

A pretty work of Allen Hassan.
The war was too horrific, there was nothing there I could sympathize with. Those people who made it up were just disgusting.
After this book, I realized how lucky I am. I am not rich, but at least I live in peace, I have my family, I go to school everyday, learn new things and visit new places as much as possible. Is that pretty much happiness? I get lucky, just get lucky.

Incredible book ! a lot of obsession is left after closing a book. It inspired me to read more book of Vietnam War
