After learning all about the relationships within the group in the last book, I arrived at the start of this story to find that those relationships have all been devastated by an event which happened off page. What actually happened is revealed as the story progresses and the work begins on rebuilding the relationships. The pace of this book was much faster than the previous one and yet still it seemed to take a long time to get any significant interaction between Nick and James. The conclusion of the story was unexpected and I am left wondering about the future for these people.

Chronology-- set in the FUTURE

Supernatural content -- NO

Kink levels -- very high. The upper echelons of the future world governing cabals are like a parallel world run on the principles of BDSM. There is gender swapping and tremendous humiliation of a sexual nature. We are meant to wonder whether power and its abuse can corrupt absolutely, or whether the discipline is in the end contained by the forces of love.

Suspense levels-- very high. In this volume, Nick's mentor has lost his moral and spiritual center and falls into degradation, to the great sorrow, and even injury, of his lieutenants in charge of the Confederate States of America. Through residence at a secret Italian estate for the leaders of every global region, Nick's training continues in the hands of others even as his beloved finally finds healing and redemption at an extreme price.

The only other title by Angelia Sparrow set in this universe, other than a few short stories in our anthologies, is Glad Hands at Ellora's Cave. But that is about two completely different lovers from a different nation, escaping ambush in the CSA. To understand Nick Boyd's world, you must fly overseas for Niko-Chan. It will wring you out, but when you come out the other side you will be healed.
