hilariously old school, but some good classics.

Fabulous vintage cookbook.

Over the past year, I've been cooking through this cookbook. The recipes exemplify the high quality of Betty Crocker. In other words, the recipes work. I've yet to find a recipe that doesn't work. However, you may or may not like the taste.

In my opinion, my modern taste tends towards more spice. The recipes are a tad bland, but easily fixed.

One major joy is ... there are no unusual ingredients. Everything is easily obtainable except for discontinued Betty Crocker items, and this book does not rely on Betty Crocker food items. Usually, the book provides instructions for cooking from scratch for the rare Betty Crocker food items.

And, of course, the recipes may not reflect one's particular idea of healthy eating, but many are easily adjustable.

You will find basic recipes, and also a few oddities from midcentury. I have been told in no uncertain terms that I will not be trying out the "Jellied chicken" recipe. ....

We really enjoyed "Chinese Beef and Rice". And, "Pineapple Burgers" although not perfect for us, is quite tasty, and we've been improving our own version as we really like it.

Keep in mind, as a "Dinner for Two" cookbook, the recipes are sized for two people, but they are also presented as meals so they include an entree, sides, and a dessert. I love this format, but the quantity recommended, if you made the whole meal, would satisfy a hungry man who spent his day doing heavy labor. I, being a lady who needs to lose weight, needs to trim these meals.

Many of the recipes have color photographs with quaint place settings. These photos are a delight to peruse as well as the recipes. There are also nice line drawings, although it's my understanding that an earlier version has funner line drawing.

This cookbook is a delight to explore midcentury cooking.

This is another nice cookbook for couples. The recipes are mostly simple and, as might be expected of a Betty Crocker book from 1964, traditional. I just finished a Salisbury Steak recipe that was very much like my mother used to make.

Like the Southern Living counterpart, it assumes little in the way of experience, even including a detailed recipe for cooking rice.

The final chapter highlights how long people were expected to maintain a library. They could expect to use this cookbook both at the beginning of their family and for cooking for two after “your family is grown and has gone away” and “you face the task of learning again to cook for two.”

The illustrations are nice, too.

This is a great cookbook for starting out. There are a lot of staple recipes in here that can be used all the time. Some of our family favorites are Autumn Soup, Stuffed Peppers, Oven-Fried Chicken, German Potato Salad, Meat Loaf, Macaroni and Cheese, and the gravy recipe has endless possibilities for white sauces.

If you are looking for new ideas for cooking with hamburger (aka ground beef), you'll appreciate this cookbook for newlyweds from the 1960s. It was a lot of fun to browse through it to see how our tastes in foods has changed in the last 60 years.
Thank you to my mother for giving me her copy.
