Problemoids Grade 4 Math Challenge

Rate this book
The Problemoids Grade 4 Math Challenge book engages children in high-level thinking about challenging mathematics, mathematical reasoning, and general logic problems by focusing on developing and using problem-solving strategies, not on memorization or operations. The book contains 36 problems, with four extension problems called “Looking-Back Questions” for each one, for a total of 180 problems. The looking-back questions build on the main problem and on one another, allowing children to use the problem-solving strategies that they are acquiring in progressively more complex and challenging ways.

Each main problem contains up to four hints for solving it. The first looking-back question also contains a hint, but the rest of the looking-back questions do not; rather, they assume that children have discovered the trick to solving the problems using the hints for the previous problems in the set. All of the hints contain one or more of several problem-solving strategies designed to help children figure out the steps necessary to arrive at a solution. However, most of the problems can be solved in a variety of ways, and children are encouraged to use the strategies that work best for them.

The topics covered include sets, numbers and numeration, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics. The focus is heavily on mathematical reasoning.

The Math Challenge book is the student book; the Math Mentor book is the instructor manual, which contains the answers to all of the questions and explanations for solving them. Problemoids will challenge children while providing them with opportunities to build their problem-solving skills—skills that they can apply in a variety of both academic and real-world contexts.
