Fifteen-year-old Indigo Summer's world finally seems to be going in the right direction: She hooks up with the star linebacker on the high-school football team, gets a date for homecoming and makes the high-school dance squad all in the same week. But sometimes things are just too good to be true. After football star Quincy Rawlins abruptly dumps her for a girl who is willing to put out, Indigo's popularity and self-esteem take a nosedive. When her perfect world falls apart, Indigo turns to the one person who seems to have his head on straight—her next-door neighbor, sixteen-year-old Marcus Carter. The problem is, now that Indigo realizes what a great guy Marcus really is, so does someone else.

I just finished reading "Indigo Summer", by Monica Mckayhan. This book was awesome and i enjoyed readingit. Indigo Summer is fifteen years old and her best friend, Jade just moved away because it was hard for her mothr to pay the rent and her parents divorced, which was also very hard for her. Indigo missed her, but she was happy to have the perfect and popular boyfriend and his name is Quincy. After about two weeks of them going out, Indigo realized that he was not a good or supportive boyfriend and one of her good friends, Marcus tried to tell her, but since Marcus liked Indigo, she thought Marcus was being envious so she ignored him and continued to go out with Quincy. She finally rewalized he was really bad with her own two eyes and felt guilty of blaming Marcus when he was actually right. Marcus and Indigo ended up going out. The ending was amazing and i wanted it to continue.
Indigo Summer's is about a girl name Indigo and at first everything is going in the right direction. She goes with the star linebacker on the high-school football team, get's a date and makes a dance squad all in the same weel. Best week ever for Indigo. But then her start linebacker dump's her and goes with another girl in the same day. after her relationship in down hill she has lost her popularity and self-esteem. But then she goes to marcus ,her next door neighbor. But the problem now is that Indigo realizes he is a good guy and now someone else likes him too.
In this book, the main character, Indigo, is upset that her best friend is leaving to move to New Jersey. A new neighbor moves in next door and it turns out to be Marcus Carter, a kid she used to go to school with in second grade. She does not like him at first because he was living in the house of her best friends, and she thought he was annoying. While they were at school, the most popular boy, Quincy Rawlins, takes an interest in Indigo, and they start to date. Marcus tries to warn her that he's not a good person, but she mistakes his genuine concern for jealousy. Marcus begins to like Indigo, but he starts to tutor a little boy and meets a girl named Sasha. He also grows feelings for Sasha as his relationship with Justin, the little kid he tutors, grows. When Indigo finds out that Marcus's step-mother kicked her best friend out of their house, she blames Marcus and starts to ignore him. During this time, Justin gets a stroke and dies, and this leaves Marcus sad and depressed. He tries to find comfort in Indigo, but she ignores him and he seeks it in Sasha instead. Towards the end of the book around the time of Christmas, Quincy turns out to be a player and this breaks Indigo's heart. She receives a gift from Marcus and she wants to go to his house to apologize for not listening to him and for blaming him for her best friend leaving when it was not his fault. He was not at his house and she had to wait for him to come back. When he did come back, she saw him and started to take an interest in him. She apologized for blaming him and started to flirt with him. By the end of the conversation, they were dating. Indigo is grateful that she found out the type of person Quincy was, and she was glad that she started to date Marcus. In my opinion, this is a great book for teen girls because it is interesting and others can relate to this novel.
Indigo summer is one of my favorite childhood books, its mainly about a girl named indigo summer going through different stages of her life. She goes through High school drama, her best friend moving away, and then boy drama with her ending up with an old childhood friend, Marcus. This book teaches young adults life lessons and how to deal with different problems that life throws at you thats one of the many reasons why i love this book. I highly recommend people to read this book, you all wont regret it.
I liked this novel. Coming of age, first love, life lessons. The language was definitely not what I'm used to but I liked it. The writing was alright too. Definitely, a love and basketball recreation. 🤗😄
I basically enjoyed this book. Indigo summer in my opinion is very confused at first, She had her head wrapped around popularity because she didn't understand that Quincy only wanted one thing from her. Marcus on the other hand is sorta- kinda-ish is for her. They can joke around and have fun so I guess Marcus is the one for Indigo. This book was sad because Justin, a little boy Marcus tutored had died from a stroke. It also hurt my feelings because when Marcus needed Indigo the most she had been acted selfish and she only began thinking about her best friend Jade- I don't blame her. This book was great and I loved it and anyone should read this book even though it's rated for young adults!!
I bought this book for one of my 8th grade students. By the middle of the school year, she still hadn't found a book she liked and would read consistently. This book changed that completely. It took her a few months but she finished the whole book and loved it! I highly recommend this book for students who love drama. I hope to have the whole set for my classroom library.
This book had me feeling so many different emotions because it explored so many things. From that dog Quincy trying to sleep with Indigo to Indigo finding out she was truly in love with Marcus this book is Amazinggg.
Indigo Summer In 15-year-old Indigo Summer's world, there are the physical changes that her body is going through now that her menstrual cycle has started, the changes of having to get used to her best friend moving since her parent's got divorced, the stress of starting a new school and hardly knowing anyone, and the pressure of having to compete to be on one of the best dance squads in Atlanta. Then there's the added pressure of being the girlfriend of one of the most popular boys on the football team Quincey Rowling's whose seen and rumored to be a player. With so many changes going on it's a good thing Indi has next door neighbor Marcus having her back. Along with her grandmother Nana whose always there to offer advice and because of that has brought Indi up to be a strong, young, lady who knows her worth.
MY THOUGHTS: This book was just too damn cute! It definitely had that AWWW factor! It was set in a time of teenage love, pressure, and heartache. In this initial book (INDIGO) as a character is STRONG! This girl has her own mind and she's fierce. She isn't persuaded by Quincey (and what is it about Quincey's?) to do something she isn't ready for. And not only that she's clever enough to get herself out of a situation that was about to get HOT! My heart kind of broke for her at the end but her grandmother (NANA) was on point when she says it happens to all of us females and it won't be the last. I almost expected her though to go into this tale about how after Sonny that's when she found Indi's grandfather and that blah blah blah in time the right person will come. So glad she didn't go there. It's too bad that they didn't have the progress in insulin then than they have now. Maybe Nana would have been able to have a few more of those cookies. It's so sad to say but even though I read this book before (and forgot a great deal of it) that I already had the feeling (JUSTIN)was going to die. Admittedly I don't know A LOT about sickle cell. But if you ever watched the TLC movie (Crazy Sexy Cool) episodes seem to be brought on from exerting yourself in a physical way AND Justin seemed to do a lot of that. A little *too* much on that bike. So at first it was just a smidge of a feeling. But then when it got to the part where they're in the field watching the airplanes, it just felt so final. I knew this was this little boys last moment and we would never hear from him again. I LOVED (MARCUS). Strongest character in the book. Outshining even the star of the series herself. Fell in love with everything about him page after page. I love his clean-cut style! I loved that he wore the right kind of shoes to the dance! I love that he worked and he had a good heart. Had Justin lived (though he claimed he was too young) I have no doubt he would have tried to be that little boy's father figure. Then finding Indi's doll just was the icing on the cake. Marcus is that fictional kind of boyfriend you read about and either think a) of that special one in high school back in the day that was "Marcus" or if you're like me and still single today in your adult years you think b) DAMN! Why can't I either have that today or get that back? The only thing I didn't like about Marcus was I thought it was stupid he brought his German Shepard to that little boys house. And for what? He wasn't taking Justin to the park. I'm not a dog lover and I never seem to get how people with dogs always think just because they say "Oh he won't hurt you" find that justifiable for you to want to be around their pet and just because they tell you that all your fears will magically be erased. In this book it was (conveniently). But Marcus could have scared that little boy to death. What if he took off running and had a stroke of heart attack. SMH. So again I ask what was the point of him bringing that dog on a tutoring job? And I'm happy that KIM and QUINCY got (low key) and (full on) dissed in the end of the book. Because I HATE when people break it off with you, hurt you, and turn around and hit you up and either act like it's all good or they wanna know how you are. Was I surprised that Patrice and Quincey ended? NO I WAS NOT! Guys get with these other women and when it blows up in their face they always think about the good one and want that one back when Its TOO LATE! Audios Quincey! Audios Kim! I liked that it touched on sexual pressure lightly, but didn't go to the degree it could have gone and had Quincey all out try to rape Indi either when they were alone in the car or in his bedroom. I thought it did just enough to show that he was a DOG. And was it just me or did Quincey come on to Indi a little fast? "Hey. Here's your class. You wanna be my date to the Homecoming game?" Indi and Marcus are *the* perfect couple and unconsciously I think they may have been the prequel for a couple I've created today. When I read this story after so many years I see where the idea might have come from. They act so similar.
The book I finished reading is Next Semester by Cecil R. Cross. This book was very good, I will definitely read it again. Cecil is an author who publishes books for young teens and adults to read. The main character in Next Semester, James Dawson, is not having any good luck as a freshman in college. In the first semester James was introduced to a girl named Katrina. Everybody thought they were the best couple on the campus, until the big secret was revealed. Having everybody talk about you behind your back was just too much pressure for James. He didn’t understand why Katrina waited so long to tell him the news. On top of that being on college probation made life even harder for him. James decided to enter a step frat for boys. But he didn’t know what was coming for him. All the decisions of doing the wrong thing was making him decide if he was go pass or fail freshman year of college. The point of the book is to not give in to peer pressure. James was doing everything he could just to stay on the step team. He couldn’t tell none of his friends about it. Also its trying to get people to understand that making the wrong decision are not going to get you any further then you already are. You have to try to move on from the past and plan for the future. This book had me in different emotions. The first feeling was being angry because, even though he knew what he was doing, he still chose to do the wrong thing. It was also sad because, the point of almost failing the first year of college and not having any friends was hard. Another reason on why it made me sad was because he was so upset about everybody talking about him everywhere he went and making fun on him. This was a very good book, I thought it was very interesting. Every time I finished one chapter I was ready to start the next. I would recommend this book to girl and boy teenagers. Especially to those who feel as if they have been bullied or has been pressured to do something. This book will help you understand that answering to peer pressure is not always the answer. Young girls and boys always fall into the category. Also I would recommend this book to girls who are mature enough to read it.
Indigo Summer By:Monica McKayhan Review by:Lashaunna Thomas
I've never read no book more instersting than Monica books. My author is connected to the story because she was a young 15 year old gurl who love to dance and didnt like boys. My author also love her family, Indigo love her family 2 espically her grandma. My book is about a girl name Indigo Summer who was happy that she is going to high school. When she found out that her friend jade moved after her family had a fight she got mad. When she went started high school she would always come home and tell her grandma"I dont like them ugly stupid boys in my class". Indingo also told her Grandma Nana that she will never get married and never have kids because there enough in her family. When she found out that she had new neighbor next door were her best friend Jade use to live. His name was Marcus. When Indingo found out that it was a boy name Marcus lived next door with a dog name killer she knew she wouldnt like him because he was a boy even though she dont like boy.Indingo went next door to indrouce herself when she look at him she told herself he look familar. She startred to ask" what type of dog name is killer and he said what type of name is Indingo. Indingo and marcus begin to have a converstation with him that when she got called in the house. The next day Indingo parents invited Marcus and his family over for dinner. Indingo didnt want him to cum ova but her grandma said that is not going to be a very nice things if they dont invite there neighbor over for dinner. When marcus and his family came over they begin to take about the neighborhood then they started to talk about how the family next door wasnt able to live him the house they stayed in. Indingo begin to get mad because marcus was talkin about jade her best friend. That when Indingo started to hate boys even more.
An excerpt from Indigo Summer ... "What is it you see in him?" "He's sweet. He's on the football team. He makes me laugh. He's popular ..." "He's a dog. he doesn't know how to treat a girl," he said." Your too good for him, Indi." "How come you don't like him, Marcus?" "Because I know what he is about." "And what's he about?" "He aint bout nothing!" Indigo Summer is a very interesting character. She goes through the same everyday troubles that African American teens go through. The sex talk, boyfriend/girlfriend problems, drama and other situations like those. Indigo has lived in College Park for almost all her life with her best friend until one day everything changes and now her next door neighbor is someone she hasn't seen for a very long time. She is surprised to find out who it is. Indigo has just entered high school and does not know how her school will be. All she is focused on it making the dance team. One day Quincy Rawlins, a star football player asks her to the Homecoming dance and then she says yes. Some days after asking her, he asks her to be his girlfriend. Too bad Indigo did not know what his intentions were and what she was getting herself into. Indigo's next door neighbor, Marcus Carter, has liked her for a very long time and now it's Indigo's decision to realize it or not. Marcus knows what is going on with Quincy and that he is up to no good but Indigo does not want to believe him. She yells and tells him that he is just jealous. Soon after Quincy has broken her heart and cheated on her with his supposedly play cousin, Indigo realizes that Marcus was just trying to look out for her and be a good friend. The whole time Marcus likes Indigo and does all that he can to try and show her that he does. In the end Indigo realizes that she likes Marcus as well and what happens next is for the readers to find out.
This book reminds me of other Kimani Tru books i have read in the series. It all involves teenage drama and what happens when teens face issues dealing with love, relationships, family and life. While reading this book i thought it going to be about a boy and a girl having problems within their relationship but there was more added to it. T he characters are Indigo and Marcus. They have been friends since the second grade and marcus actually likes indigo out she didnt have a clue. So her freshman year of highs chool, she met a boy named quincy and they have been going out for while. Now marcus knows how quincy is because he jumps from girl to girl and now indigo is involved. Basically there is a love triangle being brought up and all of a sudden quincy was with another girl and now the Indigo's heart is broken. Good thing she has marcus because he would have her back no matter what and in the end, they both go out. It was a nice ending but both had drama at the beginning and they somehow made it to a happy ending. I really enjoyed this book because i can learn from what other people do to solve their situations and how it can be solved. I liked the way the author linked this story to the outside world because this can happen to anyone. The genre of this book be teen fiction and again this book taught me alot and i wish that there were more to this book.I would like to know what would happen next...
Being fifteen years old and akwards seems like the hardest time in life, however, Indigo Summers life seems to be taking a turn for the best. She finally lands Qunicy, the star of the football team and lands a date for the homecoming dance, and makes the dance team! Indigo finally believes that her life is going in the right direction until Qunicy breaks up with her for not loosing her virginity to him. All at the drop of a dime Indigo's popularity is down the drain. While feeling down on her luck, she looks right under her nose to find Marcus, her next door neighbor who she never noticed in a romantic light until now. Marcus is everything she has every wanted, he is sweet, kind and beleives Indigo is the most beautiful woman. The only problem is, someone else has now notices how amazing Marcus is. This book is the true definition of what you want being right in front of your face.
This book is a great read for students in high school and is focused on the center of an african american girl.
The themes of this book speak about peer pressure, friendship, love, and identity.
Students can have discussion on peer pressure along with the book TTYL.
I enjoyed reading this book because i could senese the state of relatability while been a teenager and the pressures of sex and popularity S
This was an good book. I really liked this book that I couldnt put it down. This book reminds me of "Problem Solved" because they both are about the characters life, there teen life, Also the two charaters both have problems in high school thta they have to go through. And as for me reading this book it made me wonder about Indigo and Qunicy's realtionship, Like will he stay faithful to her? Is he good enough for her.And what really pushed me to read this book is to found out was Indigo ansd Marcus going to hook up. The main people of this book were of course Indigo and her friend Marcus and her boyfriend Qunicy and the author always brought up Indigo friends. But I really enjoyed this book and I love how the author set up this book making it seem like this book is really based on what teens good though in high school.
This series and the Bluford High series are the most popular series with 7th and 8th grade girls in my junior high library. I appreciate both series for their lack of profanity and their realistic writing that attracts the kids, but this series is far superior in the writing style. I have only read the first book in this series, but I've had to buy mulitiple copies of all the books- can't keep them on the shelves. Great series for teens, though I have several faculty members who read them as well!
In this story of growing up, falling in puppy love, and making decisions Indigo Summer finds herself doing the unexpected. Starting her first year in high school becomes fun and interesting when she makes the dance team and her boyfriend is a football player. She's meeting new people and growing up. When she starts to notice her new next door neighbor things change. When she decides she's not yet ready to have sex, her oh so popular boyfriend isn't willing to wait until she is ready so dumps her for someone who is. After this she finds herself going after her neighbor.
i wouldn't nessacarily say that i learned anything that i didnt already know from the book but i liked it and it kept my interested. i finished it in 2 days. thats a new record because i have never read a book that quick. though 1 time a read a judy moody book in one night but that was in 3rd grade. i have never read a more advanced book that quicky. i have already read trouble follow, but i am waiting to find the pact.
I think this book was a very good novel that ive read sense 8th grade of last year. I like reading books like this because they keep me involve in the real world and the way teens look at the world. I hope Monica McKayHan keep continieng too make books like these because i love reading a book that makes me wont too go on and on and on. Monica McKayHan is not only a great author but a excellent writer. Thank You !
A wholesome story about family, first love and heartache
A wholesome story that gives a glimpse of a young girl who comes from a regular family who raised a girl with standards and self-pride as well as a young man who has a strong father in his life that helps to shape the good head he has on his shoulders. This story lets young people know that labels and over-the-top, almost grown behavior isn't necessary. This is one for my school library.
This was a little bit slow in he drama. All I read was just the events happening in life like day by day. Also as far as her and quincy was concerned it seemed to me they didnt even like each other,Indigo was trying to be grown up with her first boyfriend. Oh yeah that reminds me, the author sort of paints her as a misguided child to me.
Ooooo....!!!! I really have no word to describe this book. It is absolutely amazing. It takes you on a journey where you can imagine yourself being with the characters and seeing how they live their everyday lives. This book did make me cry at one point but towards the end...it was all smiles. I just really love this book!
cute story...could use some better editing and the plot sort of zipped by...it went from fall and new budding romance to christmas and presents for boyfriend without too much relationship development...
i recommand this book to anyone. in my opinion it is so good. the author Monica McKayhan is smart and writes about common problems and solution.its about 2 people point of view on different situation.
This is also a good book. I read it awhile ago..dont know the exact date. As of right now im reading Jaded by the above author. If you are a fan of young adult/teen fiction books, you will enjoy this books and many more books by this author.
I'm on page 64 and indigo has just Ben kissed by quicy and she made the first cuts for the dance team. So far everything in her life has been going great excluding that her best friend jade is not there.
I read these when I was 10-13 and perhaps a bit young (I was rather mature, though). Allthe Kimani Tru books I have read have been absolutely astounding. The lessons and situations were so essential for my development. Especially for Black Girls. My children will read these.
