Lewis' Will tells the story of the last will and testament of Lewis Yancey Christmas, a wealthy plantation owner in antebellum North Carolina who died in 1859. Lewis never married, but had 13 children with two slave mistresses. In his will, he excluded his legal heirs, but provided freedom and financial inheritances to 10 slave relatives, while leaving other slave children in bondage. Lewis' Will recounts the challenge to the will, the betrayal of Lewis by his executor and the struggle of his slave beneficiaries to fulfill Lewis' final wish for them.
