1.5 stars rounded up because of the dog motif.
This is primarily an appliqué book although there are a few embroidery stitches used. There is a technique used for some of the designs other than the norm of basically making a patch of a design and attaching it. It is appliquéing each piece of the design, like each stripe on a teapot separately. There is also a project where each piece is set apart leaving a gap a little like stained glass is separated by a line.
The motifs are ho hum to me except the dog which is fine although not fabulous. I'm really easy to please with dogs though. The designs with the exception of the cowboy are ultra basic and even he isn't particularly complex and not at all original.
What's really odd, though, is that there are fewer designs than projects which I hadn't seen before and find bizarre. Even less than that really as they are used in conjunction in the projects. So basically you have a cowboy setting, a race cars, sailboats on water, a few trees with a fence, a dog and a couple of toys and bowl, flowers (which count as four motifs in the book) strawberries , a house, and very generic and uniform stars, circles, and those generic kitchen designs of a rooster, fruit and teapot. There is one block letter alphabet.
That's it. Seriously, a field of identical except in size circles counts as one of the 16 motifs. Ridiculous. Even the projects are too basic to go into in detail: embellishments on clothing, blankets, pillows, etc., everything store bought.
The instructions for each project are text only and the general instructions are so so.
Give this one a miss.

A lovely little book full of things to make and do. Some of the items in this book and gorgeous and use Kidston's iconic designs. Perhaps my only issue with it is that they are all appliqué and there are no patterns for the actual items themselves. Thus, in many ways, the book is simply a selection of design ideas as opposed to patterns and things to make. Also, some of the templates are rather fiddly to enlarge - enlarging in itself is not a problem but when she suggests enlarging by 263.5% or something equally exact, it becomes too much of a pain in the backside! All that said, there are some lovely templates in there and some great design ideas that I will indeed use for myself. The breakfast table cloth is absolutely gorgeous and some of the gift ideas are great.

When I saw this on the library shelf I was excited because I love Kidston's style so much, but this book of projects is disappointing. Too many of the projects are "just so simple -- do this do that [and then a miracle occurred] and you end up with this adorable" . . . whatever.
It's true -- the skills required are pretty basic, but to execute them as well as they are done in this book you need more instruction that she gives. And frankly, the projects are not all that interesting. Many better craft books out there. Pick one of them.

OK, this is one of those books that was only printed because of the name of the author. This was BAD. I am not a crafty chica, not even a little bit - and I had already heard of all these projects and knew how to do them. So the projects were easy and unoriginal, there might still be design inspiration - nope. I thought this was a waste of the paper it was printed on.

This is a good, basic guide to crafting. The instructions are clear and the pictures are beautiful. I liked the use of felt. I'm not sure it has enough substance for a more experienced crafter but it's a great place to start.

These projects are not good for beginners and the measly stuff you apparently get 'free' with this $40-$50 book to make something is a joke. Just a bit of thread and a plain bag. Cheaper to get your own thread and different craft book, will save you in the long run
