This one reads as much of a history of bike racing in the US as a biography of John Howard's career. It is pretty amazing to read about the racing back then and the amount of breakaway success. It seemed like Howard was on another level from most riders and I think he may have had a much harder time on today's racing scene.

I was also amazed by Howards lack of injuries sustained from crashing, over training, etc. Howard's true skill seems to be his ability to train like a madman without injury on equipment that is nothing compared to modern technology.

I also enjoyed the Ironman, race across America, and beginning of mountain biking. They all seemed to just start with a couple guys just getting out trying to push the limits of sport!
