While there was some good information in this book the title was somewhat misleading. Less of a focus on winter camping and more on winter wilderness multi-day trips. Written in 1991 a lot of the gear and some of the techniques are outdated, though the basics remain the same. I would have liked to see more diagrams for skill descriptions instead of aesthetic photographs.
Got me motivated to get out in the backcountry more, but this wasn't the problem in the first place! Author tries very hard to make his writing straightforward and readable, but there's a lot missing here. It's a great place to start, and it's written in a way that doesn't overwhelm you and cripple your confidence, but as a supplement to beginner/early intermediate knowledge, it's lacking. In addition, some of the information is quite dated, but those can be read as interesting period pieces. His appendix of books in the back lead me to some good ones, so this wasn't the worst read.
On the whole, I was a bit disappointed with this book. There was some valuable information, but I felt the focus was too heavy on skiing and snowshoeing. Not enough time was spent on setting up camp in winter and ensuring gear didn't freeze during night and day. Granted, the book was published in 1991; it is to be expected that some information will be dated.
