From the gateway towns to deep inside each park, "Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks" profiles twenty-six drives with detailed maps, photographs, and endless suggestions on where to hike, fish, camp, find a room, and view wildlife in this premier natural area.
On Friday, September 26, 2009, I found this book at the museum store of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Indeed, I first found the initial edition of this book, and was considering purchasing it, when I found this Second (and more recent) Edition. Today we completed the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks portion of our vacation, and I feel that our enjoyment of the Parks was greatly enhanced by this book.
After an introductory section giving overall useful information about the Parks, the author concentrates on Yellowstone National Park. There are five Entrances to the park, several routes by which one may get to one of these entrances, and several roads within the park itself; and the author covers these routes and roads in 20 separate chapters. For each road / route, she not only advises of points of interest, but also gives historical and general information.
The author then turns her attention to Grand Teton National Park, and in eight chapters covers the routes and roads to and in the Park.
I used this book as our Bible while we went through the Parks, all the way from Cody, Wyoming to Garden City, Utah. My one quibble with the book is that if one is taking a route in reverse order, one must read the chapter for that route backwards; but it would obviously have made the book twice as thick to give information for each route / road in one direction and then in the other direction. Otherwise, I think this book was the best purchase I made on our vacation.
I read (skimmed?) this in preparation for my trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I decided that it had enough useful information that I went ahead and bought a hard copy. I liked how it had divided the park up into different short sections so that you could chose whatever path through the park that you wanted (and even approaches to the park).
Great book...even describes in detail the most scenic approaches to the parks and surrounding towns (think 60+ miles out surrounding). Lists out the campgrounds, best photo opportunities, what wildlife you can see where and even has some funny parts to it.
We used this book as a guide while exploring Yellowstone and it was a fantastic resource. In addition to a nice overview of the different areas you drive through in the park, the book lists many stops that don't have signage and would otherwise have been easily missed.
