It Ain't Just the Size by M.G. Hardie. 2010. Dream 4 More Rating: Sweet Dreams. 4 stars.

It Ain’t Just the Size kept my attention from start to finish with the combination of characters, personal issues and views on current events.

Lance has his hands full by being a positive example of a man that happens to be black and even through trials and tribulations. His journey takes you on a trip from undergoing a difficult parenting situation, a criminal background, and his education, his love for people, his friends, and the need for a soul mate.

This book has a host of characters that are so realistic that you can find yourself becoming a part of the family. There were so many areas covered in the story that is impossible to lose interest and some of the topics reach the reader in ways that seem so close to home and makes you feel like you’re a part of the cipher.

Although there is so many things introduced in this story, but the book avoids being confusing or overbearing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a combination of drama, education, and love.

Format: Kindle Edition
A unique addition to the urban novel genre is It Ain't Just The Size, by M.G. Hardie (Aventine Press, 2010). I'm sad to see the paperback is out of print, but at least you can buy a used copy, or get it on Kindle. You'll want to, because Hardie gives readers something different than a repackaged cocaine mafia, gangbanging, get-rich-or-die-trying type of urban fairy tale. Hardie gives us unforgettable characters spouting snappy lines, lifelike people you want to root for, laugh with, be proud of... or sometimes, wring their necks!

The story is set in Long Beach, California. The characters' lives are enmeshed in pop culture: rising college tuition, lesbian relationships, marijuana addiction, video games, confused friends, strong women, underemployed men, and a hero who is trying to buck the odds. They talk about child support, racism, the justice system, the black community, and the n-word. This would make a cool indie film or maybe something Ice Cube and Chris Brown could star in.

It Ain’t Just the Size

MG Hardie with “It Ain’t Just the Size” has set the stage (no pun intended) for a series of discussions. Through main character Lance and his friends he undertakes a host of topics, some controversial. Reading “It Ain’t Just the Size” takes concentration on the reader’s part. The book is written as a play, a format that I did not particularly care for and would prefer not to read again. While readers may not care for his choice of style, you cannot deny his talent.

“It Ain’t Just the Size” would be an interesting book club selection. The wealth of topics would provoke lively discussions. If you can overlook the fact that it’s a play and just enjoy the story, you’ll come away feeling satisfied.

"It Ain't Just The Size" taps into issues that are currently going on that are being over looked or not addressed in today's society. The use of multiple characters gives more than one persons view on the issues which allows for a great debate. The screen play formating the author uses makes it for an easy read. You get a visual of each character and the location of where the story is based with every day that passes. I recommend this book to book clubs, it makes for great a discussions!! Thank you Mr. Hardie for a great read.
