Family care lawyer Lilly Valentine's life is demanding enough. But when she is begged for help by Anwar Khan after his teenage sister commits suicide, she finds herself dragged into a community terrified by a self-styled vigilante group vowing to protect it's women - by any means necessary... Treated with extreme hostility by the girl's family, Lilly is about to jettison the case. But when the police turn up and arrest the dead girl's younger brother for her murder, she's knows she's already in too deep. Together with her new assistant Taslima, Lilly gets caught up in the sinister world of a self-styled vigilante group vowing to protect the 'honour' of the women in their community - and punishing those who 'stray.' When another young Muslim girl disappears, Lilly knows it's only a matter of time before the group take the law into their own hands. But with so much in her own life at stake, has Lilly finally taken on more than she can handle?

Good plot line, but a lot of the dialogue, specifically from Sam’s character is badly written. Some very cringe and unoriginal lines. The book is easy to read and very pacy, I feel like some of the characters weren’t fully fleshed out though

Having never read any books by Helen Black I had no expectations. Having said that there is so much competition out there that I didn't expect it to be the best of the bunch.

The story itself is a really good one and tackles the difficult world of Muslim family values. Lilly Valentine is a good leading character and she is fiercely independant and although reading the prior books aren't necessary I would have personally liked to get a bit of background on her before reading this book.
Her partner Jack is a policeman who isn't that keen on Lilly taking on such a difficult case when heavily pregnant. Shortly into the story Jack himself is dragged into the case and his and Lilly's worlds collide as their cases overlap.

It was a pretty pacey book but infortunately I had a pretty good idea of who was behind it from around the halfway mark. Although I had an idea it didn't ruin the book for me and I though the story was told very well. This book was certainly interesting but wasn't a stand out from the crowd type of book. I will certainly continue to read Helen Black books and hope that we see more of Lilly and Jack in the future.
The young lad that is accused of his sisters murder was intriguing, but I founf it quite irritating that he was so consistantly hostile the whole way through the book.

The othere character we meet was Taslima who is a young girl looking for a job which she happens to find in the form of Lilly. Taslima was interesting and added a new dimension to the story as she has her own secrets that she is trying to hide. I would certainly love to read more about her in the future.
Overall it was a good read, but maybe not quite as good as some more recent books I have read. Definately reccommended although not quite the best of the best!

Bit surprised that so many people have rated this as a 4 or 5. It's a decent enough story, with a good late twist to it, but the characterisation is on the thin side and at a number of points the unexpected twists aren't sufficiently grounded in believable characters. I'm also not convinced that a lawyer or a police officer who bend the rules as much as happens in this story would be allowed to continue, however successful the final outcome might be.

It's good to read a crime novel set in a multicultural part of the UK - makes the characters seem more real, somehow. I understand this book is the start of a series featuring solicitor Lilly Valentine and I look forward to reading more.
