Eirene (Greek), pronounced I-ray-nay, peace, prosperity, quietness, rest, or to be set at one with yourself again. Maybe we have reason to despair when a historian has pointed out that about 85 percent of all human history concerns itself with war and conflict - personal, national, or worldwide. But into this cynical, weary, war-torn, strife-filled world there is a positive message in regards to peace and the author of "For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isa. 9:6)! Peace has come even into the midst of war. But the fruit of the spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.... - Galations 5:22 23 In these Bible studies from best-selling author Robert Strand, you will learn about yourself and how to relate to others as you gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be in Christ.
This was a sweet little book of devotionals that was given to me by a friend for Christmas. Included are, of course, Scripture references, as well as some thought-provoking questions with space to write responses, if readers so choose. This book didn't take long to read through, and served to focus my attention briefly on true peace and remind me how it can be obtained. Hey, who DOESN'T need a little advice on how to maintain a sense of peace in the world in which we live?
Much like the other books of this collection, this book is more of a “companion” study guide for a book that I wish the author would have written. The stories are not directly related to the theme, although they are inspirational and applicable, to a minor extent. The written material could be contained in about 10-20% of the entire book.
A friend of mine (who's also my copy-editor) gave me this book as a Christmas gift. I finally sat down and read it. She really knew the state of my heart and I'm sure she felt this was a perfect gift for me. This book address the spirit of peace (which is one of the nine fruits of the spirit recorded in Galatians 5:22-23). I'm glad she gave me this because it was very timely because I live life so much in a state of anxiety, it was a wake-up to get back into the word of God - for He is my peace. John 14:27 says peace He leaves with us; peace He gives us. Let not our heart be troubled. Very comforting especially for the times we live in. Great read and study (in other words, have a Bible handy for this study).
Peace is compromised when we compare ourselves to others and judge. We need to see ourselves as equal, not separate. We can bring ourselves and others up, not down. We can remind ourselves and others how God loves us. True peace isn't dependent on circumstances. It's settling into acceptance. We don't have to let things go, but let things be. If you're confident, you can be gentle, you don't have to push back. You don't have to be anxious and have doubts. You can use Christ's confidence, not your own.
