The Last Van Gogh

Rate this book
A love story that explores the bonds between patient and doctor, painter and muse. Summer, 1890. Van Gogh arrives at Auvers-sur-Oise, a bucolic French village that lures city artists to the country. It is here that twenty-year-old Marguerite Gachet has grown up, attending to her father and brother ever since her mother's death. And it is here that Vincent Van Gogh will spend his last summer, under the care of Doctor Gachet-homeopathic doctor, dilettante painter, and collector. In these last days of his life, Van Gogh will create over 70 paintings, two of them portraits of Marguerite Gachet. But little does he know that, while capturing Marguerite and her garden on canvas, he will also capture her heart. Both a love story and historical novel, The Last Van Gogh recreates the final months of Vincent's life-and the tragic relationship between a young girl brimming with hope and an artist teetering on despair.

Scan the blurb-reviews on the back of The Last Van Gogh and you'll find one word appear most prominent: "Evocative." It's a fitting descriptor for a story about the famous painter's last days, when he reached a level of output to be envied by any artist. And Alyson Richman doesn't disappoint in describing these works: the vivid colors, the materials used, and the processes involved. She urges the reader to get inside the mind of a genius and envision art they've never seen.

And while I enjoyed these descriptions, they forced a me to admit how bland my visual imagination is. For when I finished reading The Last Van Gogh, I googled some of the works described to compare with my mind's-eye view. I found that not only do my mental images tend to be hazy, but are usually pictures of things I have witnessed previously, unaltered by the details of textual rendition. So when I read about Van Gogh's work on a late-night painting of a church, I envisioned Starry Night.

But despite this cold-water revelation I enjoyed The Last Van Gogh. The story proves straightforward and psychologically poignant. And the heroine, Van Gogh's last love-interest, shows considerable openness and empathy, a breath of fresh air when many modern stories make mystery the order of the day.

The Last Van Gogh is a work of fiction, but it's well-researched. And other than the love story, which is pure speculation, the events and characterizations are plausible. There's even a section at the end detailing Alyson's research-process and features the biggest twist in the story when she meets a small-town gossip with a link to the past.

So while I still can't identify cadmium yellow or vermilion, I can always enjoy a colorful story. And this book inspired me to look up Van Gogh's paintings, which alone was worth the read.

NO SPOILERS!!!

This book is NOT about Van Gogh. It is instead about the last 70 days of Van Gogh's life spent in the bucolic French village Auvers-sur-Oise under the care of Dr. Gachet, specializing in homeopathic medicine. It is about the Gachet family, the doctor and his two children, shy Marguerite and her younger brother Paul. Marguerite Gachet was painted twice by Van Gogh while living in the village. There is correspndence between Vincent and his sister Wilhemina stating that there existed a third painting of her seated at a an organ. Scholars believe this painting was never finished. The book is about what may have led up to this last painting by Van Gogh, about his muse Marguerite and all those in the Gachet household. There are another two people in the household. They were kept hidden from the world. You will learn who these two were! The book is about this strange Gachet "household" much more so than about Van Gogh!

There is a clear epilogue that explains why the author wrote this book and on what facts she had at her disposal. This epilogue was fascinating and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was captivated by the true story and curious about that which we don't know for sure.

However reading the story imagined by the author was a chore. It was downright terrible. The love story was pure romantic drivel. The plot the author had envisioned is very possible, given the known facts, but its execution was poor. The character were flat. The events were childishly presented, totally without nuance. This story could have been marvellous! Tthe story about this household/family, all FIVE members, is certainly intriguing.

This author does have the ability to paint with words a person. They are colorfully drawn, not only their outward appearnace but also their personality. This ability to vividly describe a person is of importance in a book about an artist. This ability and the epilogue are the only two things I enjoyed about this book, otherwise I would have given it only one star. I am being kind in giving the book two stars, The number of minutes spent enjoying the prose was minimal. Furthermore it should be made clear to all prospective readers what the book will be about. It is not about Van Gogh, It is instead about a very intriguing family that played a pivotal role in the last 70 days of Van Gogh's life.

Swedish Tango: A Novel, also written by this author, was much better. Every time I try another book by an author who pleased me, I am disappointed. Dare I try another? The Lost Wife and The Mask Carver's Son both look so interesting......

The last 70 days of Vincent van Gogh's life were spent in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise while he was under the care of Dr Gachet, a homeopathic physician and amateur painter. Dr Gachet's potions do not help Vincent's mental illness, and may actually aggravate the condition. His 21-year-old shy daughter, Marguerite Gachet, has lived a very sheltered life cooking, cleaning, gardening, and managing the household. When Vincent visits the Gachets, he sees Marguerite light up when she plays the piano or tends her beautiful garden, and he asks to paint her portrait. The author speculates that Marguerite develops feelings for Vincent and sneaks out of the house to meet him.

The Gauchet household is very repressive, and no opportunities are available for Marguerite to meet young men. Her widowed father lives there with his son, his mistress, the daughter of his mistress, and Marguerite. Dr Gachet is self-centered and very happy to keep Marguerite at home as his unpaid servant. It is known that van Gogh actually painted portraits of Marguerite, and the author has imagined a clandestine love affair.

Marguerite narrates the story in the voice of an innocent, inexperienced girl, full of excitement of a first love. The book centers on the Gachet family, which is a fascinating story in itself. It does also give us an idea of van Gogh's work during the last two months of his life. If someone wants to learn more about Vincent van Gogh's whole life, they might want to pick up an additional book about this talented, but tortured, artist.

I really enjoyed reading this very good story. It is historical fiction based on something that really happened, of course. A story about the last days of Vincent Van Gogh. It's a story about a doctor and his family who live in a small village and Van Gogh goes there to be treated by the doctor for depression. This doctor works with herbal treatments which he also treats his own problems with as well as many other artists and they pay him with their work. The doctor has a beautiful daughter who Van Gogh, of course, falls for but the doctor forbids them from seeing each other although he has done several paintings of her. The depression takes over and he kills himself. He does have many other personal problems that lead to this. I loved this main character and how hard she tried to have a normal life with her eccentric father and brother. Also another plus for me, the chapters are short which I love. Makes the story go quicker, it seems to me! So again I thought this was a beautiful story.

Hola lectores 🥰
Hoy les dejo reseña de "EL ÚLTIMO VAN GOGH" DE ALYSON RICHMAN (2024)

🩵SINOPSIS:

Me gustó mucho.

Chose to read this book because it was written by Alyson Richman, who also wrote 'The Lost Wife', an amazing book about a couple separated by WWII. Although this was a quick, easy read, it didn't come close to 'The Lost Wife'. Still, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others who want an interesting summer read.

The book tells the story of Marguerite Gachet, who lives with her father, her brother, her 'governess' (aka her dad's mistress) and the 'governess's' daughter in Auvres, a rural French town. Marguerite does not live a 'normal' life. She spends most of her time cooking and cleaning for the family in the long, dark house, and gets little time to go out into town and socialize with others. Her father is eccentric to say the least with his tinctures of medicinal herbs, his strange way of dressing, and his love of painters. He makes his living treating depressed painters as their 'doctor'.

Marguerite's brother tries to act just like their father, and the 'governess' and her daughter are mostly kept hidden away in the house. Even stranger is the fact that although Marguerite and Louise-Josephine (the 'governess's' daughter) are the same age, they barely even acknowledge each other. Marguerite is facing facts that although she's now 21, she'll probably be stuck in the house in Auvres for the rest of her life.

But everything changes when Vincent Van Gogh comes to town. He's come from Paris as a patient of Marguerite's father (Monsieur Gachet). And Vincent sees something special in Marguerite. They have a very quiet affair, which is probably typical of the time, but seems so tame by today's standards. And Vincent paints three portraits of Margeurite, one which is kept hidden in a cave. This 'affair' with Vincent makes Marguerite open up to Louise-Josephine, and they finally become friends.

As I mentioned, this book did not have a lot of action, which is probably typical of the time of the circumstance. Everyone had to be so careful and so polite to retain their beaugois appearances. The book would have been a lot more interesting if everyone just let loose and lived a little. Basically, Vincent was restrained and polite, the 'governess' and her daughter were kept hidden, and Paul and Monsieur Gachet were completely eccentric and really couldn't have cared less about anyone but themselves.

For as long as she can remember, Marguerite has lived in the shadow of her deceased mother. Attached to her vulnerability and quiet spirit, her father treats her as a slave than his precious daughter. Although Marguerite has claimed to be a victim, she is often disrespected and reprimanded for wanting to be independent. Knowing that her life is all planned out by her father has left her feeling bitter and perplexed. The only thing that keeps her at ease is her Father's friend, Monsieur who she considers a beloved sister. Little does she know about the background Monsieur shares with her family, tracing back centuries ago. In addition, Marguerite lives with her older brother Paul who makes a living making her life unbearable.

By the summer of 1890, Vincent van Gogh could be the cure to Marguerite pain. As a painter, he brings pleasure to Marguerite household, painting beautiful portraits. However he develops a platonic relationship with Marguerite that turns romantic. Vincent knows that he is taking a huge risk falling for Marguerite but he cannot help but be smitten by her beauty. Secretly they meet together to dive in passion but never crossing the line. Soon Marguerite secrets are exposed and Vincent is left alone fighting for the woman that he desperately needs. Things take a turn for the worst when Paul grows jealousy of Marguerite independence, vowing to destroy everything that Marguerite holds dear. Yet Monsieur does not betray Marguerite trust but not even her help can save her from the wrath that is to come when her world comes tumbling down.

This was a beautiful, painful and well written novel. I have two other books by Richman, but this by far is the most emotional one. The characters are so authentic, I felt that I was a minor character in the book going through the turmoil they were going through. Marguerite's father I deeply connected with, even though he behaved unreasonable at times. To my surprise this book actually was slow in the beginning but it quickly turned satisfactory to extraordinary.

Alyson Richman is an amazing writer, looking forward to reading more books by her!

I love Allyson Richman's stories. She can take a historical figure, one that you may not even have any interest in, and write a historical fiction story that spellbinds you! Her characters in this book were so rich and I finished reading in two days driving on the road. She did extensive research on the background of Vincent Van Gogh and the doctor that he went to for his depression. She even visited the house that the doctor lived and where Van Gogh did his paintings. It's a love story that Richman wove into the life of Van Gogh. I also read The Rhythm of Memory about the Pinochet era and The Lost Wife and loved both of those. I will red anything Allyson Richman writes!

This is a fiction based on a true story, which makes it quite interesting. Marguerite Gachet is the daughter of the homeopathic doctor that treated Vincent Van Gogh in the last 70 days of his life. The author had, from historical information and interviews, weaved together a believable story of the relationship between Marguerite and Vincent. While everyone knows how Vincent Van Gogh's story ends, this story about Marguerite is quite sad. It's a fast read, and the characters aren't that well developed - though you do get some insight into the controlling, oppressive father and rather petty, jealous brother. But I did enjoy reading the book, so that's why I gave this 3 stars.

Surprised

Considering how much I love other books by Alison Richman this book, her first pales in comparison. Detailing Van Gogh's seventy days living in Auvers and then killing himself, something was missing. I didn't find any of the characters likable least of all Dr. Gadget who treated Van Gogh at the end of his life. I was also seriously bored and overall found this reading experience disappointing.
