Before Max and Ruby were preschoolers, they were Baby Max and Ruby. The popular bunny siblings are back in two more board books?as their baby selves. In Sandbox , Max and Ruby mix delectable treats out of bubbles, berries, birdseed, and sand. In Birthday , Max gets lots of wonderful birthday presents?but none quite so nice as Grandma?s! With eye-catching novelty elements, these irresistible board books will introduce the very youngest readers to the beloved bunny pair, who star in their own show on Nick Jr. and Noggin.

Rosemary Wells is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She often uses animal characters to address real human issues. Some of her most well-known characters are Max & Ruby and Timothy from Timothy Goes To School (both were later adapted into Canadian-animated preschool television series, the former’s airing on Nickelodeon (part of the Nick Jr. block) and the latter’s as part of PBS Kids on PBS).
The illustrations are Rosemary Wells’s artwork collaged with photographs and include a raised sensory element.
This book features Max’s and Ruby’s elusive parents.
It is never directly stated that it is Max's birthday. If the repetitive phrase had said, "What's in [name]'s present [to Max]" instead of "What's in [name]'s present" that would have made things clearer since Max is not shown opening any of the presents. Also, there is a present from Ruby's friend Louise, but Louise is not present or pictured, which is odd.
Not as cute as some of the baby Max and Ruby books. It is a good book to share with a baby or young toddler who doesn't really know about birthdays yet.
