What a great read-aloud for toddlers! There are big, bright pictures, with only a few lines of text per page, rhymes, and repetition of "Hunky Dory ate it". I liked waiting for the kids to fill in the outraged "hunky dory ate it", and had them act out other parts of the story like slurping spaghetti and wagging their tails, and saying yuck for the medicine. The overall story is just about a mischievous dog who eats everything in sight and has to go to vet.

Hunky Dory is one of those dogs who will eat anything, and he does. "Sandy Drake grilled a steak, Hunky Dory ate it." "Julie Fry made a pie, Hunky Dory ate it." You get the picture. After cake, spaghetti, steak and sand pie, Hunky Dory gets a trip to the vet, where he has to eat something he DOESN'T want to - medicine. Kids will love Hunky Dory, especially if they have a dog at home.

Each time someone cooks food, the dog Hunky Dory eats the food. All the eating made him sick, and he had to go to the vet. Hunky Dory then had to eat medicine, and hate it. Cute story with funny pictures.

Simple text, rhyming and repetition make this a fun book to read to young children. They will be joyously shouting along before the end of the book arrives.

The plot dragged and my mother would not have approved of the ending. She didn't allow us to use the word "hate." Hee!

Cute dog who will eat everything. Even the stuff you really shouldn't.
Has a rhythm to it, almost sounds like music.
Simple text.
Would I use it for storytime?
For preschoolers yes.

We still talk about this book around our house even though our kids are 19 and 21! This could possibly be because we have our own 1 year old Hunky Dory.
