Cindy Dees started flying airplanes while sitting in her dad’s lap at the age of three and got a pilot’s license before she got a driver’s license. At age fifteen, she dropped out of high school and left the horse farm in Michigan where she grew up to attend the University of Michigan.

After earning a degree in Russian and East European studies, she joined the U.S. Air Force and became the youngest female pilot in the history of the Air Force. She flew supersonic jets, VIP airlift and the “C-5” Galaxy, the world’s largest airplane. She also worked part-time gathering intelligence. During her military career, she traveled to forty countries on five continents, was detained by the KGB and East German secret police, she got shot at, flew in the first Gulf War, met her husband and amassed a lifetime’s worth of war stories.

Her hobbies include professional Middle Eastern dancing, Japanese gardening and medieval reenacting. She started writing on a one-dollar bet with her mother and was thrilled to win that bet with the publication of her first book in 2001.

Mission Status Update
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION: FOR AUTHORIZED EYES ONLY

7 January 2011

Operator has completed mission of reading "The Medusa Prophecy" and is now completing written analysis.

Findings:

*This was a great book. I loved the premise. I ate this group of female Special Forces soldiers up. I loved their camaraderie, their team spirit, and how they worked hard how to show the boys how it's done. Although I am no soldier myself, I think women soldiers can kick some serious butt and I'm cheering them on.
*Karen was a good heroine. At times, she was a bit frustrating, but I have to give her props that she managed so well, under the effects of a very devastating, lethal drug. I loved how kickbutt she was. She had a complex about being a large woman who was strong, and had been treated as a She-male, butch, and all those nasty terms that piss me off. She was a big, well-muscled, strong, sexy heroine worthy of being called an Amazon. The Sami people thought she was the reincarnation of the Norse war goddess Freya, which is a pretty darn awesome compliment.
*On the hottie hero front, Anders Larson checks out with all cylinders flying. What a man! Sexy as heck. An Olympic athlete skier, a bad@$$ warrior, sweet, loving, and man enough to appreciate a strong woman. He loved Karen for what she was, and thought she was sexy as hell. Let me make this clear that this is not a romance. It is an action-adventure story with a good romance. As an action-adventure junkie, that's alright with me, and Anders is hot enough to keep me warm in below zero weather! There is no sex, but the chemistry between Anders and Karen in this story from when they first meet and there on, and when they fought to see if Anders was man enough to date her was seriously hot! I imagine they will definitely burn up the sheets when they get together.
*Action level was very good. Of course, I could have used more, but the extreme cold weather setting and seeing these soldiers work their magic made up for it.
*Interesting look at the native tribe of Northern Norway, the Samis. They are commonly known as Laplanders and they are nomadic, existing off their hunting and raising of herds of reindeer. I would like to learn more about them.
*The plot about the dangerous designer drugs was interesting. I'm ambivalent about the terrorist angle. Hasn't there been enough finger-pointing at this particular type of culprit?
*I am definitely going to read the rest of this series. The Medusa team is freaking awesome. I'm excited to read the other women's stories.

Final Recommendations: Cindy Dees knows how to write action that is believable and guaranteed to make an action/adventure fan happy. Even though this is not romance, she had a great romance going here, which I don't doubt will be a lasting one for Karen and Anders. Although I don't have a military background, I found the military aspects to be realistic. I don't have any complaints. This series is the way to go for a reader who wants to read about women who are getting the job done, earning their title as women warriors and kickbutt heroines, with some hot guys thrown in for good measure. Overall rating: 4.25/5.0 stars.

Marine Karen Tucker and her all-female special forces team, the Medusas, are supposed to be doing survival training with their Norwegian counterparts, until they find a heavily guarded cabin being used as a drug lab, putting them (and their Norwegian liaison, Anders Larsen) in the middle of an extremely dangerous situation.

I really love this book. The Medusas are in top form, and Karen is one of my favorite characters. She's always been physically strong, but as she learns to trust her mental strength and strength of will, she's extraordinary. Anders is the perfect foil for her, and the drug lab mystery is one of the most compelling of the series. This is a book that I've read and re-read because it's just that good.

SO BAD (still better than Dan Brown).

I know I shouldn't have expected anything else from this genre, and I have only myself to blame for actually reading it. But still. Here is a list of what irked me about the book:
1. It pretends that it's trying to counteract stereotypes about femininity. It does not. Okay, maybe it doesn't pretend too hard, and I can kind of respect it for the sake that it's an unabashed Romance Novel written by a woman who was actually in a similar scenario (involved in the Air Force or something...) so she knows what kind of stereotypes she's actually working against. That being said, she's promoting what's wrong with the perception of women. Mary Wollstonecraft should come back as a brain-eating zombie and eat this woman's brain, because she's probably not using it too much anyway.
2. The writing is...Dan Brown-esque. (But at least it doesn't pretend to be amazing literature.)
3. The native people are portrayed in a very offensive manner. Ethnocentrism much? (Seriously, do people still believe in social darwinism or something? Why is it okay to treat whole groups of people like "savages"?)
4. The bad guys are generic Middle Easterners. For no apparent reason. They don't even get to belong to specific countries. They're just dark and hairy terrorists who speak Arabic and are inexplicably nefarious.
5. I read this. All of it. And I can never get back the time that I wasted being annoyed (and enthralled by the sheer depths of wrong-ness in this type of "literature").

All that being said, it was kind of hilarious.

The fourth in the Medusa Series.

This book is about Python or Karen. The Medusas are matched with the Norwegians up in the snowy area around Oslo. The Norsmen are skeptical of the women until they capture the men. Karen is the only one that actually pins her man and is attracted to him as he is to her.

The two groups are then to find the rest of the group but not until they come across a cabin in the middle of nowhere--resembles a drug lab. And with around 40 kilos of white powder that Karen ingests some.

Around Oslo and surrounding areas, young people are becoming psychotic and killing people. No one knows what they are taking but it's some kind of drug. Karen begins to feel the effects but doesn't know what's happening. All she wants to do is "kill."

Will the Medusas find out what's wrong with Karen? Will they find out what that building is?

I enjoyed Karen & Anders story, I was pleasantly surprise it was PG as far as relationships between them. No intimacy. They both found each other attractive to each other but no sex scenes. Can’t wait to read the next book.

Medusa's A great name for a reason

If you like military stories then trust me you will love The Medusa Phophecy. All I can say is that Cindy Dees knows how to bring her characters to life and you feel like you are right there while reading her story.

The first book in the Medusa Project proves to be a great start for the series. I think that the plot of the novel was extremely well thought out and all the characters had time to develop and to come in in scenes as the novel progresses.

Our main character here is Karen Turner and she is part of an elite group of special forces soldiers who are women, wow! They have come to the Artic Circle to take part in survival training and to prove to the Norwegians that they are on the same par as these men and should be taken just as seriously. The camaraderie between the women is obvious and none of the team is ever left out. I also loved that the author mixed culture like the Sami people with the plot. The chemistry between Larson and Karen is obvious form the start and I loved how it went form there.Solid plot about bad guys making a drug to endanger the world and the Medusas are caught in it!

I tried hard to like this, and the cover and setting are gorgeous, but I had two main problems.

The Sami people are described very stereotypically and negatively, as a book written 60 years ago might describe "native savages". I found it racist.

Personal quibble: I am bilingual and aware that wordplay and idioms do not translate across languages.
When you have two characters speaking Norwegian to each other, they are not going to be using American English idioms and wordplay puns. It was very jarring and broke my immersion completely.

I enjoyed the female lead character somewhat. The plot itself was scientifically impossible.

I know a large number of readers would not be bothered by these things and may enjoy the fast paced plot, vivid descriptions and a slow-burn romance subplot, but I didn't.

I was surprised. Put off a bit at first by the semi-paranormal references to Norse mythology, but quickly got hung up on the book. Maybe not great literature, but I really enjoyed the main character (the guy was a bit two dimensional), and could hardly put it down. A fun read.

I would have given this a 4 rating for pace, interest and easy reading style, but the chip on the main character's shoulder was a bit much.
