Walter Elliot is a writer, broadcaster and historian who has collected vernacular and oral poetry of the Borders in The New Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border 1805 - 2005.

Born in Selkirk in 1934, Elliot spent his early life in the Ettrick Valley. After his national service in Northern Ireland, he spent over thirty years as a woodcutter/fencing contractor, and four years as a Museums Assistant, all in the Borders. He has since been self-employed as a writer, broadcaster and historian.

He writes poetry in Scots, and has brought out several pamphlets, including A Song for Yarrow (1991).
