Princess Emiana is beauty and grace itself. Raised in refinement, nursed in tradition, and fashioned into the perfect bride for the shadowed fae King of Wind and Wild.
Too bad that b*tch ain't me.
I’m the poor, lowly, magicless wretch whose desperate sacrifice to save my sister's life resulted in me being captured, cursed, and forced to marry in the princess's place.
Now the king has me in his hold.
There's only one way to break the curse, and return to the siblings and dying mother who need me. Make the cruel, heartless, devastatingly handsome king, whose previous wives have all disappeared, truly give his love and heart to me.
Impossible is not a word that holds power over me anymore.
Impossible, but I tamed the beast. Impossible, but I ignited a fierce and fiery passion between us that turned our marriage bed to cinders and set the kingdoms on fire. Impossible, but I made the biggest mistake of my life.
As war looms on the horizon and everyone I know and love is dragged into destruction, I'll discover the true evil lurking in the kingdom of Wind and Wild, and that she doesn't like to share.
Kingdom of Tricksters and Fools is book one of six in the Kissed By Thorns series. The release date will be brought forward.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Our FMC, Calli is such a great character. I love when men think they have put women in their place just to be outsmarted by them. Monster romances are becoming my latest go to. Apparently I love the world of Fae beings. This book breaks out of the typical tropes, and gives us so much more then a romantasy novel. I highly suggest this one.
Mixed feelings on this one. I loved most of it, disliked some of it. Warning: cliffhanger, and the sequel is due in a year??
Mood Readers: This dark fantasy has many things to recommend it. It is an epic story of hatred, war, cruelty, injustice, loyalty, love and terrible curses. The FMC is poor, powerless, smart and tough. She fights her terrible circumstances with everything she's got. The MMC is a ruthless and ancient beast-man, king of a cursed people. The different cultures of the kingdoms are well-developed as is their history, their wars, their mythology and magic. There's the patriarchal fae, where only women have magic, but it is "bound" at the age of 10 so women never pose a threat to the evil king and aristocracy. On the other side are the beast people, cursed to slowly turn into every type of animal (bird, possums, wolves, cats, etc), and they are ruled by a 1,000 yr old blood-thirsty, merciless alpha. There are more kingdoms, but these two are the focus of this story. To bring peace and stop the hundred years of war, the princess of the fae will wed the vicious beast king.
The trick of the story is that the magic-less peasant girl is forced by the princess into switching bodies right before the wedding. It is forbidden magic which renders it a terrible curse. The princess will take Calli's appearance and flee the kingdom with her lover. Calli, raised in a gutter, now forced into the scheming princess' body, cannot speak her true name or the nature of the curse. She also shares the princess' memories, and at times the haughty, vicious personality of the princess takes over, so Calli is constantly fighting for her true memories as well as the horrifying reality of marrying Alisdair, the Beast King.
Calli was raised as a girl living in a vile patriarchy where women's magic is bound so that they are helpless to defend themselves, often used as forced bedwarmers for men, especially at the front of a vicious war between their society and the "beast people." Called "war wives," they are forced to "comfort" as many men as possible, but their children are the women's responsibility afterwards, often in poverty.
Calli is the oldest child of a "war wife," a woman currently being forced into a sexual relationship by a cold-hearted noble, the father of one of her sisters. Her mother is also suffering the inevitable dying stages of a wasting disease that kills all women because their magic is forcibly bound at age 10 so that men, who have no magic, can rule the kingdom without magical interference. Their family lives in terrible poverty and at the mercy of every male around them, poor and noble alike.
When the father of one of her sisters tries to force her sister to become a war wife, Calli takes her place. That's when the princess' lover finds her and the cursed magic forces her to become the Beast King's bride.
Thus begins an interesting story of the peasant princess, who only has her wits and intelligence (in conflict with the memories and personality of the cruel princess), struggling to survive the many unknowns - her brutal husband, the beast people, the many curses on the land, the traditions and customs of this foreign land, and the secret history of these people and their brutal king.
This tough 20 yr old girl faces her new husband at their wedding with this vow:
“Princess, you will repeat after me: I do vow—” I slapped the book of vows out of his hands, sending him flying after it with a cry. “I’ll take over from here,” I dropped. “I vow to be nothing but a nightmare, a festering sore, a gnawing ache, a splitting headache for the rest of our short union. “I vow to spend every day and night running from you—fighting to get back to my true home and freedom.” Visions of my family spun in my mind. “I vow that I will never love you, want you, or delight in a single peaceful, pleasant moment with you."
-And then she runs a sword into the chest of the Beast King.
- And then Alisdair the Beast King laughs and pulls the sword out of his chest.
He snapped the book shut, smiling wider if possible. “This I vow to you, little bird. Not peace, or happiness, or love, or friendship, but I do vow you will never be bored... and you will always be mine. This I promise for the rest of my days—may they be many or few.” He swooped down and kissed my lips so fast, he was already pulling back when I squawked and jumped away. “I leave that up to you.”
I loved the complexity of the culture, the people, the history, the conflicts, the twisted magic and the curses, as well as the complexity of the relationship between Calli/Emiana and Alisdair, and all their family, friends, courtiers, servants, townspeople and enemies.
I struggled with the florid dialogue, especially the first 50% of the story. It sounds like "Unhand me, you blackguard!" But the second half of the story, the dialogue was more conversational.
I also struggled with the "fireworks" ending, where there were multiple betrayals, battles, surprise shock twists, and too many enemies coming forth at the same time. And the cliffhanger ending with no sequel in sight.
All in all, I'm glad I read it, it was interesting and the kick@ss heroine was a nice surprise. But it has its flaws, that's why I rated it 4 stars.

Kingdom of Tricksters & Fools, the first book in author R.A. VincentKissed By Thornsseries, told solely through the FMCAna'sPOV made for somewhat of a tangled weave of web narrative. Then again that shouldn’t be surprising since it is something the author does all too well. The further into the story she had me going, the deeper she reeled me in having me holding on with a tight grip.
This Dark Romantasy set in the world of Fae and other creatures comprised of quite the in-depth, meticulously detailed world and character building story, from author R.A. Vincent giving us the full lay of the land. In all honesty this is why it is hard to put this review into words, with wanting to do it justice. There is much to be said about both the plot and characters development, given the wild and chaotic rollercoaster it had you riding all throughout the journey. Whilst the narrative did give a sort ofBeauty and The Beastvibes retelling, it still held a uniqueness in the spin that author R.A. Vincent put within the plot. Making it very different and not as straight forward like others in my list of previously read Romantasy, Fairytale Retelling books.
Kingdom of Tricksters & Foolshad quite a rich and fulfilling plot line that had much to tell and show. Not just because of the FMCAna and MMCAlisdair, who definitely added to the richness. But with this being the first book inKissed By Thornsseries, it meant laying down the full foundation with exploring through all the jumping into different worlds and the secondary characters that came along with it, seeing as it paved the way for subplots being added to the overall main plot in this storytelling.
Every page turn had you gripping on tight, considering the not knowing what was around the corner. Especially considering some of the plot twists and turns that author R.A. Vincent threw in. They had me gripping on tighter, from being thrown for a loop, having not expected it, and wanting to see just what and where it would lead for Ana and Alisdair. It’s ultimately what made for a thrilling, action-packed, drama filled, tension forming, suspenseful building, considering the constant growing to the mysteries with all the secrets alluded too, along with being somewhat angsty and emotionally driven plot. Yet still entertaining given the laughter bought to the table from quite some hilarious moments in many scenes throughout. Adding lightness into the plot, given the major intensity that constantly came about.
There was just something to be said about the FMCAna, considering the story is told solely through her perspective, we were able to get the full lowdown into everything that was Ana. From what makes her tick, to her life including her family as well as her thoughts, opinions, views and emotions. All due to the whirlwind journey she found herself upon. Even more so when it came to her relationship with Alisdair. Seriously from all the highs and lows, back and forth, ups and downs, pushing and pulling, it was no wonder it made for a tempestuous relationship at times between the two. Whilst still being entertaining. Then again with the added addition of the many situations and events that Ana and Alisdair found themselves facing, enduring and suffering through, it was no wonder it played into making their relationship as it was from what it made them do, how they acted and be towards one another.
One things for sure, regardless of lows and downs Ana and Alisdair ventured through in their emotions they showcased for one another towards each other. Though mainly on Ana’s part. It never detracted from the chemistry shared, given all the highs and ups they went through in the very Super Sizzling, Unrestrained, Lustful, Spicy scenes that was definitely Steamy from being Raunchy, Racy and Risqué simultaneously at times. Once they fully gave in by caving to their growing feelings towards each other, though more so for Ana. It eventually allowed them to let loose completely and give into the intense, amorous, passionate moments between each other.
There are a couple things that need to be said, one the story had me wishing it was told through dual POVs, since it would have added to the overall story with being able to see and hear everything from Alisdair’s perspective. Particularly in regards to the moments shared between him and Ana. Here's hoping to, fingers crossed, book two will be told through dual POVs. And two, IMO the story did feel a little long winded from unnecessarily being a little drawn out at times. To me personally the book could’ve done with being shortened, whilst still delivering the same narrative that led to an entertaining read that was greatly, enjoyable.
Oh Meya! That ending though, which had me yelling out for sure. How dare R.A. Vincent leave me dangling with that cliffhanger! Book twoParade of Rebels and Traitorscould not come fast enough!
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
⁃ High heat, slow burn ⁃ M/F ⁃ Dark, possessive MMC ⁃ Swapped FMC ⁃ Gutted by a sword during marriage ceremony ⁃ She never does what I expect! ⁃ Monster romance ⁃ Single, first person POV - BANTER
“ I plunged a sword in his chest, and the man married me. Alisdair never does what I expect.” But neither does Emiana/Calli!
The Characters: Emiana/Calli: At first the FMC is a slum dweller caring for her sisters and brothers as her mother lays dying. Forcibly switched by the princess of the human kingdom to wed the monster, Calli slowly loses her sweetness and caring self to become more like the ice princess known for her disregard. Neither wanted to marry, so Emiana (I will stick with that name) does everything I don’t expect throughout the story. She shocks me; she surprises me. She makes me laugh and yell, “You go, girl!” I swear this is Alice in Wonderland....
I don’t want a dual POV, and I am grateful. The beast, the monster, promises 4 big O’s a night, and he delivers. I don’t know if I could handle that much sex, but Emiana takes what he offers and asks for more. She schemes; she does the unexpected.
Alistair: “She is my wife. She can murder me a thousand times, but no matter what she does, it is my honor to die for her, and my pleasure to kill for her.” He is that dark, supportive book boyfriend who clings so much he could be an extra appendage, and I love him.
The World: The humans and fae are on the cusp of war, so the king arranged a wedding. But underneath it all, there are differences that make one wonder which side we would choose. In the human kingdom, all women are prohibited from using magic, and their magic is stolen by men. There is a strong class system where the serfs have to tithe most of their food to the king. It’s not a healthy system.
The fae are the classic depiction: fae who are ‘becoming more animalistic.’ A group led by the werewolves deplores the fae attempts to maintain a semblance of civilization, but Emiana is introduced to, and also kept coddled from, the fae who still use silverware and jewelry. The worst of their habits are somewhat hidden from Emiana.
The Romance: It is absolutely a romance, but one in which the FMC, whose power was torn from her, demonstrates that you don’t need absolute power to make a difference. She is named queen well before she or Alistair free her power or her kingdom’s people. Despite her poor upbringing (or Emiana’s inability to partake in kingdom affairs), her judicial decisions and her regard for the children are inspiring! Emiana spends an exorbitant amount of time attempting to make Alistair love her while holding back her love, but none of her attempts were bland or rote. I think my favorite scene might be the one after she gets tutored on how to ensnare a man, and she tries sultry dancing. It’s not pretty.
Tired of bland, copycat romances? Tired of writing for a trope? I think I found a cure here. I loved the novel. The only part I would criticize is the length. I peetered out before the end and had to just admit to myself that loving a book doesn’t mean I can finish it.
enemies to lovers retelling of beauty and the beast
Quick Summary: 🌶️ 5/5 Chili Peppers – Explicit content alert fully open door policy on this one. And if you grab the special edition, the full-color art takes that spice to the next level. 🥵 3.5/5 Smut Scale – Smut isn’t the main plot, but it’s woven throughout the book in ways that enhance character relationships. ⭐ 4/5 Stars – A dark fantasy Beauty and the Beast retelling. Key word: DARK! Bonus points for balancing heavy themes with humor and giving us all the witty banter from a verbally strong and fierce FMC- she’s still learning her fighting skills, but holds her own.
Now, the details:
Alright, book nerds—A Kingdom of Tricksters and Fools is here to steal your sleep and your sanity. Don’t ask me how I know… Fine, I’ll tell you: I was up until 2 a.m. devouring the physical copy, then downloaded the Kindle version so Alexa could read it to me while I worked, only to finish the last few chapters with the physical book in hand. Multitasking goals, am I right?
I fully recommend the Kindle version and to leave the physical book at home as a shelf trophy 😉 The physical special edition book is stunning—the kind of cover that makes you feel fancy just holding it, sprayed edges and attached bookmark. Inside, you’ve got full-color art that is… well, let’s just say it slaps. Hard.(and that’s not the only thing hard and slapping in the artwork) But maybe don’t leave it open on your coffee table unless you’re ready for Aunt Karen to ask some very awkward questions.
Now, let’s talk spice—because OH. MY. GOD. This book doesn’t just leave the door open—it rips the hinges clean off. I’m talking 5-alarm, chef’s-kiss, fan-yourself levels of steam. And those wedding vows? I swear, I fist-pumped like I was back in 2006 and the DJ just dropped Yeah! by Usher. Never thought I’d cheer for someone reciting “romantic” promises, but here we are.
Plot-wise, it’s an enemy to lovers Beauty and the Beast retelling, but with more fae, more danger, and a beast who’s as broody as he is hot. “Princess Emiana’s” got sass, smarts, and zero patience for nonsense, which makes her banter with Alisdair chef’s kiss levels of delightful. The tension? Thick enough to cut with a butter knife. The world-building? So vivid you can practically smell the fae magic (and probably some morally gray decisions).
Couple small warning: This is a DARK retelling with a forced marriage for political reasons. And - There’s a cliffhanger. Yep, just when you’re fully invested, Vincent pulls the rug out and leaves you emotionally stranded until the sequel drops in this planned trilogy. But hey, what’s a little emotional damage between friends?
Final verdict: looking forward to the next two books in this series from one of my fave authors.
Who doesn’t love a kingdom where your companion will provide for your every need, both recreational and sexual? The snark is superlative. He popped up, dropping that subservient tone so fast, I looked for it on the floor. Such a thoughtful thing to do....Must mean he’s about to do something I’ll hate even more.
This plot is different from any I remember ever reading. A princess has her lover find a peasant who somewhat matches her physical attributes and performs a spell that swaps their appearances. Not only that but this makes it impossible for the cursed girl to speak of her affliction. The curse will gradually make her forget her former life so the girl attempts a few tricks to prevent that. The newly fake princess is forced to marry an enemy king to enact a peace treaty. Needless to say our girl won’t accept this without a fight.
What happened when Ana seemed to exude white light when she was fighting the wolves? It felt like she managed to break the bond but no further reference is made. What does being moon-kissed mean? The “real” Emiana was disgusted by it but Alisdair found it “interesting."
Color me amazed that Emiana hasn’t at least made an attempt to release Constance’s soul to give herself all that power. I hope _____* remembers her true name soon or her marriage to Alisdair is going to be one big clusterfuck.
Who was the woman with magic that was able to send Calli back to Lumenfell?**
Here’s a BIG, no, HUGE question. Calli has returned to Lumenfell. She sees Meallan stirring up the mob. Calli has already killed once using her bow and arrow. Meallan turned his back on her. Why didn’t she shoot him then? . So, it looks like the bad guys are winning. Apparently being moon-kissed is a big deal. Constance seems to think she will be able to take advantage of it. Unfortunately, this won’t be continued until 9/27/25 (placeholder date, so hopefully sooner)
*I’ve gone over several early chapters and can’t find her name. There are several terms of endearment but no moniker. Finally! It's revealed in Chapter 15. How in the heck did Foalan and Alisdair know it? Is history repeating itself? How could there be portraits of Calli as a former queen?
Read this book in my book club and in all honesty, I still struggle with my true and honest rating of this book. In my opinion, It’s definitely not bad enough to be a 2, but a 3 does also seem a bit high in some areas.
Ultimately, I really liked the love-hate dynamic between the 2 main characters and how aggressive their relationship was—especially the addition of the “game” the 2 played each night where Emiana would run and he would have to catch her. Without giving too many spoilers, I thought this dynamic was unique and the author did a good job at setting her characters apart from leads in other books.
But on the flip side, the larger “beauty and the beast” storyline concept was unoriginal and boring to me: the rose, the man turned beast, etc—I hate all of that. And worst of all, there are many gaps in the storyline that left me with more questions than answers. The ending of the book was poorly written in my opinion—and it left me with no desire to read a second book. The only reason the book scored as high as it did for me was because I enjoyed the background storyline of “princess emiana” and then the initial love-hate relationship the 2 main characters fostered. But overall, not the best book and I would not recommend unless interested in just reading a few steamy scenes.

Omg this book was insanely good! I freaking loved it! It was unhinged and exciting. I loved the Beauty and the Beast theme. These characters are amazing Alisdair is such a complex character. Call is amazing and smart and I wish I could be here haha except when she’s being embarrassing lmao. Honestly the only thing that would make this book better (to me) would be dual POV because I need to know what goes through Alisdairs head when Calli starts mouthing off 😂 But, seriously this book was incredible and I highly recommend it. I cannot wait for book 2. R.A. Vincent did an incredible job with this story!!
As someone who has seen and read quite a few dark fantasy/retelling stories inspired by Beauty & The Beast, I'm always curious about what new spin each author will encompass when tackling such a popular theme. R.A. Vincent brought a brand new life to such an iconic and classic story.
At first, I was apprehensive since it took a bit to get moving and grooving, but once it did, I had a hard time putting this story down. The MMC is my personal favorite, however, the side characters truly gave him a run for his money. Also, I shouldn't fail to mention that the unmistakably determined FMC is one to watch out for as well. *Would love to see future stories with these characters in dual POV *
I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series.
Not the worst but not the best. Some plot points, especially the resolution at the end, came about suddenly, out of nowhere. I realize this is an independently published book, but it really could have used at least one more editor/reader to catch not just the typos but all the places sentences didn't make sense or were inconsistent with other statements made - sometimes in the same chapter, even page. I'd like the author to stop using this format: "Argh!" I screamed. Or "Ahhh!" I moaned. No need to write out the sounds, just let the reader create those in their mental picture. Once or twice would have been tolerable, but it's throughout the entire book.
The books summary hooked me in the best way. I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of beauty and the beast. The characters were enchanting and complicated. (Would love a short or something from the MMCs perspective). I really loved the embarrassing parts, always make me laugh so hard. Dark fantasy is a personal favorite and this one can definitely put itself in that category. Also this book was a great size at under 600 pages. Cannot wait for more.
A magic less peasant girl cursed into switching bodies with a princess who wanted to elope with her lover and escape her arranged marriage to a tyrant king. Calli, our poor peasant girl is on a fight to survive and get back to her family who is dependent on her. The storyline felt different, heroine has a backbone and the world where she is raised is oppressive and treats women as chattel. Recommend!
Authors who consider themselves so awesome as to think readers will wait a year for the next installment of their unfinished books (let alone pay for said 'privilege') are delusional. There are too many of you and your work is not worth the effort. Bye Bye R A Vincent.
I really wanted to like this one it’s been on my TBR for like a year before it finally came out, but I just couldn’t get into it. Something about the characters fell flat for me. I think it was the wedding sequence where I really started to be like ummmm I’m not connecting with this unfortunately. I gave it til 20% before I decided to stop because I wasn’t getting any more invested

A story of vivid imagination and creative storytelling which was an absolute delight to read. The story played out with one mesmerizing twist after another. I couldn’t put this book down once I began. Great characters, riveting drama, suspenseful action, tantalizing mystery and beautifully crafted romance. I only wish that the next book was out now. Loved it.
My book club uses a gumball machine of everyone’s TBRs and this was chosen- and I’m so happy it was! I DEVOURED this book in 2 days and I can’t wait until September for the second book! This was a hidden gem and I can’t wait for the rest of the book club to finish it!
Alisdair and Calli Fantasy, romance, Beauty and The Beast inspired. The plot kept me engaged and eager for more! It was filled with drama, feelings, some humor, magic, and much more! I loved both, Alisdair and Calli. Great beginning to their story and I can't wait for more!!
