Peter and Gigi Winsted will never forget July 7, 1982. That night, a malevolent entity known as “The End” forced the quarantine of Crowe County Hospital’s North Belfry. A brutal cleanse followed, killing the 237 people who were unable to evacuate in time. “The End” disappeared with them. By the fifteenth anniversary of North Belfry, Gigi and Peter are a nurse and paramedic for Crowe County Hospital. Their work ties them to controversial legends from the hospital’s tragedy, practitioners who do their best to ignore the past, in a medical community hellbent on two things—surviving shifts and keeping patients alive. But as July 7 draws near, reminders of North Belfry’s collapse are seen at every turn. The Winsteds and their coworkers grasp for sanity and hope in a week of lycanthropic anaphylaxis, ethereal violence, and hospital security failure until they can no longer ignore the inevitable. The past is coming for them. Whether they like it or not.
I loved this book, I got an early copy and I have to say it was entertaining the entire time. The concept is so unique and the universe that it is written in is awesome. The way the book is written I was able to imagine everything like a little movie playing in my head. I won’t spoil anything but this book mixes the realities of working in a hospital setting (or any high stress job) with ghosts, hauntings, and creatures of the night! I can’t wait to see what the next book in the series is!
I just loved this book. From start to finish, the dry humor and fantastic wit, the twists and turns, the creepy and the uncomfortable…for a newly published author, this book does not disappoint. The story and characters carry the reader through the unique and creative setting of Crowe county and Crowe county hospital during a turbulent time with heart, laughs, and plenty of exciting (in both the positive, uplifting as well as downright disturbing sense) situations that arise throughout the timeline. I am not one to willingly read books that have the potential to creep me out but I am so glad I picked this one to dive into. Needless to say, I could not put it down. It was so enjoyable, definitely gave me a nightmare or two, and made me laugh out loud. I cannot recommend this book enough and I truly look forward to more tales from Crowe County!!
Imagine a world where the paranormal is routine, the occult is a staple, and the monsters under your bed are there to protect you from the things that go bump in the night…
If you can imagine that, then you’ve just stepped into the world of Crowe County.
Tory was able to craft and pull together a unique world that felt so real, it played like a movie in my mind as I read it. All the spooky parts were so vivid it made me question why I was reading it right before bed. But the sweet moments (there were a few!) just melted my heart and left me wanting more!
Read if you love: - Adult, Medical Horror - Multiple POV’s with interconnected stories - Elaborate writing and world building - Elements of witchcraft and the paranormal
Such a fantastic debut for all the lovers of supernatural horrors and thrillers out there!
CW: Medical/Healthcare Trauma, Gore, Clowns (I have a fear of clowns and there are a few parts with a clown and I was DYING. So yes, I’m including it as a content warning for anyone else who may also have a fear of clowns)
I was so drawn to how creative this was. It’s set in its own weird version of a place that reminds the reader of home, yet introduces characters, perspectives, the supernatural, and events from the wildest depths of your imagination.
It’s a great balance of a well-developed story, humor, gore, and downright weird stuff. I couldn’t put it down and it’s great for a quick read. You never know what is lurking around the corner (or on the next page) and I found myself smiling as I was reading at the creativity alone.
This is a fast paced medical horror novel with a heavy paranormal aspect to it.
While the story itself didn’t necessarily “wow” me, the world building and character depth that Tory weaved into this is so elaborate and creative, it was still well worth the read. A little dry for my taste but I would still recommend giving it a read as it seems a lot of people really enjoyed it.
What an awesome, entertaining, and creepy first book by Tory Tallberg. Interesting characters, twists and turns, and mysteries that I hope to see unfold in future tales from Crowe County (I need to know so much more about Alex and their creature under the bed!) This story grips from page 1 and leaves you wanting more at the end. Highly recommend!
