Just like at many holiday gatherings in North America, there is a lot going on at Bluey's family Christmas in Australia. I appreciated how the writers included a large family gathering in this picture book, including a video call from relatives in Bali.
Often there is a desire for white space in picture books, with as few characters as possible, as if children are unable to process the energy and activity that surrounds them. Children with large families will be able to relate to this, as a mirror, while looking out a window of intercultural understanding that it is summer in Australia at Christmastime, perfect weather for a barbecue and a swim in the pool. It's also a good message for children who don't exchange gifts at their own homes, but at a relative's instead.
Bluey's concern about her new toy is very relatable to young children, with her dad's playfulness a refreshing salve to overly serious parental portrayals. A successful entry in the world of Bluey.
