Not every courtesan has gone down in the annals of history like Ambapali. She was beautiful, intelligent, talented and, as the nagarvadhu janpad kalyani-the bride of the city-she went on to wield immense power amongst the nobles. Until she renounced all worldly pleasures to embrace Buddhism.

This vivid narrative tells the story of a young woman forced to follow a path because of the machinations of powerful people. Propelled onto the cultural centerstage in the Vajji republic against her wishes, betrayed in love, disappointed by friends, Ambapali's is yet the story of a strong woman determined to take control over her life. A remarkable, poignant novel about the dazzling glamour, daring romance, and sacrifice that marked Ambapali's life.

A fictionalized retelling of the story of the courtesan-turned-Buddhist nun, Amrapali/Ambapali, Tanushree Podder’s Ambapali begins with the impending death of the aged Ambapali. As she lies, old and infirm and tended by a young Buddhist bhikkhuni, Ambapali recalls her earlier life. From her growing up as the adoptive daughter of a gardener who found her as a baby, abandoned under a mango tree, to her meteoric rise to the court dancer of Vaishali, and then the nagarvadhu of the city. The success, the wealth, the popularity—and yet, the loneliness, the pain, the exploitation.

Ambapali is a fascinating story, and the author manages to show the human being behind the historical figure. Ambapali is realistically sketched, a living woman who is pushed into a corner because of her sense of duty towards her guru, and then finds herself, again and again, being used and betrayed by people around her: in particular, the men in her life, not least the parishad of Vaishali, who treat the ‘most beautiful woman in Jambudweep’ as something less than human. What Tanushree Podder does well, too, is to show how at least some of these people (in particular Bimbisara and Satyakirti) may have had valid reasons for behaving as they did: it helps portray them as rather more nuanced, three-dimensional characters.

The setting and the politics (mostly internal, of Vaishali, though there’s something of Magadha here too) are well-etched, and the story is told with a good bit of adventure, intrigue and suspense built in. There is the (very) occasional anachronism—bougainvillea, budgies, anacondas and tables of food—but nothing, really, that interferes with the enjoyment of the book.

Just finished reading Ambapali by Tanushree. Enjoyed reading it thoroughly.

I had, of course, heard about Ambapali but didn't really know the story, so reading this book was an enlightening experience. I enjoyed reading it thoroughly because the storytelling is really good, plus, it seems like a well researched book. A tale with several twists.

As we know Ambapali was a raj nartiki, later the nagarvadhu (the bride of the city) of Vaishali (in Bihar). When she was a sixteen-year-old chirpy girl, very much in love with her childhood friend Satyakirti, she won a dance competition, and that changed the course of her life and destiny.

The book is very well written; the language is neat and creates lovely imagery and apt ambience of the setting. Ambapali's character is well defined. I could envision her beauty and the aura; her vulnerability, longing and defiance. I loved her bonding with her father and friends. Her friend Priyamvada who stays with her through thick and thin is a darling. Her moments with Indrajit/Bimbisar are very expressive.

Two things that bothered me a little:

Sometimes, the narration jumps from one scene to another without any pause, scenes change abruptly, which was a bit confusing.

Also, since the story is told from multiple points of view, it would have been nice to read Satyakirti's pov, as well.

Overall, a very interesting and engrossing read. Pick it, especially if you like Historical fiction.

I wish the book were longer. It would have been nice to read more about the protagonist’s transformation from a simple village girl to the world-weary nagarvadhu (especially her early years as the raj nartaki).

In a plot where circumstances assume the role of chief antagonist, other adversaries of Ambapali get no time to shine.

It reads like a Chandamama katha for adults. Not that it’s a bad thing, but it could have been much larger in size and scope.

As a woman, reading about the ordeals of other women evokes a sense of distress within me, particularly due to my strong tendency to empathize deeply with my female protagonists. Be it Sita, Draupadi, or Drishadvati, their struggles resonate as my own. Despite my efforts to analyze the stories objectively, it remains a constant challenge to distance myself emotionally. Thus, it was no surprise when I felt a surge of anger towards Suvarnasena and a desire to confront the parishad members of the Vajji confederacy while reading the novel in question.

My introduction to the tale of Ambapali came through Ira Mukhoty's 'HEROINES,' but it was Tanushree Podder's 'AMBAPALI,' a fictionalized extension of that factual account, that truly ignited my passion. For those who aren't familiar with the story beforehand, this novel serves as an excellent introduction in its own right.

Ambapali, also known as Amrapali of Vaishali, held a prominent position in the 5th century BC. Residing in the ancient city of Vaishali during the era of Gautama Buddha, she flourished as a celebrated courtesan. However, a pivotal moment occurred during Buddha's last visit to her city, where he accepted a meal at Ambapali's palace, that catalyzed her transition from a hedonistic lifestyle to a simpler path. She embraced Buddhism by joining the Bhikkuni Sangh—an order of female monks dedicated to renunciation and meditation.

The novel commences with an author's note where Podder acknowledges employing her imagination to bridge the gaps left by sparse written accounts about Ambapali. This is followed by a prologue-like first chapter propels the narrative forward with the 'Song of Ambapali,' a psalm from the Therīgāthā—an anthology of short verses by elder nuns in Buddhism. This chapter offers valuable insights into the life of our eponymous heroine, capturing the period when she had wholeheartedly embraced her transition into a Buddhist nun. Subsequently, the ensuing chapters chart Ambapali's transformation from a docile girl to a bold and astute woman.

It's intriguing to observe that certain incidents from her life, recounted as anecdotes in the biographies of the Buddha and the Magadhian emperor Bimbisara, have been interwoven in the novel through a blend of fiction and fact. I found particular enjoyment in reading about her encounter with the Buddha; she, accustomed to seeing only desire in men's eyes, is moved by the compassion emanating from the gaze of Buddha. Podder has dedicated special attention to Ambapali's emotions, carefully capturing the sentiments that shaped her evolution from girlhood to womanhood. However, a more profound exploration of Ambapali's inner transformation would have added even greater depth to the prose.

Considering the historical context, it's evident that the author has exercised creative liberties with the original narrative. Therefore, I recommend approaching this historical fiction as it is—an enticing prospect for those captivated by the extraordinary story of ancient India's most renowned courtesan.

The book starts with Ambapali’s final hours and how the Bhikkhuni recites the verses and Ambapali prompts her here and there. Then we move on to her childhood and the story takes an interesting turn from there.
Found in the Mango grove and named thus, her parents shower her with love and her childhood is just like any other until her Guru asks her to enter a dance competition at the annual carnival. Her fate changes instantly and the life she dreamt of is lost forever.
Her Guru, Suvarnsena, takes control of Ambapali’s life and alienates her from her family and friends when she becomes the Raj Nartaki. Later, when the council decides to make her the Nagarvadhu [Bride of the city], young Ambapalli decides to take control over her life and makes decisions that will let her live her life the way she wants.
The attraction towards Bimbisara in disguise further changes the course of the story.
I never really knew much about Ambapali until I read this book. Even though the author has added a touch of imagination to the story, I could see the rich, glamorous, strong, and powerful woman she was and how took care of her life and became a Buddhist nun.
What I liked most about this book is the author bringing out the finest details from that era. Be it the dressing, food, customs, and even the details of the picturesque garden surrounding the palace, the description took me back to those times.
The characters’ emotions- the father’s unending love for his daughter, Ambapali’s innocence, lovesick Satyakriti, Bhimbisara’s attraction towards Ambapali, Suvarnasena’s greed and need for control over Ambapali’s life, and beautiful friendship between Ambapali and Priyamvada is so exquisitely painted.
The transformation of Ambapali from an innocent child to that of a mature woman who takes control of the reins of her life is portrayed well.
The story not only shows the life of Ambapali but also how society was so many centuries ago when women were controlled by men to meet their ways and means, decisions taken on the lives of women without even consulting them look no different from the world we live in now!
There was never a dull moment in this book. The pace was steady and
The cover of the book is attractive and fitting to the theme.
The only thing I wish was included was her life after embracing Buddhism and the details of her son.
In all, I enjoyed reading a very good book in one sitting and one that made me look for more details on the life of Ambapali. If you love historical fiction, you will surely love this book.
5/5 stars.

As someone hailing from Bihar, where stories of ancient India hold a special place in the hearts of the people, "Ambapali" by Tanushree Poddar resonated deeply with me. This book dives into the life of Ambapali, a simple and innocent village girl in ancient India who undergoes a transformative journey to become a matured courtesan. The story is filled with haunting memories of the past, lost desires, and love.

Throughout the book, we witness Ambapali's struggles, fears, and dreams. Her character is beautifully portrayed, and we see the pivotal roles played by her supportive father, her friends Priyamvada, Urmimala, and Styakriti, and the Buddhist monks who guide her back to the king she once loved. The narrative unfolds with Ambapali on her deathbed, with Bhikkhunis serving and looking after her, creating a captivating frame story.

The story takes us back to Ambapali's childhood, where she, along with her friends, visits the Vasant Utsav, a festival that marks the beginning of spring. Here, she encounters her guru, Suvarnasena, a retired courtesan of Vaishali, who cunningly tricks Ambapali into participating in a dance competition. As fate would have it, Ambapali is selected as the Raj Nartiki and later becomes the Nagarvadhu of Vaishali.

As the story progresses, we witness Ambapali's growing attraction towards Bhimbisara, the King of Magadh. The author intricately weaves historical details about the Magadh Empire and Vaishali, providing a rich backdrop for the narrative.

What I enjoyed thoroughly about "Ambapali" is how the book brings to life the vibrant culture, traditions, and social dynamics of ancient India. Tanushree Poddar's storytelling paints a vivid picture of the Magadh Empire and the allure of Vaishali, allowing readers to immerse themselves in that era. The struggles, aspirations, and ultimate transformation of Ambapali into a Buddhist nun make for a compelling and inspiring tale.

All-in-all, "Ambapali" offers a captivating glimpse into the life of a courageous woman who defies societal norms and finds her own path. Tanushree Poddar's portrayal of Ambapali's journey, the historical details, and the authentic setting make this book a captivating read for anyone interested in ancient Indian history and the indomitable spirit of individuals who dare to challenge the status.

This is a book that recreates history with beauty, love, loss, anger, deception and redemption.

#INSIGHT: Ambapali was discovered by the royal gardener, in the shade of a mango tree, abandoned as an infant. With the royal blessing, the gardener and his wife bring up Ambapali as their own. Her love for dance is nurtured under the care of Suvarnasena, a former court dancer of great repute. This teacher abuses the trust bestowed on her by her pupil by throwing Ambapali into a competition she was neither prepared for nor willing to participate in. Ambapali’s skill and beauty enchants the royal court and she is immediately appointed as the court dancer against her wishes. This marks the beginning of her troubles and the end of her innocence.

#REVIEW: Tanushree Podder has breathed life into the corridors of erstwhile Vaishali, describing with vivid imagery, the smells, customs and sounds of the era.
She skilfully paints a picture of great pathos through the protagonist, Ambapali, but she doesn’t make her destitute.

Ambapali, despite her circumstances, sets boundaries for herself, speaks up for herself, identifies emotional blackmail and calls it out. She has the emotional maturity to recognise friendship despite the friend marrying Ambapali’s lover.

Suvarnasena is exquisitely carved out of malice, jealousy, an absurdly inflated ego, treachery, deception and a disillusionment that her actions are in Ambapali’s best interest.

This is a very interesting story steeped in drama and the protagonist’s exceptional strength.

#STRENGTH:
1. Beautiful cover.
2. A beautiful story that is both educational and riveting.
3. Strong, well rounded characters.

#WEAKNESS: The scene set up is long and the story takes time to build but that is to be expected with new world building.

#BEST QUOTE:
“An army without a devoted leader is a mob, not an army.”

#TARGET READERS: This book is a gift to fiction/ historical fiction/ strong female-driven story lovers.

#GENRE: Fiction/ Historical drama/ Royal intrigue

#Rating- 4.4/5

There are very few books that I have read and could not stop my tears when it ended. Ambapali by Tanushree Podder was one of those books!
Ambapali is a beautiful book written by Tanushree Podder. This is a book that totally kept me hooked from the first page to the last. The author has done a wonderful job in crafting the characters, scenes, and emotions that make this book a truly moving read.
The main character, Ambapali, was a simple village girl in the ancient India, who because of unforeseen circumstances becomes a courtesan. A life that she never wanted. Despite being a beautiful and successful courtesan, Ambapali is haunted by her past, her lost desires and love, and struggles to find meaning and purpose in her life. As the story unfolds, readers get a glimpse into Ambapali's struggles, fears, and dreams.
The characters are beautifully described and crafted. From her father to her friends, who always were with her and supported her, to the kind and compassionate Buddhist monk who helps Ambapali find her way, the king who she once loved, each character is well-developed and adds something unique to the story. It is easy to become emotionally invested in the characters and their struggles, and this is what makes the book so moving.
One of the things that I loved about this book is the way the author describes the scenes. Whether it is a bustling street market, a tranquil garden, or a lavish palace, the author's vivid descriptions make it easy to visualize the setting and feel like you are there. The attention to detail is impressive, and it adds depth and richness to the story.
Overall, I highly recommend Ambapali to anyone who loves historical fiction, or anyone who enjoys a good story about the human experience. The book is beautifully written, the characters are richly described, and the scenes are amazing. It is a book that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it. In fact, this was one of the books which I never wished ended.

⏩Your favourite woman author

🏵️ Ambapali by Tanushree Podder is a thought-provoking and awe-inspiring read.

🏵️ Before I start talking about the review, let me ask, Who is Ambapali?

🏵️ Ambapali is the story of every girl who never stops fighting for herself.

🏵️ Ambapali is the story of every girl who has the courage to fight back.

🏵️ Ambapali is the story of every girl who chooses herself first; it's the story of every girl who stands up for wrong.

🏵️ Ambapali, a bubbly, sweet, beautiful girl filled with love, dreams of marrying her crush, Satya, who is also her best friend.

🏵️ Ambapali is a simple girl who just wants to have her small world with her love Satya, Baba Dharma, and her friends Urmi and Priya.

🏵️ A small village called Vaishali, where people are gathered for the biggest festival where Rajnartaki Nishigandha will perform.

🏵️ Ambapali, being her fan, gathered with her friends to watch her, along with Suvarnasena, her teacher.

🏵️ The one thing she didn't know was that this contest would completely change her life and turn it upside-down.

🏵️ From being a simple girl, she reached levels 9 of Rajnartaki and Nagarvadhu, but what exactly happened? How did her life change so badly?

🏵️ I felt so helpless while reading Ambapali's story.

🏵️ The pain, trauma, and betrayal she went through in her life were disgusting, but I also appreciated her bravery.

🏵️ But it also made me wonder if we aren't all  fighting the same battle where women are forced, harassed, and thrown by people who believe women are nothing but toys.

🏵️ Ambapali made me think about harsh realities; even in modernization, we still have these situations.

🏵️ I absolutely love the concept of Ambapali and how effortlessly & smoothly the author addressed the story.

🏵️ The bond between Ambapali and Dharma, her father, was my favourite chapter. A daughter wants her father to have everything in the world, but a father is also a man who stands by his principles.

🏵️ Will Ambapali be able to escape this web? Or will she find someone who will fight for her?

Overall its mixture of romance, sacrifices and adventures.

Ambapali, written by Ms.Tanushree Poddar is an enchanting tale with a heady mix of facts and fiction. I have enjoyed the way the author has portrayed her protagonist who transforms and evolves on her journey of life.
Mythology has always had its’ favourite child in Men which the history remembers and unfortunately women were always eclipsed by men. This is one reason I always find it very interesting to read about women from mythology and all the more if the book is authored by a woman then my interest doubles-up.
When a woman tells another woman’s story the emotions and feelings are expressed in true sense and appears more realistic.
Here Tanushree starts her story with a climax scene where Ambapali is on her death bed in seclusion away from glory, fame, wealth and powerful men who thronged by her side always. I feel somewhere the author has tried to show how Amrapali is now detached from the materialistic world at the end. Then follows her story from her birth , how she was found under a mango tree by a Gardner couple and raised . She turns out be a paragon of beauty and a great dancer.
It’s a story of a simple girl pushed into the world of fame, money and power by other people, transforming her into a fierce and gutsy woman asa courtesan first and then a Nagarvadhu, owned by every man in her city. During this tumultuous journey she goes through betrayal, heart-break and deceit. It’s with resilience she accepts her fate.
Tanushree narrates the saga of this battered woman who doesn’t give up and finally takes control of her life which is commendable.
It’s only in the end when she comes in touch with lord Buddha that her life transforms.
Other highlights of this novel are Tanushree’s vivid imagery and interesting dialogues between the characters which makes it a delightful read.

👉The Crux:-

🔸 Ambapali is an amazingly written book by Tanushree Podder. This is a story about a girl called Ambapali. It starts with Ambapali on her deathbed and Bhikkhuni serving and looking after her.

🔸 Then the story is taken back to Amba's young tender age of sixteen when one fateful evening when Ambapali with her friends Priyamvada, Urmimala and Satyakirti went to see the 'Vasant Utsav' which was a kind of festival that happened during the ancient days in every kingdom to select a suitable Court dancer called Raj Nartaki.

🔹During that day Ambapali happened to see her guru Suvarnasena who was also a retired Raj Nartaki. Amba was tricked by Suvarnasena to perform on the Vasant Utsav which changed her fate and how things are changing in her life after that is the remaining story with many twists. Then how she becomes the Raj Nartaki in the court of Vaishali and the forced to become a Nagarvadhu. Grab this to know more about it.

👉My two cents:-

🔸 Ambapali is an engaging and engrossing read which elaborates on the story from the past ancient era. The language is simple and lucid. The narration is amazing. I loved the way all the characters are developed and how the story has been elaborated. This book saved me from my reading slump after some months of struggle which I faced for book reading.

🔹I enjoyed the book thoroughly and it hooked me till the very end. The book never loses its pace and races to the end but that ending turns me emotional. It's a great read one should never miss it. Overall, this is a highly recommended book for all historical fiction readers.

Ambapali is a story of a girl from a gardener's daughter to Nagarvardhu. The book starts with a poem where Ambapali is on a deathbed and she was helped by Bhikkhuni..while reading those lines I felt so hard....impressed with those lines and started to read Ambapali's life story...

Ambapali happy living girl with her four friends Priya, urmi and Satya. Her life changed in one dance performance n Vasant Utsav which made her "Raj Nartaki" of the kingdom...

The struggle started there, she was in deep love with Satya want to lead a normal women's life but fate decided something else for her who has moved to the palace given by King where she was staying with her guru Suvaranasena very greedy lady who always compel Ambapali to her decision...

There is no unity in the kingdom everyone from the court decided to make Ambapali Nagarvadhu -the wife of a whole kingdom.....

Again another shock in her life, she is not ready for all these things....already she is alone in this palace without her father and friends... the pain of Ambapali makes her strong..she doesn't have a choice but to reject the king's order but she has to do something...

How she overcomes all those things???what happens to her love for Satya whether Ambapali accepts her fate??? To know more also please read this book's new epic novel.... the story of a young girl till her deathbed, created an impression in my heart...

Ambapali, the one with the beauty and the brain, once the janapad kalyani, aka the bride of the city, loved and admired by all. This novel talks about the journey of ambapali to become the rajnartaki, then the nagarvadhu and finally a bhikkhuni. This is an impeccable tale of a strong woman, who gives up all her worldly possessions to embrace Buddha and his teachings and live the rest of her life as a bhikkhuni.

The writing of the book is sooooo sooo good that it literally transports you to the contemporary time of the Maurya empire. The narration is so so good that you can actually visualize everything, just in front of you. In fact, it made me feel that i was living at those times. I haven't read such beautiful work in a very long time. And I'm not even exaggerating. The plot of the book is beautiful and the characters are beautifully portrayed. Honestly, everything i say about this book is less. The language of the book is super easy and beginner friendly. I won't say much (though i have a lot to say). Please do give this book a shot and be a fellow fan of Tanushree ma'am!!

Just a masterpiece!

“It was time to surrender to death. The body had to perish so the soul could be reborn. And then there would be no darkness, just brilliance and wings. How can there be resurrection unless there is death?”

Ambapali was a very pleasant read. The epitomisation of the vicissitudes and fleetingness of the worldly life through the story of a courtesan who renounces luxuries and pleasures to become a Buddhist monk is a theme that evokes as much fear as awe. Although I would have liked more insight into her philosophical interactions with Buddha, the climax was very gratifying!
