I wrote one of the Goddess Shift chapters, and have been disappointed to see how little publicity this book has garnered. These women, famous and not so famous, have written some words of wisdom for the age we live in and the ages to come. Goddess Shift is an enjoyable read, and I like the way the book is organized into sections that show how women are making changes in different areas of endeavor. I love biographies and memoirs, and this book provides some fascinating insights into these women's lives.

Goddess Shift: Women Leading for
a Change
Editor: Stephanie Marohn
Publisher: Elite Books
ISBN: 978-1-60070-067-5

Women born in the new millenuim will have education, career and lifestyle options many of us could never have imagined, let alone have available to us. Tracing the feminist movement of the 70s, the changes thoughout the 1980s and 90s lead us to a reawakening of the nuturing power that women can have. Long before the image of God assumed the paternalistic attitude that is taught in most religions now, centuries of humans viewed the divine being or beings in a more nuturing, maternal manner, that of Goddess.

A stunning anthology of nonfiction articles, meditations, essays and reflections by many of the most recognizable and influential women of our time are brought together in this volume; Michelle Obama, Suze Orman, Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelo and dozens more, women who are leaders in every facet of life and diverse fields of endeavor share with all women in the hopes of empowering us to reach our own individual heights of success and fulfillment. This is an anthology to treasure, to share with all the women you know and love, and to refer to again and again for encouragement, motivation and growth. A thoughtful and wonderful book to pass on to our girl children and grandchildren, this reader/reviewer will keep her copy and refer to it regularly.

Book Review: Goddess Shift: Women Leading for a Change by Stephanie Marohn

In "Goddess Shift: Women Leading for a Change," Stephanie Marohn presents a compelling exploration of the evolving landscape for women in the new millennium. This anthology brings together the voices of remarkable women such as Michelle Obama, Suze Orman, Oprah Winfrey, and Maya Angelou, each offering insights that inspire empowerment and leadership. Marohn's work not only celebrates the strides women have made since the feminist movements of the '70s but also reflects on the nurturing power that defines the feminine experience, revealing how it can lead to transformative change in society.

Marohn thoughtfully contextualizes the current moment by recognizing the unprecedented opportunities available to women today—ranging from education and career to diverse lifestyle choices. This newfound freedom represents a culmination of decades of struggle and activism that have reshaped societal perceptions of femininity and female potential. The legacy of earlier feminist movements serves as a backdrop for the anthology, reminding readers that the nurturing strength inherent in women has always been a powerful force, capable of driving change in various spheres of life.

Delving into the historical relationship between the divine and the feminine, Marohn contrasts the maternal depictions of the divine in ancient traditions with the often paternalistic views prevalent in modern religious teachings. This examination encourages readers to reflect on how these perceptions have shaped societal norms and individual identities. By reclaiming the maternal archetype, Marohn emphasizes the importance of nurturing leadership and the essential role women play in cultivating communities that thrive on care, collaboration, and creativity.

The anthology format allows for a rich tapestry of experiences and perspectives, creating a chorus of voices that resonate with authenticity and wisdom. Each featured contributor shares personal anecdotes, practical advice, and motivational insights that serve to uplift and empower women from all walks of life. The choice of such influential figures lends credibility to the messages, reinforcing the idea that leadership can be nurturing, compassionate, and inclusive. This multifaceted approach makes "Goddess Shift" a valuable resource for women seeking guidance on their own leadership journeys.

One of the powerful aspects of this book is its emphasis on intergenerational connection. Marohn positions "Goddess Shift" as not only a source of encouragement for contemporary women but also as a tool to inspire future generations. The messages contained within are meant to be shared, fostering a culture of mentorship and support among women. This forward-thinking perspective highlights the importance of building bridges between generations, ensuring that the progress made is sustained and passed down.

However, while the anthology’s diverse voices are a significant strength, some readers may find themselves yearning for a more cohesive narrative thread that could bind the contributions together. Each woman's story shines in its own right, yet the thematic connections between them could be more explicitly drawn to enhance the overall impact of the work. A more structured approach to weaving together these narratives might deepen the reader's understanding of the broader context and collective significance of women's leadership.

In conclusion, Stephanie Marohn's "Goddess Shift: Women Leading for a Change" is an inspiring celebration of female empowerment, leadership, and the nurturing qualities associated with the feminine. Through the voices of influential women, Marohn captures the spirit of a transformative era for women that honors the past while looking confidently towards the future. This anthology serves as a source of encouragement and a reminder of the vital role women play in shaping a more equitable society. With its profound insights and motivational messages, "Goddess Shift" is a powerful resource for women today and a gift to share with the generations that follow.
