I’ve picked up a fair few Marilyn books in my time, but this coffee table style collection is easily a favourite. Each full page shot of Marilyn seems to capture a different essence of her life and personality, and there are images from some of the most important photographers in Marilyn’s life (George Barris, Sam Shaw and Eve Arnold to name a few). What is most impressive about this volume is the spectrum of the photography: there are images that have most likely never been published anywhere else, and it doesn’t rely on the more infamous photo shoots that Monroe did in her time. There are no film stills or publicity shots to be found here either; instead only candid moments from her childhood, career and private life. These include her early modelling days, pictures taken on set (and off set with the leading men in her personal life) and on social engagements. Alongside these beautiful images are some insightful quotes, either from the lovely lady herself or someone who knew her. There is a very brief – and surprisingly scathing – biography at the beginning of the book, but frankly most of the admirers of Marilyn will be more interested in the photos than another ‘review’ of their favourite star.

মেরিলিন মনরো নামটি মনে হলেই আবেদনময়ী সোনালী চুল ও গাঢ় লাল লিপস্টিকের এক লাস্যময়ীর মুখ চোখে ভেসে ওঠে। কিন্তু এই হাসিমুখের পিছনে লুকিয়ে আছে কত দুর্বিষহ যন্ত্রণা !
শৈশবে নাম ছিল নর্মা জিন। পিতৃপরিচয় ছিল অজানা। একাধিক বিবাহ বিচ্ছেদে মা মানসিকভাবে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েন।নর্মা জিনের আশ্রয় হয় অনাথ আশ্রমে। মানসিক আঘাত দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া নর্মার শৈশব পার হতেই ১২ বছর বয়সে তাকে দত্তক নেন এক প্রতিবেশী। কিন্তু সেই পরিবারে অভাব দেখা দিলে আবারও অনাথ আশ্রমে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা তৈরি হয়। সেই নরকে না ফেরার জন্য নর্মা ১৬ বছর বয়সে বিয়ে করেন প্রতিবেশীর ছেলেকে।
এই বিয়ে বেশিদিন স্থায়ী হয়নি।
মডেলিং দিয়ে ক্যারিয়ার শুরু।অভিনয় করেন বিভিন্ন সিনেমায়। হয়ে উঠেন নর্মা জিন থেকে মেরিলিন মনরো।উল্লেখযোগ্য সিনেমা - gentleman prefer blondes,some like it hot, the seven year itch.
তাকে আর পিছন ফিরে তাকাতে হয়নি।এই সিনেমাগুলো তাকে বিশেষ খ্যাতি এনে দেয়। বছরের পর বছর মানুষ মেতে থাকে তার সৌন্দর্যে।
এরপরেও কয়েকবার বিবাহ বন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হন ও বিচ্ছেদ ঘটে। শৈশবের মানসিক আঘাত, বিবাহবিচ্ছেদ, একাকীত্ব,খ্যাতি হারানোর ভয়, মাতৃত্বহীনতা, অতিরিক্ত মদ্যপান ও অবসাদের ওষুধ সেবনে তার বর্ণাঢ্য জীবনের ট্যালি ৩৬ এসে থামে।জানা যায় মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্ট জন এফ কেনেডির সাথে ছিল গোপন সম্পর্ক।
তার মৃত্যুও বেশ রহস্যময়।বন্ধ ঘরে তাকে টেলিফোন হাতে মৃত পাওয়া যায়। মৃত্যুর রহস্য জট খোলার আগেই আত্মহত্যা বলে ধামাচাপা দেওয়া হয়।
সৌন্দর্যের আইকন হওয়া সত্ত্বেও মেরিলিন খুবই সাধারণ জীবন কাটাতেন। তিনি পড়াশোনায় খুবই আগ্রহী ছিলেন।তার সংগ্রহে ছিল বেশ ভালো ভালো বই।তার পছন্দের ব্যক্তিরা ছিলেন Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln,Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin
সৌন্দর্য, অভিনয় দক্ষতা ও ক্যামেরার সামনে স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত উপস্থিতি মেরিলিন মনরো কে নিয়ে গেছে এমন শিল্পে যার চর্চা এখনও ছেলে থেকে বুড়ো , সাহিত্যিক থেকে চিত্রকর সকলেই সমানে করে যাচ্ছে।হয়ত তার আবেদন কখনোই ফুরোবে।তাই হে নারী তুমি অনন্য।

Once you get past the horrendous introduction there are some important quotes and then a great mixture of famous and rarely-seen photographs, particularly from her childhood and youth.

As a huge fan of Marilyn I totally love this book. Lots of beautiful pictures of her along with some narrative. Definitely a collectors item for those obsessed Marilyn Monroe fans like myself...! :)

I'm very into Marilyn Monroe and I got this book for my birthday and loved learning more about her. She truly was fascinating.

What can be bad about pictures and quotes about Marilyn Monroe. There wasn't much to read but I thought some of the photographs were amazing.

Another visually stunning book on Marilyn, but why they chose to include film critic David Thomson's snide introductory essay is beyond me.
