Major Obsession is based on the memoirs of an African-American combat medic in Vietnam. As a teenager, the author leaves his Virginia home to enlist in the Army. Turner is so determined to serve in Vietnam that he ignores his asthma and discards prescription medication related to other ailments. Turner shares his up-close and personal Vietnam experiences. He gives an eyewitness account of how African-American troops were affected by the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy. Finally, Turner describes his own personal battle with post-traumatic stress disorder.
