Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose visit New York City! Dink's uncle is the curator of a museum with a dazzling new treasure--a statue of a jaguar cradling an emerald between its front paws. But when it's discovered that the emerald has been replaced with a fake, Dink's uncle is the chief suspect. He'll go to jail if Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose can't uncover the real thief! From the Trade Paperback edition.
Ron Roy has been writing books for children since 1974. He is the author of dozens of books, including the popular A to Z Mysteries®, Calendar Mysteries, and Capital Mysteries. When not working on a new book, Ron likes to teach tricks to his dog Pal, play poker with friends, travel, and read thrilling mystery books.
I loved the A to Z mysteries books as a kid, and being someone who practically lives off nostalgia and still enjoys reading children's lit, I figured it was overdue for me to revisit this series. I picked this one up on impulse (and maybe because I love jaguars, even though the jaguar in question is only an artifact, but I digress), and... it was okay. It's very simplistic and basic which I kind of expected for this book's target audience. It reminds me of the Magic Treehouse or the Boxcar Children series. There's simply not enough depth or a puzzling enough mystery to keep my 30 year old brain engaged - and this particular entry didn't strike any memories, so I'm not sure if this is one I've read before. But, it was fine enough I suppose for a quick and easy read. I may hang onto the few copies I have from this series and maybe reread them on occasion for nostalgia's sake, but this may be one of those book series like the Boxcar Children that simply lives on better as a memory.
I'm not sure about this book, and fear it is degrading toward Magic Treehouse quality despite having a fixed cap on the number of books in the series.
- Gold is heavy, but weight is not how the 'heavy metal' group is defined. I am also pretty sure it is too soft for there to be solid-gold statues but I have not researched the topic. -
I did not like this book because I do not like thieves. I also did not like this book because I did not like the part when somebody switched a golden jaguar's jewel with a fake emerald. I enjoyed this book because I liked the part when Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose found the real emerald.
Another series for us to explore! Our oldest loves mysteries, just like her mom and we are excited for an alphabet series full. This is the first book we've read in the A to Z Mysteries series, but I know we'll be searching for more of them at our local library.
You should read this book because it is a wonderful mystery about a priceless gold jaguar with ruby eyes and a green jewel in its paws. I didn’t like it as well as the others because I figured it out half way through the book.
A thief who discover for Jaguar's jewel. But kids call the police, take that thief getting the jail. Kids found out jewel is swapped for faked. Rose uncover the real crook, who stole the jaguar's jewel.
Our favorite part was went Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose found the hidden camera and the tv. And when they took a horse carriage ride through New York at the end.
The uncle calls Dink "Donny". It is funny. The uncle is rich. I like money : [] Money. Spoiler alert repeat spoiler alert. This was published in 2000, so I turned the first page, saw the World Trade Center on the map of New York, and winced. Anyway, I read this in less than 40 minutes, and I definitely think my 5-year-old cousin should read it. I remember this as a favorite in the series because I found the story very clever--or perhaps I liked it so much because of my affection for art museums. Anyway, I wish I knew how many of the 26+ A to Z Mysteries I've read.
With this we have finished all the A to Z mysteries! I enjoyed them a lot. I would recommend the series to any early reader. The characters are relatable to my own 6 and 8 year old boys,’appropriate to listen for my younger kids when we are in the car. The same 3 friend last are in each book but other characters and places reoccur. This one is set in New York which is the same time page and characters I believe as R and O books. Either way a fun read for the whole family
Read these books when I was a kid and greatly enjoyed them, figured I'd give them a second read for kicks.
I certainly recommend any young mysteries fan devote time to this series, it's certainly a grand adventure for a young mind, the imagery of Ron Roy's words and his settings and unique character descriptions and personalities really help kids imagine a whole movie in their heads as they read each exciting page.
Excellent read aloud book. If you read with emotion then be mindful that you may not want to read towards the ending at night if you or your audience gets scared easily. It didn’t last long, I think maybe less than a chapter. This Mom’s audience consisted of the ages 5-18 and every one begged for more just the same as the other. We probably should have read this in 3-4 nights if we had stuck to the bedtime reading rules more strictly, but it only lasted two nights!
My 6-year-old daughter says: The Jaguar's Jewel was pretty good because of the mystery. I really did like the mystery. It was good because the characters were good.
My 4-year-old son says: I liked Dink and Uncle Warren. ALL FIVE STARS!
Mom says: This one takes the kids on a trip to New York City. This one was a good little mystery. As always, fun to read aloud.
tricky but not too tricky for the three detectives
I was able to guess who the bad guy was pretty quickly. Once you get into a routine with these books you know to look or pay attention to some of the small cues that the author plants in the story. You know they will probably come to the incorrect conclusion first and then change their minds and figure it out.
I liked the book because it’s a mystery and that the children are detectives I also like the fact that it’s in a museum and that it’s in a different city and that there are secret passageways and many other exciting things read the book yourself and write your own book report enjoy Rocking Rida out.
This was the first from the series we have read. Our first choice is always to read them in order but with the pandemic limits on libraries we grabbed it off of our shelf here at home. My 9 year old enjoyed it and I did too. We'll be checking out more I think soon.
While visiting his uncle Warren in New York City, Dink and his two best friends Josh and Ruth Rose help his uncle solve the mystery of the theft of a valuable emerald that was stolen from his uncle's museum.
Dink visits his Uncle Warren in New York City. Ruth Rose and Josh have traveled with him to sight see. While there they help solve a mystery of a stolen emerald. Who done it? We as a family have fun discussing that question. My son loves these books so much that he begs for one more chapter.
Thank you, Dink Duncan, Josh Pinto, Ruth Rose Hathaway, and Ron Roy, for the childhood memories. These books helped me to become a lifelong reader and lover of mysteries. Thank you, John Steven Gurney, for one of my favorite covers to come out of this series. The emerald on the cover is beautiful.
I love this series. The kids are solving real mysteries around their neighborhood (as opposed to their siblings), and they find out things that the adults couldn't.
Miss Linda read this book. Excellent book, part of a series which is good for 2nd-3rd graders. Mystery is interesting and fun and keeps you guessing until the very end!
