“I think of the musician’s job as that of a psychopomp, someone who conducts spirits or souls to the other world. In Greek mythology, Hermes, the messenger, was a psychopomp. As was Charon, the boatman who ferried the dead across the river Styx to the Underworld.

Grateful Dead was a ferryman, a conduit, a bridge to the spirit world, and the band provided a musical experience that offered safe passage to the other side. It was kind, dependable, and trusted for this task,” (Hart).
