I write erotic science fiction, paranormal and contemporary romances for Resplendence Publishing, Siren, Logical Lust and Cobblestone Press. In my other life, I write nonfiction. If you ever find me sitting in one place, it’s because I’m reading or writing.

I attended the University of Iowa as a creative writing major. Later I returned to school and became a Registered Nurse. You know, gotta make a buck! I am proud to admit that I was born and raised in Iowa, but I’ve lived, camped, hiked, traveled all over the United States and Israel. I am married with three children, a new puppy, two cats, two birds and two very lucky koi.

I like nothing better than to be out in the fresh air with my boys – hubby and dog! I’m a sports fanatic and I love riding horses – used to own three. Ten years ago, I lost my wonderful cutting mare to laminitis. I haven’t found a horse that can replace her. She was my best friend ever.

I come from a long line of amazing cooks – one of my great-great grandmothers was a chef to the Hungarian Royal Family – a fun day often involves creating a perfect meal. So I am all about food and fantasy and obsessive exercise – so I can eat my favorite food, chocolate!

All the best, Julia

*UPDATE 11-3-16*

It has been 3.5 years since I first read this book and after going through my 4 and 5 star list here on Goodreads I wanted the comfort of rereading a book that I had really enjoyed that wasn't just fluff. I needed love and action and I knew I had found what I was looking for in 'My Everything.'

Our hero, Ben McCall, is a top notch security agent who's wife, Julie, and unborn child were assassinated in a car bombing that was meant for someone else. He blames himself because it happened on a case he was the lead on.

Let's go back ten years. Ben was twenty-four and he and his partner, Tom, were leaving in a month for more in-depth training but during that month Tom wanted to take him to a topless beach in California. It was on this day that Ben first laid eyes on the woman who would end of being the love of his life. Her name was Grace and she was a beauty. They fit together like two puzzle pieces, two halves of a whole. They spent the month together and fell deeply in love. Ben was terrified of those deep emotions he felt for her and wasn't ready to settle down. When the thirty days were up he left and he never contacted her again. It was years later when he met and fell in love with Julie whom he married. He loved Julie but they didn't have what he had with Grace.

It bothered me as well as it did Grace that once he was at a place in his life to think about his future he didn't get back in touch with her. He spent those ten years trying to convince himself that he wasn't in love with her and then marries someone else who we hear about throughout the book. It was a bit disturbing and it hurt my heart that he never contacted Grace. It took a long while, years, for Grace to get over him enough that she was finally able to move on to love another man and become his wife. Two years after their marriage Josh passed away from leukemia. Grace moved forward with her nursing career and had become a pain specialist. **I understand their time apart, their separation, was just semantics. Grace had only been eighteen when she met Ben and she had her nursing degree to achieve and time to mature and Ben had the military and the specialty work he did for the government. In reality the time was just not right for the two of them. I realize that 100% but I just couldn't help that it bugged me that he never contacted her after the time they spent together...yes, I am a hopeless, or is it hopeful, romantic.

Grace is at a conference and she occasionally suffers from debilitating migraine headaches. To put it simply, she can't function, the pain so horrific that she loses most of her vision and suffers terribly. She felt a migraine coming on when after the evening conference her group went out to a noisy club for drinks. She knew she had to leave and stumbled out of the building to hail a cab. Once she was back at the hotel she barely made it to her room. She had her medication with her but nothing to take it with. She redressed (in her barely there nightwear) and made it to the vending machines to get a Coke. On the way back to her room she collapses in front of a hotel room door and is semi-conscious. When the visitor staying in that room arrived he knew he couldn't just leave her there but wonders if this is a set up, one of his enemies trying to distract him...well it worked, he thought, as his eyes caressed her long lean runner's legs. He lifted her and took her into his room and was able to get out of her that she was ill from a migraine. Once he lays her on his bed and her hair tumbles away from her face he is shocked to discover that this beauty once spent a month in his arms. It was Grace and his not-so-little man sprang forth at the sight of her.

This is where this great story begins and it is a ride. You see, Ben has been off the grid and has allowed people, even his family, to believe he was killed because he needed time to grieve, heal, to pull himself back together after his wife's death and that meant his enemies thought he was dead as well. He had to be extremely careful because his resurrection could get him killed for real. You see, he came back to the US from his secluded mountain-top home in Costa Rica because his business partner had used an emergency contact to get him home. That meant someone was out to get his partner, Tom, or they had figured out he wasn't dead after all and were after him.

Wow, the suspense kept me turning page after page as I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book. In my opinion this is a must read.

**Original Review 2-5-13**

I absolutely loved this book. It was a very interesting and mufti-faceted read. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I read it in one day.
Thanks to J.B. Barrett. Great writing!

Lena’s Review

It has been a couple of months but the pain is still in his heart. Ben loved his wife Julie and thought life would never be the same. The thing is when he meets Grace Adams his life as he knows it is turned upside down. Years ago he fell in love with Grace, but he was older than her so he moved on. Life though sure brings in the unexpected and now he must figure out how Grace fits in with his life. He thought he would never find love but someone is determined to make his life miserable. One minute he is in heaven in Grace’s arms then he is trying to save his woman. Someone close to him wants him dead for a something that happened years ago. Ben never thought his past would come back to endanger Grace but he is determined to make a life with her. Can he stop the man who wants him dead to be with Grace?

Grace Adams hates her migraines, they're nothing but grief for her. Yet it is because of the migraines that she meets Ben McCall again. The man she has never forgotten in her heart and somehow he is back in her life. She has no idea how it happened but she has fallen for Ben again. It is different though, for this time she is a woman who is feeling everything and confused about where their relationship can go right now. Grace is not sure who wants to hurt her man but will do everything she can to help Ben. The passion she feels for him is nothing like she had for her ex-husband and this makes her wonder that maybe she deserves a second chance at love. Can she stay alive to find out where this relationship will go with Ben McCall?

My Everything a tale about two people who found love but life interfered and changed everything. Poor Ben McCall lost his wife and since then has tried to stay normal. The death took all the love he had in him and meeting Grace Adams again confuses him. He thought Julie was the one and only but something about Grace blows him away. I loved that these two once shared something and life brought them together in a unique way. Grace is a woman who has had love in her life but death took over and now with Ben she is scared. Ms. Barrett did a beautiful job in the passion and love between these two. The action was great and the love was awesome between them. Great job!

Enjoyed this quick read ...felt like there were too many missing pieces to Ben and Grace"s romance and no real suspense ...felt very rushed .

I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. This was just the right mix of everything that makes a good read, except maybe finding The One at warp speed. This is about Ben and Grace who met ten years earlier had a brief affair for thirty days and that was the end when Ben shipped out on assignment. They both meet other people and marry and now ten years later a widow and a widower they reconnect under bizarre circumstances. Everyone is Ben's past thinks he is dead. Now he is summoned by a trusted friend to come back, someone has kidnapped his sister and is demanding Ben in trade for the sister.

I gave Ms. Barrett a little bit of a hard time on my review of her first book, Anytime Darlin’. There were things about that book that I liked but more things that I didn’t. But Ms. Barrett was very gracious, took her average grade from me, finished up her next book, and came back to us for another review. I’m glad she did.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sophomore book by Ms. Barrett. The storyline is intriguing and the hero and heroine have great chemistry. Now, that isn’t to say there aren’t a couple of little problems, but for the most part, I see growth in this author’s writing and I will continue to read her books.

Grace is in Los Angeles for a geriatrics seminar and her first night there, one of her infamous migraines is coming on. Back at her hotel she’s in such pain that she locks herself out of her room just because she wanted a cold and bubbly Coke. Out of options and nearly unconscious, she doesn’t even make it back to the door of her room when she’s overcome and not able to go any further.

Ben McCall has been in hiding since the assassination of his wife and unborn child, everyone assuming he’s dead because of his line of work. Losing everything has torn the joy out of his life and the solitude of Costa Rica has given him some measure of peace. But when the emergency call comes from his best friend Tom for help, Ben doesn’t hesitate. But what he finds out is someone has murdered two agents and kidnapped Ben’s sister all in an attempt to get to him, not Tom. He has a surprise waiting for him when he finally gets into L.A. A woman is passed out near the door of his hotel room. Coincidence or is she part of the nightmare that has just begun.

Ben doesn’t believe in coincidence, but in this case he’s hoping that’s what it is. The woman he rescued from the hallway is Grace, all grown up now from the eighteen-year-old college student he spent a month of glorious days with years ago. Knowing where his life was headed, he knew he couldn’t offer her more at the time, and they went their separate ways after an exciting but somewhat chaste love affair. He’d never forgotten her, though. His life went on, he married and had been starting a family.

They’re older now, but it’s like they were never apart, their love blossoming anew. Ben has to leave Grace after their night together, vowing to take care of the bastard who has his sister and then he can concentrate on Grace. What he doesn’t expect is Grace being pulled into the whole mess when she’s attacked in her hotel room. She escapes relatively unscathed and gives Ben information to work with to find his sister. In the meantime, Angel, Ben’s sister, is one smart cookie. She paid attention to all the things her big brother taught her and escapes from the maniac who’d kept her locked in a basement.

Though Angel is safe, they still have to find the scum who took her and that takes them into the San Joaquin Valley of California. (Had to mention that because that’s where I live!) And this is the only place in the story that I have a nitpick about. Ben and Tom are in Bakersfield looking for this asshole when Angel pulls her escape job. When she finds out that Ben isn’t in L.A., she insists she has to see her brother now before something happens and he maybe dies again. She goads Grace into taking her to Bakersfield.

Grace is an intelligent woman. She fought this jerk and won, so she knows firsthand how dangerous he is. She knows if they’re in the vinicity, Ben will worry about them while trying to do his job. But after all this logic, she still talks herself into taking Angel to Bakersfield to find Ben. Of course, they get there in the middle of everything going down and bad stuff happens. I realize the bad stuff had to happen for the story. I just wish we had gotten there in a different way. Especially because everything that happens after that point is terrific. I just felt Grace slipped a few points on the IQ scale, a little blip, so to speak, before she got back on track.

Other than that, this is a very enjoyable book. I liked all of the characters. The action and suspense is very well done. The love scenes between these two are sweet and poignant. The secondary characters have plenty of depth. I even liked/hated the villain, though he was a little convenient as a scapegoat, but it worked.

Well done, Ms. Barrett! You’re only going to get better with each successive book and I look forward to reading each one!

I received this book as a review copy from the author and after reading the blurb I was like "Okay we will see.". And I have to say this blurb doesn't do the book any justice.

The book is fast paced and written in such a lovely way, I just couldn't put it down. We switch from different POVs through the whole story but it made the story more 3 dimensional and not at all confusing. I loved how Ms. Barrett chose an unique voice for each of her characters. It made them so much more real in my eyes.

Our heroine Grace had a few grave moments in her life. She lost her husband to leukemia after only 2 years of marriage and she suffers from really hard migraine attacks from time to time. But she doesn't give up and tries to handle this all on her own. She is a specialist for pain management and it would look really unprofessional to have problems on exactly the same topic. While she has one of her attacks she meets Ben, her big teenage crush. He helps her and is more understanding and helpful than many other people in her life.

Ben is broken inside. He lost his wife and his unborn child in a terror assasination he should have prevented. He works in the security sector and it was his purpose and task to prevent things like that but he failed and got punished for his mistake. Or that is what he thinks. We all know that there are certain things in life we just can't stop from happening. We shouldn't stop trying to but sometimes it's just the way it is. And especially in this situation it's not at all his fault. As you can see I really felt for him. Poor man. He's a strongly caring person and although he vanished from the surface of his normal life for a year to hide and work through his grief, he still cares for his family and friends. When he hears that his best friend is in grave danger he doesn't hestitate and immediately starts his journey home. The moment he meets Grace again after ten years his first thought is that she is a distraction. But why? He quickly finds out how unlogical this assumption is and discovers his own attraction and perhaps a bit more for her. Surely he feels guilty for that and even more he knows that this is possibly the worst moment ever to get close and personal to someone he really cares about.

The situation gets even more dramatic when Ben finds out that not only his bestfriend is in danger but his sister got kidnapped to draw him out of hiding. The plot is really suspenseful and I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. The story is a great mix of relationship building and actual story plot. It always gave me what I wanted and it was a real satisfying read for such a short novel.

One thing at the end was a bit "Yeah, sure!" and I don't mean the supernatural aspect. I won't tell you more because that would be one gigantic spoiler but if I can forgive something like that other readers probably can, too.

All in all this book was a great read with scorching hot, emotional intense and thrilling action in a perfect mix. I can recommend this book to all the lovers of a nice steamy romance with the right amount of suspense!

Yeah this romantic suspence book right. Great story :)

Ben loved Grace from the start ten years ago, but he terrified about his intense feeling to Grace. So many reason he reject his feel to Grace. Because Grace still young at time, he convices himself that his just fallen lust for Grace and not ready for love for guy twenty four years at time. He not ready for settle down and doesn't has anything for give to girl.

Yeah i know all the reason in the world for reject true love.

i like this story, connection between Grace and Ben so sweet, they reconnected again and never feel like that with their partners before.

I want give 5 stars for this, but sorry if just 3 stars maybe because i have my reasons too.

I don't like the story when Hero find his true love and then he just let it go, meet with other woman and falling in love to the OW.

whereas i think that feel supposed to just for the heroine.

i feel like betrayed.

yeah yeah heart can't be ruled by brain. But in this story its like Ben decide to falling in love and to be loved in his specification when and with who.

Jeeezzzz...

maybe if this story when Ben meet Grace after that it's okay. But?????
life must go on, so many stories like this. Reunited story.
Usually Hero and heroine have separate ways because one of them hurt or have necessary condition around their life.

But Hero always remember heroine and never fall for other.

I really liked this novel. It was suspenseful. It was thrilling. And it was passionate. Grace and Ben's story was a sad one. A very sad one. The only way to really talk about their relationship in this novel is to say that in order for them to be together, they each had to go through horrendous and emotional pain.

I don't wanna say too much about the plot line, except that it was a great one. It held me captive until the last word on the last page.
The story included lots of physical scenes. And those scenes went perfectly well with the story. It added to it instead of detracted.

Plus, if you go to amazon right now, its free! What's not to like about that? Go and buy it! Immediately! I promise, you'll be happy you did.

This is a great book about loving someone and know it is not the right time to be together. Will and Grace met 10 years earlier with the job Will had he was unwilling to hold Grace back from finding a more stable guy. Both moved on with their lives and fell in love again both have lost their spouse for one reason or another. When they find one another again the pull is more than either can deny. This book is fairly fast pace, they meet get back together right away and are fighting to stay together this time. Maybe this has to do with the way they have each experienced loss. I would recommend this book to anyone, I think it will encourage you to fall in love all over again no matter the circumstances.

My Everything by Julia Barrett

This was my only non-holiday reading for the week. Once again I am blown away by Julia's talent. I am not usually a big lover of romantic suspense, but this book was so good I inhaled it. The initial premise for the story is high on coincidence, but I didn't care. It is very sexy, very intense, and the pacing of the storyline was perfect. Barrett does a great job weaving the erotic portion of the story with the suspenseful plotline. There may have been a smidge too much sex for me (quit laughing), but otherwise this story was close to perfect. Very compelling and entertaining read.

Ms. Barrett keeps her readers on their toes trying to figure out who the “bad guy” is. The suspense and emotions are non-stop in “My Everything”. The sex scenes were perfect; they weren’t too tame and not wild!

For a first time reader of Julia Barrett, I have to say I was extremely impressed by her writing method. She kept the characters and plot intriguing. This is a romantic tale that crushes the old saying, love only happens once in a lifetime, but for Ben and Grace it can happen twice.

Ben McCall, a security expert, thinks his life is over. His wife and unborn child were killed when she accompanied him on a mission abroad. He decides to disappear making everybody believe that he is dead, until his friend, Ben, the only one aware he is alive calls him because some colleagues were murdered. He resurfaces putting his life in danger. He finds Grace Adams again, a widow herself, falling in love. very predictable. No surprises and I am sure i will not remember anything about this book in two weeks' time. The only interesting thing is the idea of making believe everybody you are dead and starting a completely new life, but the treatment was very superficial.

My Everything is true to the book. To me it was well written wasn't bored and the characters really stick.

Here is a story about Ben and Grace who were supposedly lovers when they were younger, but meet up accidentally and fall in love all over again. This is based on their loves, past, trust, truth and tragedy. I just like how the story began, and ended. Worth a read.

Romantic suspense

I was hooked from the beginning. Ben's story begins the book and hooked me almost instantly. I needed to know more. Then the plot gets even better.

Grace and Ben have both loved and lost. When they reunite will they finally find their happily ever after?
