This was a pleasant surprise in my mailbox today. I had forgotten that I had placed a pre-pub order on Citypixie's recommendation way back in December. She's right. It definitely looks like something I'm interested in. Organized by region, it includes a series of essays on various farmers, chefs, organizations and artisans involved in sustainable agriculture + a cookbook with recipes organized by season. I'm a little disappointed that for Illinois the only representation is Chicago's Green City Market. Just went to a Green Schools conference today and saw lovely presentations from Angelic Organics, an organic farm and educational center based in Caledonia, IL, and a farmer from Chicago's Growing Home who is helping Chicago schools create school gardens. Maybe they'll be included in the next edition.

Very small selection of recipes at the back of the book - you should be aware of this in case you think you are getting a big fat cookbook full of recipes. The book has no dustjacket. Most of the book is a compilation of stories from the magazine, with lovely photos. Like I said, the recipe selection is small, but outstanding - I want to make just about everything.

I love the photos and stories in this beautiful book. So many of the articles in here made me want to start my own food business or farm, to become even more a part of the local and organic food scene.

great info and beautifully done book, a bit less recipes than i had anticipated. I found the larger book harder to read than the seasonal regional magazines. But the interviews and closeups were all done really well.

I learned a lot from this book. I liked that it went by region, so you knew what you were going to be learning about in that section. At the back there is a small section with recipes, which is nice.
