This was a very confusing book. First off, I didn't realize until finishing it (and saying to myself, "Huh?") that it is part of a series, a one-off apparently. But, no, it's like maybe kinda the first of a new series that began as part of an old series. Whatever. At least that sorta kinda explains why it was so confusing, disjointed. Guess you had to be there at the beginning to fully understand the characters and their relationship to each other. And, oh yeah, that understanding was not only of lead characters like Maisy and Jordana but the police officers and the bad guys (was he or wasn't he?) whether they were dead or alive, part of the story or only a side mention. I didn't rate this book with the stars because first, I'd give it one star for being so confusing and for being so poorly written (one time misspelling "stationery" as "stationary" and a typo is forgiven, twice and you need to fire your editor), and second, I'd give it possibly five stars because it is the first novel I've read that much of it is written as a podcast and/or the production of a podcast. I thought that was pretty interesting since so many people I know are addicted to listening to true crime podcasts. Yet, even with that device and the different "reporting" of investigating a crime, there were what I thought were weak points in the plotline. Example: Your assignment is to investigate the so-called suicide to see if there's more than the police realize going on. Probably if you had any skill at this (which as an investigative reporter you should at least have some basic knowledge of protocol) you would not go to the home of the "victim" and tromp all over in your shoes and touch everything with your bare hands. Seem to me, anyway. But when you determine it was a murder rather than a suicide but along the way don't resolve the huge cash deposit the victim received just before his demise ... well, you can see how that leaves the story open-ended for the reader. Apparently, that was the intention of the author. Since she gave instructions about which of her other books you should read if certain aspects of THIS book appealed to you. Nope. In the end, my decision was not a one star rating or a five star rating and not even a three star rating as a compromise. This was a chapter or three that could have been part of a larger novel or it could've been shelved until the author really knows what to do with these characters. I like to read books in a series in order but sometimes, when I download a book, I don't realize that it is not the beginning of a series; I've been known to go back and read other books IN ORDER, to see if the series as a whole appeals to me. This one, I will not bother with. And I think I knew that with the first "stationary" I ran across.

“Ding, ding, ding, stop the presses and change the front page story because the little lady is not so little in the eyes of her viewers, friends and high-powered enemies. Maisy Farley is as sweet and beautiful on the outside as she is focused, determined and confident on the inside. Steeltown Magnolia Is written so well by Melissa F Miller that you won’t want it to end. Maisy is the little engine that could as her southern charm, wit and street smarts power her over any mountain that stands in her way. Steeltown Magnolia will keep you guessing and you will find yourself rooting for Maisy at every crossroads.”

What is the Farley Files podcast?

Melissa F Miller has created a courageous Heroine in Maisey Farley, in "Steeltown Magnolia: A Maisey Farley Novel". She's a Journalist who Investigates a Story, and asks questions, to find out what really happened. To separate facts from suppositions, no matter where it leads. This lady has the kind of Journalistic Integrity, that's becoming more rare, with each passing day.

Will Maisey be able to find out whether a dead man could've possibly been a murdered, even though it's been ruled a suicide? Who are Jordana and Jenna; and how do they assist Maisey? I Highly Recommend You 📖 this Awesome, Engrossing, Mystery Thriller, to find out!

I ❤️d this 📗 so much, I 📖 it straight through. I ❤️d that main characters from the Sasha McCandless Legal Thriller series, show up in this Story too. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

After reading the last Sasha book (Independent Sources) I really wanted to read more about Maisy, so I was so excited for this one.

The story followed on from what happened to Landon Lewis, with Maisy investigating the death after it had been ruled a suicide. No one who had known him believed that was true, so Maisy used her skills and connections to investigate the case for her new podcast.

I liked all the different viewpoints, and seeing the story unravel from each side. Maisy was a likeable character, and I'd love to read more of her.

A great start to this spin-off series!

Exciting new series

This series is about Maisy Farley, ex-tv reporter. She was going to try to start a new tv station but someone suggests that she try to do a podcast about true crime. The case she gets is about a man who the police say killed himself but no one else thinks he did. This series is connected to Sasha's series and we see that Sasha and Leo had a connection with the dead man. The case and the podcast premise end up being dangerous for Maisy. I think this series will be really good. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Maisy the wonder of snow and living in Pittsburg she was still loving it.
She was a journalist, with the southern charm and wit , while getting the true facts. A payout she was to receive was being delayed, could she do a podcast it would be less start up costs, an a younger crowd.
A juicy story is what is needed.
A chance meeting, the person telling her it was murder, not suicide.
Time to get the true facts and stay alive while doing the story.
Enjoyable, readers will love .Maisy and the good flowing plot.
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Maisy Farley doesn't dilly dally! This book was fast paced and easy to read. There were no long delays where the main character made a lot of wrong decisions until she finally hit on the right one. She thought through each crisis thoroughly before taking action. I really liked that. I'm ready for the next Maisy novel! There will be another, right?

A riveting story set in da’Burg.

This riveting story takes place in Pittsburgh, PA and that was one reason why I loved it. I used to live there and it was so fun to spend time in da’Burg again, visit familiar places, speak “Pittsburghese,” and learn about some of the impressive changes that have happened in The Steel City. 💛🖤 The characters and plot are interesting and I look forward to reading additional books by this talented author.

Another great series start from one of my favorite authors and this one a spin off of Maisy Farley, introduced in the Sasha McCandless series and a lateral continuation of the storyline of Insidious Threats and the death of Landon Lewis. This one grabbed me from the start and didn’t let go until the final page. The perfect airplane book.

Quick weekend read

The plot is kludge without purpose. The characters are randomly constructed without thought. Some are ridiculous written. The writing style is entertaining, making the reading tolerable.

The story follows a former TV news reporter who is getting into podcasting! She decides to investigate the case of a man who fell from a window to his death -- was it suicide as the police have ruled? Or was it something more? (We actually never find out, because the book ends mid-story.)

In many aspects, this book is well-written. Good grammar, good storybuilding, good characters. So it's frustrating to get to the end and realize we're not even close to solving the mystery -- it's going to take who knows how many more books to wrap up the story. The author really should stick them all together in one big, fat volume, because it's a single story! Not a series.

Also, there were a lot of references to past cases and and past relationships and past history of the characters, without explanation or any real link to the current story. Quite confusing. Not unlike real life, except that's not what you expect in picking up Book #1 in a "series."

Afterwards, I investigated and found this is a spin-off from another series, so we're meant to already have read those books and know those characters and relationships and cases. Makes sense. But I'm still irritated by how confusing Steeltown Magnolia was because of the author's expectation that I'd already be familiar with her world. Aren't spin-offs supposed to be able to stand alone?

Now I feel like I *have to* purchase the rest of the series to solve the mystery and not have "wasted" my time on the first book, but I'm feeling crabby about being forced to do it.

Maisie Farley is out of work having been let go by the local TV station. While waiting for the station to come through with the funds due her for being let go she is looking for something to do. Through a series of events she is convinced to start a podcast.
Her podcast is the supposed suicide where Leo and Sasha were the first on the scene after a dinner stroll. This death was part of the final of the most recent Sasha novel. Maisie enlists a young lady from Sasha’s law office to be the podcast producer. Having decided the death was not a suicide led to them deciding to make their investigation the focus of their podcast.
This first Maisie centric by Melissa Miller lives up to the excitement of previous novels up to the exciting finish.
Hopefully we will soon see more Maisie (as well as more Sasha novels).
I recommend all of Melissa Miller’s literary works.

I have read all of Melissa Miller’s books and enjoyed them. No spoilers but I was disappointed in the ending of Steeltown Magnolia. I am not a fan of series and leaving so much unresolved is a cheap trick that I am disappointed seeing Miller employ. I had already pre ordered the next book but otherwise would have felt manipulated to do so which is not how I have felt with previous books.

Review for Steeltown Magnolia A Maisy Farley Mystery by Melissa F. Miller
This is a beautifully crafted plot that seemed to seamlessly unfold. I read this book in a few hours because I could not put it down. Maisy Farley and Jordana are both characters introduced in the Sasha McCandless novels and this story evolves from what happened a couple of books ago. Maisy got fired, she is owed a million dollars but her past employer is “playing hardball”. Naya, one of Sasha’s law partners is her lawyer says the station is “dragging their feet”. Maisy is running out of money. Jordana, who is Sasha’s intern suggests, “Why don’t you do a podcast?” The plot begins and does it unfold in a hurry with “a juicy story” arriving with Deanne Lewis, the ex wife of the deceased Landon Lewis to finalize his affairs and a meeting of Maisy with Oswald Bass and Ilsa Evans who are police officers. They suggest Maisy
look into the jumper that occurred last summer in Bakery Square since the file for the incidence is gone. They were going to use the file to refresh their memories before meeting with the wife, Deanna Lewis. They discover the file had been signed out by someone with the task force but that someone has told them to not worry about it. Later Sasha tells Maisy that “something’ll fall into your lap”.
And the something turns out to be Deanna at the creche or Nativity who Maisy helps by taking her to the William Penn Hotel’s Speakeasy lounge. Deanna reveals a money transfer from the Thor Trust International that convinces Maisy to do the podcast. The book just unfolds from there with a cast of interesting characters who are all key to furthering the story. These include Zane and Jenna Novak, Detective Tim Colchis and Bella Steptoe and the Thor Trust International. I will say no more, you will have to read it yourself to discover what really happened that summer day in Bakery Square.

Being such a big fan of legal-suspense related stories, I can’t believe I’ve ignored the many positive reviews and strong recommendations to read Melissa Miller’s books! But I’m fully onboard now and quickly going to remedy the situation. Stepping back immediately and downloading the Sasha McCandless books that relate to Maisy and the Landon Lewis storyline and then make my way through the rest as time moves on.

Miller has delivered a whopping good time as she begins the Maisy Farley Series. It was a treat to meet Maisy, a smart and feisty southern Georgia belle, now transplanted north to Pittsburgh, PA, "the Steel City." Maisy is a former weather girl, acclaimed investigative journalist and now, due to unexpected circumstances, without a job and starting her own podcast, along with Jordana, Sasha’s former legal intern, as her podcast producer.

A tangled web of shocks, secrets and murder unfolds, along with some topnotch witty banter and fun, too. Although this story interconnects with the Landon Lewis murder from the Sasha McCandless series, it’s not necessary to backtrack. The author offers enough background for this one to stand on its own. But if you’re like me, inquisitive minds want to know the whole shebang from start to finish. If so, here are the books to read from the Sashsa McCandless Series: Inevitable Discovery, Book 13, Independent Sources, Book 15 and Insidious Threats, Book 16.

The multi-faceted characters are well-drawn and spring to life on the pages. The pace is energetic, never stalling on too many technicalities as the legal battle moved forward. Includes a little bit of everything you want in a mystery minus a lot of gory details and graphic sex.

Maisy’s solo debut is a surprise-packed treat that I highly recommend to readers who enjoy creative and solid suspense-filled mysteries. Can’t wait to read more from Melissa F. Miller, a new-to-me-author!

Once again, Ms Miller has done it. Right from the start, she grabs your attention and hooks you in to her story, her characters and the mystery of figuring out what happened to Landon Lewis. Maisy is such a fun, spitfire of Southern charm. Her natural curious nature lends her the perfect skill set to get herself in and out of trouble all while getting to the bottom of this mystery. As Maisy and Jordana continued uncovering clues, I was right there with their podcast subscribers anxiously awaiting the story and conclusion. At times, I would hold my breath and internally scream at Maisy to be smart and be careful as well as cheer at her findings and her team’s brilliance and tenacity. Ultimately, I found myself torn between wanting to devour this novel and forcing myself to put it down so I could savor it…only to pick it right back up again because I couldn’t stand the wait to the conclusion. This is such a great read but may lead to a sleepless night if you are like me and can’t wait to finish it.

Was it suicide? Suffering years of grief after the death of his son, Landon Lewis was found below the window of his office, lifeless. Recently unemployed TV news anchor Maisy Farley feels his death is worth a second look for her new podcast. The facts don't add up, and Maisy is running out of time.

From the off, I was impressed by how tightly written this thriller had been crafted. While the story runs a lengthy 412 pages, not one word was unnecessary. Though I have not read any of the books in the series from which this novel sprang, I did not feel lost. Each character was properly introduced and the thrust of the story was readily apparent. The mystery itself was thrilling and snagged my attention immediately. I found myself rapidly turning pages as I couldn't wait to celebrate the end of the case with Maisy.

Though the majority of the main characters are female, this is not a cutesy read. Be prepared for violence.

I would love to read another Maisy Farley novel! Recommended.

Steeltown Magnolias is a fast, read. Melissa F. Miller fleshed the characters out enough to make them come alive for the reader. Jenna could have been stronger as a person, however. Ms. Miller's plot was also well thought out and the book was written equally well.

Maisy Farley is a character from prior books by Ms. Miller. I have not read any other books of hers so Maisy was new to me. This said, I had no problems following each character and who was who, who was bad. Yes, it was clear Landon's death took place outside of this story. But his death outside of this story held no storyline issues for me.

Steeltown Magnolia was interesting and enjoyable enough that I look forward to reading more books by Melissa F. Miller.

Having read the Sasha McCandless series I was familiar with Maisy, but this series showcases her in greater depth than we were able to discover before. It is Ms Miller's typical award-winning writing with great emotional depth, plenty of action, unexpected revelations, and plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed having Maisy and Jordana use a podcast as a vehicle for their investigation and reporting on it in "real-time". It gave the story a feeling of immediacy without having to use the first-person present point of view, which I dislike. Be prepared to put everything else on hold once you begin reading because you aren't going to want to put it down. The story just sucks you in and won't let go. I can't wait to find out what Maisy and Jordana will get themselves into next.

What an intro into this new series about Maisy long time friend of Sasha, freshly unemployed and looking for her next career which comes about through chance. I loved how we see all the players involved in Landon Lewis's death but don't know how they all come into play until things start unravelling and Maisy starts uncovering clues as well as piecing things together. You get danger, twists, bad guys, new friends, some great laughs as well as some heart stopping moments and a great read that has you hooked until the end and awaiting the next book to see what crazy situations Maisy and Jordana will get into next!!

Sacked from her news anchor job and waiting for her golden parachute payout Maisy needs something to generate some income and occupy her time. Helped by Jordana who she poached from Sasha she starts her podcast with the investigation requested by Deanna into her ex husband Landon's death which they do not believe to have been suicide. It all pans out nicely and the conclusion is well thought out, good characters with the obligatory good cops bent cops and the fall guy and evil queen. We must have our suspicions who the mister big is and will need to find out later.

A Good Start

This is the first book in a new spinoff from the Sasha McCandless series. It’s kind of rough around the edges and needs some careful editing and proofreading, but it has definite potential. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet read the McCandless book that contains Landon’s death, so I was lost at times. I assume that the book is, indeed, part of the series and that once I read it all will be made clear. If that isn’t the case, Muller needs to get busy filling in the blanks because inquiring minds want to know.

Fired for refusing to report the propaganda that the new billionaire station owner demanded of her, she walks away with a million-dollar golden parachute. Wanting to start her own independent news show Maisy gets the idea to start with a crime podcast. Little does she know that her investigation into the supposed suicide of Landon Lewis will put her into danger but also boosts her debut podcast into a viral sensation. A suspenseful and fun read.

Very enjoyable read. Maisy, an ex tv reporter is starting a pod cast with the help of friends. Her 1st program brings up a questionable suicide. And it takes off from there. There's several people, including a detective, that don't want her opening this case back up! The story is fast moving with several characters that could be suspects. I still want to know who Bella's boss is, maybe next story. Interesting and a book I would recommend.

Wow

Wow. This one word sums up the nonstop pace of this book. Steeltown Magnolia by Melissa Miller is really close to Being a classically written story with the entire tale building to a great climax.

I've read many of Melissa Miller books and I would rate this one toward the top of her entertaining stories. Melissa accomplished a great tale with no graphic violence, no foul language and no sex or sexual overtones.

I know you will enjoy reading Steeltown Magnolia.

I wish I had read the other books with this character! I was very familiar with Sasha and Leo and the twins, but perhaps I have not read the stories with Landon Lewis. I wish I had for it to make more sense to me. Even still, the story was well written at a good pace with great characters. I stayed up late to finish the story, and that hasn't happened in a while! I hope there are more Maisy podcast stories in the future!

Maisy is still waiting for her million-dollar payout from her contract from the tv station. In the mean time what is she going to do for a job? Jordana suggests she do a podcast. It wasn't long and they are looking into the supposed suicide of Landon Lewis. Just what was he involved in? Did he commit suicide or was he killed? Things aren't adding up for the ex-wife of Landon or Maisy. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
