PA-PA-PARANOJA. PA-PA-PARANOJA. DOVIĐENJA LEPA MOJA. PA-PA-PARANOJA!!!!

“Ispovest” se dobije kada se ukrsti atmosfera iz Eggersovog filma “The Lighthouse” i seting najboljih Taniguchijevih mangi o planinama. Neverovatano efektan i brz triler koji se čita u jednom dahu!!!

***I thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in return for an honest review***

what a thrill! Confession kept me on the edge! asai and ishikura are trapped besides their convictions within a cabin as the shadow of secrecy and paranoia grows. the atmosphere was suffocating and the art was brilliant. predicted it a bit but overall, i loved the concept, specifically the twist. kudos to Fukumoto!

A really good psychological horror manga

There are certain elements that guarantee a good psychological horror for me. Two of my most important criteria were executed perfectly in the manga :

1. Setting

The place the plot occurs in is perfect. The bittering cold, the isolation from everyone, the small space of the cabinet all create the perfect circumstances to make the reader squirmy.

2. Character development

The spiral into madness for both mmcs was so well done. ESPECIALLY when you consider the physical side effects on top of their mental struggles due to the harsh weather conditions.

Honestly I got actual chills reading this during the night. The only reason I took one star off was the backstory/ reasoning behind the murder which I just didn't find that satisfying. Overall absolutely recommend

Bello!

this was an unexpected fun read and i was really tense reading wondering how it'll end.

two men are stranded while climbing a mountain because of an ice storm, and a confession from one of them makes the two wary of each other. will they survive until the rescue team arrives? it really should be made into a film!

[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for an ARC of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review]

As death looms amidst a ferocious blizzard, things get awkward between hikers Ishikura and Asai, when the former admits to an old murder, just before they manage to find the shelter they were looking for. And suddenly the darkness is closing in, both literal and figurative.

This is a real mixed bag of a one-shot, but overall I quite enjoyed it. It starts with a classic scenario - I saw this exact same thing play out in a volume of In/Spectre a while back - and effectively amps up the tension.

For a story that only involves two guys and the death of a woman they both knew, it zips along at a brisk clip and doesn’t feel terribly boring. This is one of those suspense stories that knows when to pile on and it usually ratchets things up just when it might otherwise flag.

The set-up is probably the biggest hurdle, as establishing the scenario and waiting for Asai’s paranoia to really start kicking in takes a bit long, but once the snowball’s rolling and all that.

It helps that the story doesn’t play its cards close to its chest for very long either. Yes, yes, there is a certain joy in a story that is gaslighting the whole way with how innocent things are, but sometimes getting to the point is good too.

And this one barrels towards a confrontation and a conclusion that are very tense and very dark, respectively. There are no heroes in this one, putting it mildly, and while a plot twist didn’t quite land for me, the ending is savagely brutal.

The extended battle of wits and not-so-much between the two is what makes this as good as it is. The brinkmanship of two people in a life-and-death struggle to survive makes this one a real page-turner and worth the reader’s effort.

Now, story wobbles aside, some of the art here is really goofy. I love that it’s going for an older style, that part is great, but there’s one particular shot of Asai reacting that is hilariously badly drawn (I snickered, which is bad) and conveys nothing it’s supposed to. There are some other clunkers amidst the panels, but that one is egregiously bad.

3.5 stars - rounded up for being overall enjoyable for the majority of its page count and taking an old premise and making it a fun time. A good little one-shot.

Ispovest

3 1/2 stars rounded up

Summary:

Asai and Ishikura are good friends, which is how they ended up in this situation together. It was meant to be a big group of them hiking up into the mountains, but it ended up just being two of them due to a series of events.

Then the storm hit, leading Ishikura to get dangerously wounded. It’s only natural that he believed these were his final moments…leading to a deathbed confession. Both fortunately and unfortunately for him, the tides turned, and now it looks like he will survive.

Review:

Ohhhh. Confession is perfect for all the readers who love a good psychological thriller or a story with good murder/mystery vibes. It also has strong survival elements, as our main character desperately fights for a way to survive this situation.

This was a fun twist on the whole “stranged in the mountains due to a storm” trope. Instead of having the horrible event start and end on this mountain, it turns out that at least half had previously occurred…and it’s the confession that kicks everything off (again).

I liked that twist. It made for a dark setting, even if I thought the whole thing was quickly blown out of proportion. (Would they both really jump to those conclusions that quickly? Not having been in that situation, I’m far from a subject expert).

Be sure to check out Confession if you’re looking for a tense survival story.

Kokuhaku - Confession is one of the biggest surprises I could ever expect among the hidden gems Japan reserves if we search through the unpublished stories. In fact, this one-shot is part of a forgotten production of both Nobuyuki Fukumoto, a storyteller which builds up twisted psychological characters, and Kaiji Kawaguchi, specialized into warfare comics like Eagle or Zipang. In this sense, the union of a rough realistic depiction and a creepy, thrilling plot.
Confession is the story of a couple of climbers who finds themselves in the middle of a snow storm. As soon as the older of the pair obtain a bad injury on his leg, he decides to tell his colleague a terrible secret, in order to die there without regrets. However, the weather gets immediately better, and with this new cognition the two protagonists starts a mouse and cat game in which paranoia plays a fundamental role. They both thinks about that precise moment, and both are ready to do everything for surviving or making the secret survive. Confession uses its single location in the best possible way. The cabin in which the two main characters are blocked is a labyrinth of rooms and hidden passages, of lights and shadows, while the snow lashes the external zones. The ability of the two authors in making us in doubt since the start towards the destiny of our leads is awesome, and the amount of details, the emotional expressions of the faces, dirtied and cooked by the low temperature. This whole artistic achievement is possible thanks to a cinematographic vision of the whole storytelling, making me think why there isn't an adaptation of this story, with all its surprises and sudden turnings!

Confession is one of the most underestimated mangas I can think about, full of perspectives on the cinematographic potential of this media. A plot moved by remorse, with the necessity of finding peace and at the same time escaping from every form of judgement. In this way, a simple cabin becomes an arena in which surviving becomes more and more difficult. A twisted narrative makes the pair with a squared, rough and gritty amount of character designs and artistic features, with an ending more actual than ever.

FINAL VERDICT: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A huge thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, Kaiji Kawaguchi and Nobuyuki Fukumoto for providing me with an ARC of Confession in exchange for my honest review.

This psychological thriller and horror manga was the perfect read for me! From the very beginning, the story captivated me with its intense atmosphere and complex characters. It centers on two men who find themselves trapped together on a mountain, an already harrowing situation made even more gripping when one makes a shocking confession that shifts the entire dynamic between them. This revelation sets the stage for a chain of unpredictable events, weaving a narrative filled with tension and betrayal.

The pacing of the story was masterful, pulling me deeper into its web of suspense with every page. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist would catch me off guard, keeping me on edge and eagerly turning the pages. The sense of dread and uncertainty was palpable, making this manga impossible to put down.

The art plays a crucial role in elevating the storytelling. Each panel is meticulously detailed, perfectly capturing the raw emotions of the characters and the foreboding atmosphere of the mountain setting. The stark contrasts, eerie shadows, and expressive character designs work together to create a visual experience that complements the psychological depth of the story. The artwork doesn’t just illustrate the plot; it immerses the reader in the characters’ fears, desperation, and fleeting moments of hope.

What makes this manga truly stand out is its exploration of human nature under extreme circumstances. It delves into themes of trust, survival, and morality, challenging the reader to consider what they might do in a similar situation. The characters are flawed and deeply human, making their decisions and interactions all the more compelling.

This is a story that lingers long after the final page. The combination of gripping plot twists, stunning artwork, and profound psychological insight makes it a thoroughly enjoyable and unforgettable read. I’d highly recommend this manga to fans of thrillers, horror, or anyone looking for a story that pushes boundaries and leaves a lasting impression.

I really enjoyed this! I was on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and couldn't stop reading. I needed to know what was going to happen between Asai and Ishikura.

We follow Asai and Ishikura who get trapped in the middle of a snowstorm after an accident. Thinking they won't survive, Ishikura confessions a dark secret. However, the two friends are able to seek refuge in a nearby cabin. As they wait for help to arrive, Asai worries that Ishikura might do anything to keep his secret.

Such a fast paced read, great characters, and amazing artwork. Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves thriller manga/graphic novels.

A deathbed confession goes wrong and two men find themselves trapped together in a mountaintop cabin as a storm rages outside. Between the storm and an injury, the men have no choice but to wait until help can arrive, as a long-held secret eats away at their sanity. I enjoyed the intense atmosphere of the paranoid cat-and-mouse game played between characters as tensions rose and their trust in each other unraveled. Confession is a taut thriller that is easy to fly through in a single sitting.

Originally published in 1998, Featuring stunning artwork with a style reminiscent of the 1980s, the manga was a blast from the past and a treat to read. The snowy mountain setting makes it a perfect read for the winter season.

I enjoyed this manga about two men trapped during a snowstorm. The titular confession happened almost as soon as the book began, and the fallout from it ramped up quickly. But the middle chunk (everything, pretty much, but the first 10 and last 20 pages) was a little repetitive as the characters stayed very much in their own heads, figuring out what to do in the situation in which they are stuck. When the threat of violence actualized, the stakes kept getting raised in a way that kept me reading, even though I did still find the going in circles (sometimes literally, sometimes metaphorically) to be repetitive. The book has a twist ending that actually did come as a surprise. I'd be interested to see this made into a film.

Kicking my feet at how good this book is! First of all, I love the art style. The thick linework and simplistic character designs encapsulate the feeling 80-90s manga, which perfectly fits this story. The narrative itself is masterful, creating so much tension and knowing just when to break it. You learn more and more about the characters throughout and can’t be sure what to believe. My favorite horror movie is The Thing (1982) and I would put this manga right next to it in a subgenre of their own. Such a simple idea, but so thrilling and engaging throughout. Definitely just jumped up to one of my favorite manga of all time. Time will tell, but I suspect that this is one of those unforgettable stories. Absolutely loved it, highly recommended!🏔️

Wow this really was intense. Basically two mountain climbers go up this snowy hill, and one believes they will die so they admit they killed someone. Then the main character finds a cabin and they survive. But not this confession is out in the public, and the killer wants to try to cover it up but at the same time, we don't know if he's really trying to do that or the main character is panicking. It's a cat and mouse game mixed with hysterics that make it dark and entertaining. A twisted ending too. A 4 out of 5.

Who is this master at his craft whose works I haven't read.
Every chapter builds so brilliantly on top of the rest. I genuinely couldn't guess some of the places the plot went. Like I would cringe for a moment at why the author would take this way for the story and BAM, it would reward us with some brilliant moments immediately after that. All of it builds to such an amazing climax. It's genuinely brilliant.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was near perfect. I had doubts at times, but oh, it was a rollercoaster of suspense and thrills and it needs to be a movie! It has a bit of King's Misery, a bit of Poe, there's madness, there's paranoia, there's suspense and mystery!

I never know how to talk about books that shock me in a very good way. All I can say is that you have to read it!!

Lost in a blizzard, Asai realizes his life is in danger after Ishikura confesses to murder.

Nice suspense! Ishikura assumes he's in the process of dying and then they find the cabin. Now the only problem is that Asai knows his secret. This had a few twists that kept the thrill bumping along at a good pace. I do wish the exaggerated faces (which did a nice job of capturing terror) had not occasionally been pushed to outright cartoony.

This manga explains the extent to which humans go to hide their pretentiousness when exposed, it fairly starts with two friends trapped in an avalanche without a way-out, what follows next is a tale of doubts, lies, betrayal, confessions etc, which makes you think, were they really friends from start though?

It's not that I didn't like it, I just wasn't all that into the story as I thought I would be.

The art was really good but the story wasn't all that gripping, though the twist in the end was pretty cool.

Signing off,
