The fourth book in the Ghost Huntress series by Marley Gibson is titled The Counseling. I have recently read the other books and the newest one in the series continues to follow the main character Kendell as she discovers who she is as a psychic and overcomes her fears that are developed in book 3. She is also still trying to put together the puzzle pieces of who her birth parents are and how to contact blood relatives. I found myself vey intrigued with the bit of mystery surrounding her parents. A new love interest enters Kendell’s life and a promising relationship evolves throughout the book. Kendell is a very refreshing female character. She is a young independent woman that does not need a male in her life. She has healthy relationships with friends and family that is sorely lacking in most paranormal literature.

I really enjoyed the way that the book reads. The author uses texts to make the prose a bit more relatable. It isn’t used quite as much in the fourth installment and I find that I do miss it. It made the events and people more real. In addition, the writing is authentic for the genre. Gibson uses true terms for ghost hunting but does not overwhelm the reader with new vocabulary. I also like that I could have started with the fourth installment and I wouldn’t have been entirely lost. Obviously, reading the earlier books will give more insight to the story but if you just started with the fourth book you will not be lost.

Overall I give this book a 4 out of 5. I feel that the beginning went pretty slowly and was a bit too in depth for the events that were going on. I also feel that only a very small amount of time progresses in each book and that could be a problem for readers. For instance, the House of Night series has gotten tedious for me to read since so little time is covered. However, the writing is good and the characters have realistic struggles and interesting dilemmas. It is not filled with the typical teen angst and narration about how the female lead can’t live without the male lead. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in paranormal YA romance especially those that like a bit of mystery interwoven to the text.

The Counseling, book 4 of the Ghost Huntress by Marley Gibson is a fun book full of supernatural challenges and a bit of danger. Kendall Moorehead is on her way to an enlightened youth retreat in Oakbriar California to help hone her abilities. She can see and hear ghosts and has just recently learned that she is adopted. She is struggling with these abilities because her spirit guide has just passed into the light. To make that doubly a tough problem, she has also just found out the Emily, her spirit guide, was also her birth Mother. She is hoping that if she can hone her abilities she may be able to find her real father as well as her grandparents. Her best friend and fellow ghost huntress, Celia Nichols is headed off to Chicago at the same time with her dad, and has agreed to dig information up about what they have found out so far on Kendall’s real family. In the meantime the institute she will be attending in California is being run by Oliver Bates, a paranormal investigator that has his own television show and also helps the police solve cases. Kendall hopes that he will be able to help her.

When she reaches California and is headed to find her ride she trips over a guitar case, and has the occasion to meet a very rude young man. When she spots her ride she is happy to realize that she will be leaving him behind and not have to deal with his smart mouth or rudeness any further. At the Briar Rose where the camp is being held she begins her day, first meeting the owners, and then meeting the unlikely group of kids that are attending. She is rooming with Jess, a petite girl about her age that loves to surf. All in all there are six girls and six boys and each of them have come into some paranormal abilities that have put them into bad situations with their families and friends. Many of them are currently prescribed medications by the psychiatrists that they have been to, when their parents could not understand what was going on. For them this camp is necessary because they are here unable to really get their life together without being able to control their abilities.

As dinner is finished and they are all getting to know each other, the owner of the home, Chris mentions that she will need to change the music. Kendall lets her know that she will do it and as she enters the main room she trips over …… a guitar case? How pleasant, it looks like Mr. Personality is also a member of the group.

Each of the students has a story and Patrick is no different. He two hears and sees ghosts like she does, and he only recently came into his powers through a near death experience. He almost drowned while diving with his father, and now has an overwhelming fear of water. His abilities are so intense he wears gloves on his hands and keeps his eyes covered most of the time. As they work together with their leader Oliver Bates and his helpers, they get to know each of the others and their abilities as well as their fears. When Kendall finally sees Patrick for the first time without his sunglasses she realizes that not only is he someone that has been in her dreams, but that they have a strong connection.

When she is approached by the ghost of a young girl asking for her help, she finds that this same spirit has also talked to Patrick. She is lost and hoping they can help find her. When they realize that she may have been murdered they get the help of the rest of their camp as well as Oliver and his police connections to find her and to give her parents closure.

Marley Gibson’s characters are fun and full of zest. They are exuberant and very in the now. They are techno geeks, up on current trends and just like many of the kids we see all the time. Of course they all have paranormal abilities, which they are each struggling to understand. Kendall is a very smart young lady and has been hurt by both the most recent knowledge of finding her birth mother only to lose her and she is single since her boyfriend had moved to Alaska. She is out of sorts but still snappy and brave. She is very attracted to Patrick from the first, even though she really did not like his attitude.
Patrick is just picking up his life after a near death experience. He is unsure of himself and it appears to make him standoffish. He no longer feels secure in the world and is dealing with having abilities that make him even feel more out of his element. He is very attracted to Kendall and is able to communicate with her telepathically.

This is a very fun and vibrant read, where a group of kids get the opportunity of a lifetime. They learn some life lessons as well as how to take control of their abilities and form some lasting friendships. This is a wonderful YA book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for that fun and something different read for a free evening or weekend.

This book was received as a free read from Netgalley. All opinions are my own based of my reading and understanding of the information.

*sigh* I love good books, good authors, good things…and The Counseling was definitely all of those. While I would definitely recommend reading the entire series, which is what I plan to do, I think starting at the end is almost as good.

One problem that usually comes up with starting in the middle of a series is that you don’t know the characters, or their bffs, or any of their relationships, story arc, etc… But it turns out that I picked up the series in the perfect spot.

Kendall Moorehead ghost hunts with a group of her friends. But Kendall isn’t just any ghost hunter, she’s psychic. She sees and hears ghosts, and knows what they’re feeling. In The Counseling, Kendall has just gone through some major life-and-death trauma and her parents have decided to send her to a retreat in the Sierras for Spring Break, a camp for extra-special kids with psychic abilities like Kendall. And there, Kendall can get perspective and guidance from some authorities on the topic…and meet some new friends. :)

Like I said, if I was going to jump into a series, this is the perfect spot—Marley was great about giving the background for the character, but I didn’t have to worry that I was missing any innuendos, because Kendall was in a completely new place with completely new characters, and I could get to know everyone at the same time. And speaking of great timing, this is the perfect book if you’re starting to get into the Halloween spirit!

The Counseling is a fun, fast-paced read that kept me flipping the pages as fast as I could to see what was going to happen…And now that I know…I can’t wait to pick up the rest of the Ghost Huntress series to catch up on everything that’s already happened!!!!

I was gifted 48 copies of this book by a friend. I found homes for 47 of them but kept one to read. I brought it with me on my trip to Australia and New Zealand in hopes of leaving it in the Southern Hemisphere. I was surprised by what a quick and enjoyable read it was. Took me less than a day during a gathering of fruends. I will keep my eye out for more books in this series as I would enjoy reading them. I was a little surprised to find a definite Christian flavor to a paranormal book, but I guess they come in all flavors.

This book is about a young woman dealing with her paranormal experiences, with a traumatic near-death experience, and discovering she was adopted. Plus her boyfriend has moved to Alaska and "ghosted" her. She goes to California to a week long session with a famous paranormal investigator and other teenagers with similar gifts to become more comfortable with their gifts. There's a cute but troubled boy. And a restless spirit. Somewhat predictable plot but enjoyable.

The fourth book in the series started out a little slow, which is why I gave it three stars; however since the book only covers a week in time I can understand why the slow start was necessary. The story picked up in the middle and was a quick and easy read. While some things were predictable; like Kendall bumping into Patrick in the airport and then seeing him a chapter later at the retreat, the counselors being ghosts, and the beach scene where Kendall almost drowns and Patrick goes after her - but overall the story was an easy weekend indulgence!

It's been years since I last read this series and I only have 1-5. I've now ordered 6-7 (pricey because I live in Asia).

I really liked the first three books. I rated them 4 stars. So far, this was the book that I least liked in the series. Why?

What I like about The Counseling:
1. Fast-paced.
2. Dark and mysterious Patrick.

What I don't like about The Counseling:
1. Too many characters who didn't make an impact on the story.
2. Weak plot.
3. Kendall's too obsessed with Patrick.

REVIEW

What do you get when you mix a group of ghost hunting teens with a ghost out for revenge and a ghost who can’t find her body? You get a thrilling mix of scary and fun with a side of romance.

The characters in The Reason are the ones who were introduced in the first two books. There’s Kendall and her entire ghost-hunting team. Kendall has become more in touch with her abilities and she puts them to good use to solve a ghostly mystery. She also uncovers some secrets from her own past that are very surprising.

In The Counseling, Kendall takes a break from the Southern town of Radisson and heads out to sunny California. She meets an entirely new group of teens at a retreat for ghost hunters with special abilities. There are all sorts of abilities like aura reading, seeing ghosts, and feeling the emotions of others.

Patrick joins the story in The Counseling. He is new to his abilities, and he starts out very annoying. I couldn’t wait to see if he could win over Kendall’s heart. Another favorite character was Kendall’s roommate, Jess. She was an aura-reading surfer with a bubbly personality.

While I enjoyed the first two books in this series, I LOVED books three and four. Maybe it was that Kendall was becoming more proficient with her powers, or maybe it was the new setting and characters. No matter – I recommend this series to all those ghost hunting fans out there.

Watch for the story to continue in The Discovery, coming out in May, 2011. You can also see my review of books one and two HERE.

After Kendall's brush with death during her last ghost hunting mission, she's taking a break. She's not sure she wants to continue using her gifts. Kendall just might be done with ghosts.

Her parents send her to a retreat in California for teens just like her. Kendall isn't sure about the retreat, but she's happy to have time to think about herself and what she wants from the future.

She soon meets other teens who have similar abilities, all in a place where they can talk about their experiences. Kendall feels drawn to one boy in particular. At first, Patrick seems snarky, but there's more to him than meets the eye. Soon, he and Kendall have a connection between them, but he's traumatized from a past experience.

Can he trust her enough to open up to her? Will Kendall find peace with her past and be able to move forward?

The fourth book in the GHOST HUNTRESS series creates a cast of new characters to enjoy while delving into Kendall's feelings. However, dealing with ghosts doesn't take a back seat. While learning how to focus her energies and move past recent traumas, Kendall still connects with a spirit. While this spirit isn't dangerous, the circumstances surrounding her death are shrouded in mystery.

After dealing with a little heartbreak in the last installment, a new love interest appears. THE COUNSELING is a great chapter in this fresh and unique series.

This was a fun book to read! The change of scenery was nice (no offense to Radisson, but if I had to read about another vengeful Civil War ghost, I might have lost it. I also realize that I will have to read about another vengeful Civil War ghost in the next book, but we'll just ignore that). I'm glad Kendall isn't a perfect, dedicated heroine who recovers from trauma way too quickly. The new characters here also had a lot of potential, but their development was lacking, which made me sad. Even if I will probably never get to read about them again, I still liked the overall atmosphere the retreat was able to bring.
I'm still really confused about romance in this series. It doesn't matter how many times you say, "I'm not here to flirt" if you continue to flirt anyways. The relationship between Kendall and Patrick progressed really quickly as well. I felt like there was almost no development between them being annoyed with each other and them liking each other. I think Patrick is a much better guy than Jason though, so I'll let it slide. I didn't like the forced pairings of the rest of the characters. It seemed unnecessary.

Unlike the previous books in the series, Marley Gibson took a different route. Ghost Huntress: The Counseling doesn't really focus on one of Kendall's cases but more on Kendall herself and the growing she sought. Though most of the main characters aren't featured in this installation, you quickly fall the new characters.

You'll mourn alongside Kendall as she deals with the loss of so many people in her life and joy in the additions she makes as well. More questions about her family, her biological family, are answered and more adventures are outlined for what lies ahead for Kendall and her gang. And one large surprise is awaiting you at the end of the novel.

Marley Gibson did a phenomenal job with this novels, not only as a story itself but also as a lead in to the next book: Ghost Huntress: The Discovery.

The Counseling is a great book I must say because as the story goes she matures but stays the same (but I actually read this book before the first) I love it when the author gave Kendall another guy in her life in this book even her heart was recently broken by Jason, you may find it that they may be rushing Kendall but I think it was good for her to meet Patrick because her heart healed and she finally figured out who Hersheys-Eyes is.. :)

Book 4. Maybe it's a YA thing but the brand name name-dropping that goes on in this series is really starting to bug me. The story was OK, it's as if the Ghost Whisperer was a teen and she goes to church. They are great, one-day reads and teens would like it just fine. Personally I'm getting tired of the series.

Maybe I am just jaded, but the only surprise was how the poor ghost (Hailey) was made. I did enjoy that Kendall - and others at her posh retreat - are all very much haunted by ghosts who just want closure of some sort or other.

As for Patrick - all I can say to Kendall is - fickle much? She just lost her first boyfriend, first love, and then jumps into another relationship.

I love this series. The kids aren't dealing with should I or shouldn't I have sex. They're dealing with manifesting powers they're having difficulty adjusting too. Marley does a great job of transitioning between each book. I look forward to the next one; book five.
