A U.K. music journalist critically appraises the work of Van Morrison from his days with the Belfast band Them up to 1982's "Beautiful Vision," with an epilogue that briefly treats its follow-up, "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart." Rogan consistently debunks the notion of Morrison as "poet," suggesting he throws references to Coleridge, Yeats, and John Donne (among others) into his music just to further the mythology that has surrounded him since the "Astral Weeks" album in 1968. Rogan spends far too much time detailing Morrison's frequent run-ins with media - all-too true, but how many times can one say the same thing about Morrison stomping off from a session with a Rolling Stone or New Musical Express writer?

An interesting if sometimes tiring account of a portion of Morrison's enigmatic career as singer-songwriter. One can only hope that at some point, Morrison will offer his own memoirs. I won't hold my breath for that, however....
