“Abrams’ initial release is a beautifully designed package, a glossy hardcover in a glossier slipcover, as bright and colorful as a grab-bag bin in a candy-store.” —The Onion AV Club
From Publishers Weekly Two classic animated series are brought together in a comic that offers many surprises, including how well it all works when transported to a new medium. Although both sources are the creation of cartoonist Matt Groening, the broadcast runs of each series referred to the other as works of fiction within their own universes, perhaps seeking to avoid the temptation of an attention grabbing crossover. And yet somehow this assemblage ably accomplishes just such a task while remaining faithful to the source materials. When Futurama's crew from the Planet Express delivery service become trapped in the fictional world of a Simpsons comic book, they must escape from Springfield. But shortly afterward they open a rift that brings the Simpsons characters into the Planet Express world, where the fictional characters must be rescued and returned to the pages of their comic book. Boothby's writing excels at letting each universe and the characters in them maintain their subtly distinct identities even when they blend. The overarching story for the book is designed to easily allow opportunities for affectionate references to comics, to science fiction, and to notable works of fiction. While the Simpsons comics included in the collection are not as strong, the crossover story takes what could have been a simple throwaway gag and instead crafts a funny, intricately detailed story. This one definitely wasn’t bad, but I certainly wouldn’t say it was good. This was just okay. The stories were entertaining and the Easter eggs were fun.
Ah "The Simpsons", not only is it the longest running animated show on television but also one of the longest running prime time series of all time with 26 seasons (As of this writing) and counting. But what many don't know is that series creator Matt Groening also did another show on Comedy Central and that show was "Futurama". Futurama became a animated tv hit winning 21 awards and even three films over the shows 9 season lifespan. But now that two of Matt's creations have come together for an epic crossover, will this be fan service to both fans of the Simpsons and Futurama? Or will this become as bad of a crossover like the time the Simpsons crossover with American Idol? Lets find out. Now for those of you who watch recent simpsons you may be saying "Didn't the simpsons already do a crossover with Futurama?" Well you'd be correct. In season 26 of the simpsons they did "Simpsorama" witch was of course, a crossover with futurama BUT.. Crossover crisis came out 5 years before the episode. Anyways, back to the book. The Planet Express crew, consisting of our odd heroes Fry, Leela, Bender, Amy, The Professor, Nibbler, Hermes, Scruffy, and the lovable Dr. Zoidberg. Have just finished a delivery and have found some old Simpsons Comics from 1993 (the actual year the first issue was released) but then are magicaly transported into the town of Springfield! Now stuck in the comic world, the Planet Express crew shortly soon makes friends with the Simpsons family. But now the Planet Express Crew must find a way back to their home of New New York, 3001. But that's not all folks! This is a two parter with the second part of story doing the old switcharo with the characters from The Simpsons being transported into the world of Futurama. Now the balance between both universes are on the brige of doom! Now with a plot like that it sounds like this book would cash and burn faster than you can say "D'oh!". But it manages to make it work with that old bit of simpson and futurama charm and of course a ton of references to both show wether it's background characters, quotes, and even Matt Groening's comic "My life in Hell". Over all, The Simpsons/Futurama crossover crisis gets 4/5 rating with lovable characters, a plot that's well executed plot, and a delight for fans of both shows.
What it's about: This crossover posits that Futurama is the "real world" and The Simpsons is just a cartoon. As part of their evil plot, the evil brains featured in in the Futurama TV series try to send the Planet Express crew into literature - where they accidentally land in a Simpsons comic book. Hijinks ensue, which eventually threaten New New York with complete destruction if the Simpsons don't work with the Planet Express team to overcome the situation.
What I thought: There were some very fun moments throughout this graphic novel that hearken back to classic episodes of each of the TV shows.
Why I rated it like I did: Overall, the joke density was a bit too low, and the targets a little too random, for my tastes. The book never quite managed to capture the feeling of an episode of either show (or at least, not a good one).
Took a break from Tolkien to read this. A crossover of two of the greatest shows ever, a few extra Simpsons stories, a reprint of Simpsons #1, a gallery of art, and all in a slick package? Yes please.
This comic book serial contains the illustrated adventures of two of Matt Groening’s most well-known creations when their worlds collide. When the crew of Planet Express complete a delivery of comic books to a nerd planet, they are caught in a surprise attack by evil brain spawn. In order to escape, Fry, Leela, and Bender, with the help of Nibbler, find refuge in a Simpsons comic book where they become trapped. The Planet Express crew must work with the citizens of Springfield to escape before the Simpsons comic is forever encased in a protective diamond shell.
This collection also contains two side stories. One involving Lisa’s cat, Snowball II, becoming mayor and the other with Chief Wiggum going on a chili-induced shooting spree.
The expanded edition also contains rough sketches and special artwork from various comic book artists.
The serial was funny and contained many references to characters and jokes from both series. Perfect for fans of both shows.
A hilarious clash of Matt Groening's most recognizable creations, Crossover Crisis sees The Simpsons and Futurama take a wild ride that is as clever as it's tongue-in-cheek (including the bondings and clashes between "twins"). Although these adventures are crammed with references to pop culture and jokes about scifi tropes, perhaps it's most daring trick is to bring the "fictional" Simpsons characters into the "real" Futurama world. And things gets even more complicated (and hilarious) when characters from classic literary works (which are "fictional" for both the Simpsons and the Planet Express crew) become involved. Of course, as in both TV series, humor is the key element and the story never takes itself too serioulsy (thankfully!).
While it's fun to see the Simpsons and Futurama characters interacting with the usual humor of each, the jokes fell a bit flat at times, or felt too simple for my tastes. That said, the packaging of this collection is EXCELLENT, with a nice hardcover binding and case, plus plethora of alternate covers, bonus artwork, pencil sketches, and a reprinting of Simpsons Comics #1 (where the jokes feel a bit fresher!). A nice shelf item at the very least!
Excellent read of a bonkers story that brings the Simpsons and Futurama characters together. It starts off with Snowball II running for mayor, continues with Fry & co being transported into the world of a Simpsons comic Fry is reading. Simpsons comics are great for not taking themselves seriously, for being harmless entertainment. The book itself is a lovely quality thing, hardback with a slip case, clear vibrant images. Also liked the intro from Matt Groening.
Pretty fun crossover story involving the Futurama crew meeting The Simpsons. It’s fun watching the characters of both shows interact with their counterparts, some too obvious to ignore (Homer & Bender, Fry & Bart, Leela & Lisa, Farnsworth & Frink) and some pairings you might not think of right away (Hermes & Smithers, Maggie & Nibbler). Nice read for any fan of both shows
This collects all the crossover stories. As a fan of both The Simpsons and Futurama, this was an enjoyable read and was interesting to see what they could do when these characters came together. A must read for fans of both shows.
Futurama and The Simpsons are two of my favourite TV shows of all time and this crossover was an entertaining read. It's just one of those comic books you would read once and then just forget about.
Captures both the look & humor of both series very well. Full of jokes not only worth of both, but plenty of loving digs and deep cuts at the comic book medium itself. A terribly fun read I would recommend to anyone who has ever enjoyed either show at some point during their runs.
