When Vee and her father cross the Caus Valley, they feel as if they have entered another world. They find Maggot, girl of the night; Clem with his secret struggles, and a mysterious boy in black poised on a clifftop claiming to bring a message from another place, perhaps another time.
rather a strange take on the standard spirits of British antiquity walking among the living to fend off unwanted modernity; the addition of a 16th century highway man/boy who has appeared in the present on a motorcycle in quite corporeal form, for instance, was a first for me. Didn't blow me away with numinous-ness, but a good read.
