Cupid's arrow finds even the most lovelorn guys, and that's never been more fun than in the Shot Through the Heart Taste Test. In Better than Cupcakes, by Lenore Black, Mitch thinks there has to be a better way to spend Valentine's Day than working, even if he does like his co-worker, Augie. Everyone thinks Augie is a little odd, but Mitch thinks Augie might be far better than a cupcake. In Cupid Knows, by DC Juris, Jack has been dreaming about Alan ever since they met at a game. Can he convince Alan to take a chance on a Valentine's Day meeting when Alan has something to hide? Finally, in Dead Shot, by JL Merrow, a chance meeting brought about by a stray arrow brings Peter and Edward together, but will their pasts come between them before they even get started?
DAMN YOU GR! I wrote a really good review of this and stupid GR stalled out and it's GONE! I'm too tired to do it again tonight, but this teaches me once again to just do things in Work and cut and paste!
Alright, I’m trying this AGAIN.
This is a cute little anthology of three stories loosely based on Valentine’s Day/Cupid.
The first, Better than Cupcakes, by Lenore Black is about two guys, Mitch and Augie, working security on Valentine’s Day in Terre Haute, IN. Now I live in Indiana and sorry to the inhabitants of Terre Haute, but it pretty much is the armpit of the world (at least it was in 1978). These guys are having a lousy V Day and so Mitch asks Augie to come over for a drink so they won’t have to be alone or with someone who hates them. They talk about their worst Valentine’s days and I have to say, some of these stories were pretty awful – in a comedic way. There are some really funny lines in this story and I think one of my favorites is the exchange below when Mitch and Augie adjourn to Mitch’s bedroom.
Um,” he stammered. “Sorry, it's such a mess.” “I live in my mother's basement. She has twelve cats and collects unicorn figurines. This is kind of an improvement.”
Like I said, it’s a very cute story!
The second story is Cupid Knows by D.C. Juris. This is the first of three stories about Alan and Jack. Jack and Alan have “met” once before – at a football playoff game – where they shared a victory moment without even exchanging names. Jack sees Alan in the bank he stops - strung with Cupids and the sign “Cupid knows” - and recognizes him. It’s been three years and he still remembers Alan. So Jack stops him and introduces himself. They end up going to lunch and the movies and dinner, etc. Anyway, it’s a “meet cute” story that obviously has a happy ending, since there are two more stories about them. I wouldn’t recommend reading the stories out of sequence as I did. Read this story first, then On Solid Ground and then The Best Kind of Prize. I foolishly read The Best Kind of Prize first not knowing there were the other two stories. It is much better in context.
Finally, the last story is Dead Shot by J.L. Merrow. It’s another meet cute story where two young guys meet in a park when the nephew of one of them, Ben, shoots the other one, Edward, in the ass with an arrow. Kevin is a precocious kid who pretty much blurts out whatever is on his mind, outing his uncle immediately to Edward. Luckily is seems that maybe Edward is not so sad when he finds out that Ben “likes to kiss blokes” and gives Ben his phone number and they agree to meet later. There are some interesting turns to the pasts of both Ben and Edward, but they have a lovely date and maybe something more.
If you’re in the mood for a light, cute, fun read of several enjoyable stories, than this is the book for you!
Better than Cupcakes by Lenore Black - Mitch is working his boring security job with colleague Augie. Augie's a bit of a weird duck, no one wants to work with him but Mitch doesn't mind. On V-day after Augie says something flattering Mitch starts to think about him 'that way' and invites him over for a drink after work. After sharing some of their more disastrous V-days along with some tequila shots they end up in bed. This is just a very nice story of two guys, neither of whom is rich and perfect realizing maybe there's a future.
Cupid Knows by DJ Juris - This is the story of how the guys in The Best Kind of Prize met. Jack always remembered a guy he'd hugged spontaneously when their team won 3 years ago. On V-day he sees him in the bank and reintroduces himself. Before he knows it they've gone out for lunch and to a horror movie marathon and then back to Alan's place for dinner. Alan is perfect, they like the same thing and seem perfectly matched, however when it's time to get nekkid Allan admits he was badly burned in a fire and expects to be rejected for his scars. There is apparently another book that falls in between this one and the Christmas story which has not yet been published which will hopefully explain how they go from first night together to living together established couple.
Dead Shot by JL Merrow - Okay, this one isn't V-Day. Peter takes his 10 year old nephew to the park to give his mother a break as he's a handful. He makes him an impromptu bow and arrow and the kid shoots a guy in the butt. Ooops. However Edward is very gracious and even ends up going for a drink with them. Peter's nephew has no qualms about asking if Edward likes to kiss boys and informing him that Peter is single. They make a date for that night, however they both have some confessions to make before the night is over. The kid was quite amusing and I just thank the stars everyday I don't have an ADHD kid. Exhausting. It's a cute story.
Three sweet and sexy stories from three talented authors. Okay, there are no big surprises in these tales, which is why I held off the five star rating, but they were all beautifully crafted m/m erotic romances, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them.
A Recommended Read! Ms. Black, Mr. Juris and Ms. Merrow are talented writers who can scale a story down to just a few pages without sacrificing plot or character development. To view this review in its entirety, please visit http://www.blackravensreviews.com/?p=...
I bought this so I could read how Juris's characters Jack and Alan met and the story is so sweet and hot! You can tell its an earlier work by Juris because there isnt as much detail, but still great!
