Hard-working NYPD cop Noah Tobin didn’t even want to go on vacation. But it’s been a tough eighteen months since the death of his lover, so he’s determined to make the most of it. On his first night in sunny Florida, a chance encounter with a handsome man in a bar bathroom jumpstarts something in Noah that’s been dormant for all those months. Then the man disappears.
Noah’s vacation is thrown into upheaval because he can’t just let it go when he learns that the mysterious man who turned his life upside down went missing. He volunteers to help with the manhunt for his mystery man, a wealthy restaurateur named Harrison Knowles. But finding Harry is only the beginning of Noah's hot pursuit.
Kate McMurray writes smart romantic fiction. She likes creating stories that are brainy, funny, and of course sexy, with regular guy characters and urban sensibilities. She advocates for romance stories by and for everyone. When she’s not writing, she edits textbooks, watches baseball, plays violin, crafts things out of yarn, and wears a lot of cute dresses. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, with a bossy cat and too many books.
When Noah Tobin's lover is killed by a man out gunning for Noah he's left with the memories of his love and a thirst for justice. Eighteen long months later the NYPD Detective is in the courtroom to witness his lover's killer brought to justice. After months of hard work it's a satisfying yet hollow victory.
Knowing how stressed Noah has been during the past eighteen months his lieutenant places him on paid leave and offers him the use of a time share in Tampa, Florida. With no choice in the matter Noah accepts and soon finds himself in sunny Florida. On his first night he decides to visit a gay bar, something which he rarely did back home in New York for fear of being outed. At the bar Noah meets a sexy man named Harry. After sharing a couple of drinks they spend some time in the bar's bathroom before parting ways.
The next day Noah sees Harry's picture on TV. It turns out that Harry is Harrison Knowles, a local businessman who's now missing. Figuring that he's one of the last people to see him before his disappearance Noah contacts the Tampa Police Department. After sharing more information about himself than he ever wanted to Noah finds himself helping Detective Debra Ruiz in the investigation.
When Harry manages to escape his captors, Detective Ruiz, Noah and Harry work together to figure out who kidnapped Harry and why. As the men spend time together they form a tentative friendship and even though Noah wants to maintain distance between them, they soon become lovers again. As he works to figure out who's after Harry, Noah also has to deal with coming to terms with his past and his ever deepening feelings for Harry.
Noah and Harry, who at first appeared so different, one a hard working, reserved police detective and the other a laid back, fun loving bar owner, were really nicely written and I enjoyed the development of their relationship. The sex scenes in the story, beginning with their first encounter in the bar's bathroom, are very hot but don't overwhelm the story. We are also shown some sweet and tender moments between Noah and Harry and these help to show a softer more vulnerable side to Noah and at the same time a mature, caring side to Harry. There are also some nice secondary characters in this story with Detective Ruiz being the most interesting one. I liked the fact that she is portrayed as a strong, intelligent and capable police detective who also happens to be a woman.
I did have a slight reservation with the story and that is that I found it strange that Noah and Detective Ruiz seemingly didn't have a problem with some of the activities that went on in Harry's bar and his involvement in them. It seemed out of character for the two police detectives to act that way. I would have expected it to be a bigger issue but other than that I really enjoyed this story.
Overall I found In Hot Pursuit to be a well written and fast paced story that grabbed my attention and kept it from beginning to end. There is plenty of action in the story as the men deal with kidnappers, shooters and not one but two bad guys. I liked Noah and Harry, enjoyed the development of their relationship and when I finished the book I was happy to have read it. This is the first book I've read by this author and look forward to reading more in the future.
3.5 stars I enjoyed two of more recent stories by Ms. McMurray, so I decided to go back and read her first. This is a decent story ... for something with a bit mystery/thriller flair in it, there are more coincidences than actual investigation. However, the two protagonists -- the burned out cop Noah Tobin and the restaurant/club owners Harrison "Hary" Knowles are both appealing. Since this story is from Noah's 1st person POV, unfortunately, Harry hasn't been fully developed in my eyes. I do like him when he interacts with Noah ...
The bad guys and the reason for Harry's kidnapping are a bit blurry for me. It's actually forgettable after I finish it. The ending is not an actual HEA but a very realistic take on the two of them, especially with the kind of decision that Noah takes regarding his gay status and his police career.
In Hot Pursuit is a decent fluff read with some hot sex, a splash of mystery, definite eye candy, and a happy for now romance between interesting characters. The story drags in the middle yet is mostly a quick read with a lot of sex. This is the kind of book that’s great for a beach read yet you’re likely forget it as soon as it’s done. The ending is good for the characters and fitting yet leaves room for more if the author chooses to revisit these two. I didn’t mind reading this but it’s not one I’d read again so I’d recommend it for readers looking for something light, easy, and empty.
Noah Tobin is struggling to resume his life a year and a half after his partner was tragically shot. As a NYPD cop, Noah’s deeply in the closet and spent almost all his time ensuring the man responsible was put behind bars. Now Noah is sent on a forced vacation to relax yet a one night stand with the sexy Harry turns into a complicated mystery and Noah is quickly in over his head emotionally. Noah decides to help figure out who’s trying to kill Harry but their sexual chemistry just won’t stop.
The plot is kind of loose and relies on a lot of coincidences. This isn’t necessarily bad here yet does require the reader to just go with where the story leads. Noah happens to be a cop on forced vacation that happens to have a one night stand – which he never does – and Noah happens to see the news showing that guy is now missing. Since Noah is a missing person’s cop, he can’t stop himself from getting involved. Since the cops are perpetually short handed, they eagerly take Noah up on his offer of help. From there, the mystery evolves into a complicated drug scandal with distant king pens that aren’t really important or related. The focus of the story is really Noah and Harry’s relationship as they move from hot sex to love. The mystery aspect is not entirely throw away but not that well developed and takes several leaps to keep the action and pace moving. Again not horribly bad but you have to be willing to ignore the problems.
The characters are decent with Harry as an older playboy millionaire, rumored to screw any cute boy in his path, but also getting involved in this complicated drug trafficking problem. The fact that Harry has a quickie with Noah in a gay bar is pretty in character for the man, just as his taking advantage of Noah’s bodyguard protection is. Unfortunately beyond the sexy and wealthy playboy image, there is not much to Harry. He seems to fall in love with Noah but the basis for this is difficult to pinpoint. Harry clearly sympathizes with Noah’s struggle to get past his dead lover but Harry seems to alternate between being the perfect rich boyfriend and kind of sleazy club owner. The juxtaposition gives an uncomfortable dichotomy that doesn’t entirely work.
Noah is better as a workaholic cop struggling to get past his grief for his dead partner. The story plays on this well known stereotype but throws into the mix that Noah is a pretty determined bottom of the pair. He’s deeply in the closet at home but seems very at ease telling the Florida cops he’s gay. He gets involved with Harry pretty quickly, which helps since if Noah had refused to have sex for too long the book definitely would have gotten boring quick, but again you kind of just have to go with the few leaps it takes. Noah’s a classic character in a lot of ways and the story relies on his emotional development to carry the romance. Once he’s over his dead partner, he can love again and falls for Harry’s kindness in the face of his grief. It makes sense and is decent, yet nothing especially moving or intense, which keeps with the theme and tone of the story.
The writing is ok but the descriptive quality is lacking. The vibrant south Florida atmosphere never really comes alive and the contrast to the cold, dreary New York is never solidly translated. There are hints of the culture and vacation vibe but nothing that stands out and gives the story a unique flavor. There are also random characters that move in and out of scenes for no real reason, which is distracting and slows the story’s main focus. Instead the light treatment of the setting extends to all aspects of the plot and characters, making the story easy to read fluff. Not bad but not memorable. So if you’re looking for a quick, easy story set in Florida check this out.
This started well but got boring rather fast. Even Harry's character, the stranger Noah has the brief encounter with, fell apart and in the end I just didn't care about the story or the characters.
It wasn't bad, hence the three stars for what I read - which is more than half the story - but it's just one of those books that didn't do it for me.
Noah, a closeted NYC cop is on the verge of burnout. His partner of 6 years was murdered by a guy coming after him and he's been working non-stop on the case for over a year, had a fall-out with his partner's parents and life sucks. His boss sends him on a mandatory 2 weeks vacation to his time-share in Tampa. The first night he hits a gay bar and has sex in the bathroom with Harry. When Harry is on the news as missing and not just a random guy but a prominent gay business man, Noah feels compelled to tell the police what he knows and soon gets sucked into the investigation in a budget strapped Tampa. Harry manages to escape his kidnappers but they then have to figure out who it was and why as he hides out in Noah's hotel. I quite enjoyed this and it was interesting how all this craziness finally triggered Noah to deal with the death of his partner which he hadn't really and to admit that he had to move on. He felt very attached to Harry very quickly and maybe it was too fast but I liked how it ended with them taking time to get to know each other and dealing with the long-distance issue. I thought the kidnappers motive was whack but I guess that's why they are called crazy person. I really liked Ruiz, the Tampa detective who "recruited" Noah. She was tough but sensible. So I would recommend this as a good police drama with some hot smexin' tossed in. :-)
3.5 stars. I liked it more than I expected. The writing is good, but could use some speeding up. I thought the two characters were well drawn, even though sometimes the emotions and inner thoughts are a bit too "written out loud", could be due to the first person POV, but sometimes it's better to keep the readers guessing, or give a unreliable first person POV.
The relationship grows slowly - even though they had sex in the bathroom the first time and fall in love within a week - but the way the story progresses, it's not a "love at first sight" kind of story. They get to know each other before they give out their hearts. The "thriller" part is well plotted, however, the action/danger scenes design is slightly repetitive, but it doesn't really hurt the story.
I definitely look forward to more of this writer's future works.
Noah is a NY detective on vacation in Tampa, FL. He's not out; his lover was killed a year and a half ago. He runs into Harry in a gay bar, where they have bathroom sex. And Noah's broken soul starts to wake up. Harry is kidnapped, but escapes, and Noah is drafted into helping the police by guarding Harry. All sorts of things ensue, including drug deals and murder and kidnapping attempts and getting shot at. Harry never seemed to act as I expected, which was fun. Watching Noah come out of his personal hell was good, too.
This is a lovely story that has it all ... love, tragedy, mystery & smex ... what more can you ask for? ... I loved the dichotomy of the big bad cop being the more submissive lover & the more flamboyant character being the top ... this book is a fast-paced, easy read which entertains the reader without being too demanding ... light on the angst & not too heavy on the erotica.
I liked this book, it had a good plot with the kidnapping of Harry and the romance was realistic and believable.
However I wasn't convinced by the HEA, Harry is an out and proud playboy and Noah is still not out at work. I just couldn't believe they would work long and there doesn't seem to be a sequel.
If I'm correct, this book is Kate McMurray's first published novel. At least, from her Goodreads info and a quick look. It does list her short "In December My Heart's Full of Spring" as being released first but, as it is available now for free, I'm not sure if it was ever published or not. Anyway, the whole reason for that is that I always find it rather interesting to go back and read an author's first published book when they're more well established. Sometimes you find that you hate it and you don't really understand how an author ever turned their writing around, and sometimes you find that the quality was always there. I think I found this somewhere in between, which is the best place for it now in retrospect, if you ask me. It means that at least in my opinion, Kate's writing has gotten better and her stories more interesting and dynamic with practice, showing growth and not a plateau in talent.
So, naturally, that means that while I liked this book and found it an engaging read it didn't really wow me. But, in knowing that I was going back to read an author's first book, an author I find myself quite fond of, an interesting thing happened. I biased my own expectations and ended up liking the book more than I thought I would. It's a bit like when I finally ended up watching the Sixth Sense and thought, huh? I had heard too many praises. Only the opposite was what happened here. And that's a good thing to happen for me, as the reader :)
In part, this is a mystery and a contemporary romance, those two things here being somewhat different. The framework of the story is wrapped up in the mystery, how just after NYPD cop Noah meets a cute guy named Harry in a bar while on vacation in Florida, he sees on the news that Harry has gone missing and is pulled into the investigation as the last man who saw him. But the filling in between that framework is much like a contemporary romance. When Harry comes stumbling out of the forest beat up and running from his captors, the two are reintroduced and Noah is set to bodyguard duty until they can figure out just who was wanting to kill Harry and why. That's the real meat of the story.
And honestly, I found myself wishing that there were a bit more synergy between those two elements. The story easily moves between action, with the two dodging a hail of bullets to quiet downtime in their safe room at a resort getting to know each other and Noah slowly opening up about his past traumas. The problem for me was that at times these two things seemed to get a bit out of proportion, with those moments together taking precedent and leaving the mystery behind to pick up later. And the problem there is that the story, at times, seemed to lose momentum.
In all, this was a really fun book to read. It's mostly light and easy to read, but the action kicks it up a notch to make it more exciting. And it's easily satisfying, ending in a solid, feel-good HEA. It's not a bad book to take with you on vacation, which I suppose is apropos ;) And at the very least, if you find yourself a fan of Kate McMurray and having not yet read this book, then it's always interesting to go back and see where an author started.
synopsis: noah is a cop and a closeted one at that. when his lover is killed one night by a man who came seeking noah, noah can't show his grief, but he can work. a year and a half later, noah's boss insists that he needs time off and offers him the use of his timeshare in florida. noah takes him up on it, and since he's not in his home town, decides to go to a gay bar. once there, he has sex in the bathroom with someone who pushed his buttons. the next morning, noah finds out that his one night stand is a missing person, and offers his services to the local police. when harry turns up a couple of days later, the detective on the case decides to let harry stay with noah for safe keeping. trying to figure out who is after harry and trying to keep his distance doesn't work for noah.
what i liked: that noah actually got to grieve. i liked that harry just was harry and that that was enough for noah. i also liked that when noah came back to life after his first night with harry, he noticed the men around him; didn't just have tunnel vision for his one night stand.
what i didn't like: i find it hard to believe that the police force in a town would allow a cop from another state to have so much information about a case. also, things happened really quickly for harry and noah.
Another book that I truly enjoyed. I've read this book like it was a movie. All the action and sort of mystery kept me truly engaged throughout the book. I really liked Noah and Harry together. Their conversations are really fun to read, especially with Noah's sense of humor. Even though they fell in love really fast, it didn't feel like that for me. I guess it's because there was so much happening during the few days that they were together, that I didn't even stop to think about whether or not that was even possible. I'm really glad they got their HEA, they deserve it xD
This falls squarely into the category of books I can't objectively review because I know the author, which is probably a good thing since I kind of suck at reviews. For what it's worth, I'd recommend this author to any of my friends who read slash.
But this does remind me of why arithmetic is sometimes wrong. One hot man times one hot man is not one hot man, no matter how many times 1x1=1 was drilled into our heads.
I seem to be encountering a lot of dead former lover stories now, although this one isn't a ghost story.
The timing is very well conceived, I think. Namely, where the story began.
I liked the character dynamics, and I will say that I was happy that
The rest of it was solid. Not exactly quite spectacular or particularly dazzling, but solid. I liked it and had no immense qualms about it, so I'm going to give it that additional star.
Noah an cop is left heartbroken when his partner of 6 years past away due to things. After the incident that happened his boss suggested take leave on vacation . 18 months past still grieving in his own way, he meets harry in all places they hook up in the bathroom. after that things get heated up with kidnapping and what it all means and getting to know harry. Pretty much an action packed with some mystery and hot moments.
I sometimes have trouble with this kind of plot so I didn't get my hopes up and went in with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised to actually enjoy the story.
There were a few twists and turns that kept my interest and even the resolution to the relationship part surprised me a bit as it was not the way my mind worked. I'd did however find the epilogue a bit bland even if it was a sweet conclusion.
I enjoyed this mystery once I could do a little suspension of reality to explain a NY cop (Noah) was acting as an agent for the Florida police just because he was the last person to see Henry before he was kidnapped. Both Noah and Henry were likable men and I liked them together.
There were a few albatross characters thrown in to keep you on your toes, but I found the mystery a little convoluted at the end.
I wish I had given more credence to the reviews I read before buying this book. It was fine, but it really did drag towards the end. I thought I would enjoy it more. The writing was good enough, but I wasn't really engaged after the first third. And I wasn't enamored with Harry. The more I think about the book the less satisfied I am with it.
If I judge by my final reaction to this book, it would be two stars. I'm giving it three because there was a lot of promise in the beginning. Noah's grief was palpable, and the initial chemistry hot. Unfortunately, Harry's characterization remained shallow, and the fact that they were stuck in Noah's hotel while a lot of action happened around them meant the pace really dragged for the last half.

Read this entirely because I think it's awesome a gay erotic thriller stars a character with my name. Made even more surreal by the 1st-person narrative. I figured this would be a silly beach read, but I actually found myself enjoying it and feeling for the main character. Not a perfect book, and perhaps not even very literary. But fun and surprisingly emotional.
Good m/m romantic suspense about a closeted NYPD cop, whose boyfriend was killed by a shot meant for him and who has been working too much in the years since then, is sent by his captain to a timeshare in Tampa on vacation to avoid burnout. Oh, the excitement he finds on his vacation...
I wasn't really sure what to expect of this one, but what a great little gem it was. Hot characters, hot sex... what more do you want? But wait, there is more: there's a nice bit of who-done-it running through it all as well.
This is a book where the clues are twisted enough that you are kept guessing to the end. The men are smoking hot and the Florida temperature has never over on the heat created by the two of them when they're on the page together!
