“Not above the law” is the second English book I have read in 2020. I liked reading this book because you could download the audiobook. This tool is very important because as the same time you are reading this book you are listening the associated audio so you can take a look of how the words are pronounced.
In summary, this book is about a murder in Dublin. George Keagan, a lawyer, wakes up in the morning in his bed and he finds blood everywhere in his house. At the same time, a dead body is found by a man walking his dog next at the river.
I have enjoyed the plot of this book. Murders, police and mysteries are always the ingredients for a good book. In that sense all these elements are included in this. The ending of the book is very surprising and I was shocked when I was discovered the truth. The vocabulary is straightforward so this book is easy to read even if you are starting up to read English books. After this second experience, I am much more motivated to read more difficult English books.

I read this book with a student of mine and it has errors…not great for a book that is supposed to prepare kids for the Cambridge English exam.

This is part of the Cambridge English Readers series. They're short novels aimed at adult learners of English, and they come in different levels. This is level 3, right in the middle. I read it because I'm an ESL teacher and we have these available for students. They really seem to enjoy them, so I wanted to see what they were like.

I think the writing was pretty good. Simple enough to be a nice stepping stone for learners, complex enough to introduce new vocabulary and carry a relatively complex story. The pacing is good. It's a murder mystery, so there's high interest. The characters aren't super deep, but they're distinct. The plot isn't super twisty, and I guessed the culprit pretty early, but I imagine many learners will be delighted to actually read something like this for themselves.

I found a few unrealistic things regarding police procedure and how easy one character found it to clean all traces of blood from a very bloody apartment. There were also a few errors. For example, at one point a suspect was talking about how she was mad at a lawyer because she had spent three and a half years in prison because of him. When the police asked when last she'd seen the lawyer, she said, "Two years ago, when he sent me to prison." And then the police asked her about a burglary she was a suspect in, which happened eighteen months ago. While she was in prison? Um…either I'm confused or there are some things wrong with that timeline.

These issues are fairly minor if you're willing to just go with it, and I really applaud the author for writing a novel so accessible to learners of English.

I hope people write more books like this.

It is a good book if you have a A2 or B1 level and want to start reading in English, but the narrative is boring and poor sometimes.

Forma parte de una colección de libros en ingles de Cambridge English Readers, son de mucha ayuda con el tema de aprender y familiarizarse con la gramática inglesa y la interpretación. También son historias cortas que resultan muy interesantes.
