Love Letters of Great Men (Volume 2) is a collection of romantic love poems written by leading male historical figures. *** Volume 1 plays a key role in the plot of the US movie Sex and the City. *** This Volume 2 includes love poems written by Matthew Arnold, Alfred Austin, Samuel Alfred Beadle, William Blake, Christopher Brennan, Lord Byron, Robert Burns, John Clare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Henry Constable, William Cowper, Michael Drayton, George Eliot, Thomas Ford, Stephen Foster, Robert Frost, Thomas Frost, Norman Rowland Gale, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Alfred P. Graves, Robert Herrick, Leigh Hunt, Benjamin Jonson, John Keats, Richard Lovelace, Pablo Neruda, Edgar Allen Poe, and William Shakespeare.
Work of the principal of the Romantic movement of England received constant critical attacks from the periodicals of the day during his short life. He nevertheless posthumously immensely influenced poets, such as Alfred Tennyson. Elaborate word choice and sensual imagery characterize poetry, including a series of odes, masterpieces of Keats among the most popular poems in English literature. Most celebrated letters of Keats expound on his aesthetic theory of "negative capability."
This book was not what I expected, nor was it what I wanted. I love a good love letter- long hand letters full of pain, longing, heartache and angst. Love Letter Of Great Men Vol 1, hit the spot. While reading Vol 1, I could see these love sick men with furrowed brows sitting at their writing desk all hunched over pouring out their hearts by chandlelight furiously writing on thick pieces of tear stained paper; and I loved every letter. So, I was very surprised to find that there was another Vol available, Love Letters Of Great Men Vol 2, I was even more surprised to find that Vol 2 was nothing like Vol 1 and it did not contain a single love letter. Vol 2 is a collection of poems, and while I love poetry...heck, I wrtite poetry, regardless, I was not in the mood to read a collection of poems. I suppose you could say a love poem is somewhat of a love letter in and of itself, but I say no, I say these were not love letters and it irritates me that the title says thagt they are. The poems are lovely but as far as collections go, I already have a collection of love poems and frankly I think my collection is better, it's older a, very worn but has all the 'greats' Marlow, Keats, Shakespear and others. So, would I recommend this book? It's poetry. It's thoughtful, heartfelt poetry, so yes, I do recommend reading a few pages, BUT if you're looking to read LOVE LETTERS and you already have VOL 1, then save your money and just reread that.
some of the poems/letters really spoke to me, some i didn’t understand what the heck they were saying ... overall pretty good i’m just a tad too dumb to really grasp some of it
I bought both volumes of love letters of great men after having seen Carrie in SATC reading it in bed alongside Big. And the fact that Big quotes some of the poems in the movie when he writes his emails made it even better. Great books if you love love letters/poetry.
Like others who have commented, I didn't realize this book was all poetry either. I don't tend to care much for poetry, but was surprised to find that I liked several of these. However, between the two volumes, I enjoyed the letters of book one far more.
