Mistress: At What Price?

Rate this book
Mariel and Dane were childhood friends, until the night Mariel left to study fashion overseas, when she discovers, in graphic detail, that Dane doesn't want her the way she wants him. Ten years on, she's back in Australia, a successful photographic model. And Dane is looking better than ever. Too bad, because she's sworn off men. But no-one except Dane knows she's broke, betrayed by her French business partner/lover.

A reluctant Bachelor of the Year, Dane is definitely a no-strings man. Family and commitment are not on his agenda. He wants to concentrate on his professional image rather than his celebrity status and the string of women constantly following his every move. And what better way than to have a regular woman like Mariel on his arm?

Until their passionate nights together lead to much more than either of them intended…

Dane was the childhood friend Mariel could always rely on. They spent a lot of time together, and had many memories, good and bad, that they shared. Mariel had mistakenly thought her teenage self in love wih Dane, pursuing him to his home one night after a first kiss, and found him going at it with another girl in his garage. Dane was upset by her leaving, but even he was not ready to admit to any feelings of forever after, then or in the present.

Mariel has been gone for ten years. Back with her family, broke from an ex-lover and business partner that squandered her fortune, she wants to design mens clothing. Dane is now all grown up and he agrees to help her, as long as she helps him by pretending to be his lover.

Dane and Mariel sizzle together, and it is not long before they are really lovers. Mariel knows she loves him, but Dane does not do commitment or forever after. Will bringing him back together with his father help him learn to love?

A very nice story.

I enjoyed this book.
Having recently started making my way through my old Harlequin/Mills & Boon books I was excited to see that this one was written by an Australian Author. Since this isn’t my first book of this kind, I knew what to expect going into it.
I found parts of the plot really entertaining but others just fell a little flat. I would have loved to have learned more about their childhood friendship as I think it would have helped me connect more to one of both of the main characters.
While the characters had some interesting interactions with each other and relatable emotional responses to various situations, they didn’t feel completely fleshed out as stand-alone characters, and so a lot of this story had to be carried by the writing and saucy elements.
Anne Oliver did a great job with the writing in this book. It was clear and easy to follow, had a good amount of emotion, and was wonderfully paced. Overall this book is what you expect it to be and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of hot escapism.
Mistress: At What Price? by Anne Oliver is a quick and easy read.

Compared to the other novels similar to this, I found this one to be a bit of a loss. It was sweet and all but there was very little confrontation and drama which limited the emotions the characters portrayed.

Una novela rapida de leer con un romance apresurado y el tipico final feliz de bebés y bodas. Nada nuevo.
