John Evangelist Walsh was an American author, biographer, editor, historian and journalist. He was best known for leading a team of 7 editors tasked with creating a condensed version of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
My sister gave me this book after she had read it. She warned me that it could be a bit dry and boring. I have been interested in Emily Dickinson for years, so I decided to try it. Parts of the book were very interesting, but overall, I found it dull. Mr. Walsh does go a long way to convince the reader of his suppositions about Emily's life. I had heard much of this before, but I enjoyed getting some more information. I would not recommend this book except to someone very interested in Emily's life, and someone with a good vocabulary.
It takes a special kind of author to lecture his readers at length about people who make bold but unfounded claims about Emily Dickinson and then proceed to do the same thing a few pages later. As a biography, it's readable, but its inability to substantiate its wild theories do it few favors.
