Everything is looking up for Wes Rhodes. He’s got a double-crystal dungeon in his pocket, two gorgeous women to spend his days with, and more loot than he knows what to do with. But as a certain record label opens up in Chicago, the ghosts of Iris Tucker’s past start looming too close to home. She’s waited fifty years to get her revenge on the man who left her to die in the dungeons, and it turns out there’s all sorts of ways for evil bastards like Billy Harper to exploit the magical crystals again and again. So, it’s time to infiltrate a billionaire’s empire and bring it crumbling to the ground.
This was an extremely intense second book in this series! I really didn't know how far this book would go or if the plans that started in it would carry over into book 3, and I really hope there is a book 3 now cause so much happened at the end of this one, that has me questioning things. Great characters, cool action, and very exciting dungeon scenes.
After my less than positive review of the first part of this series I tried to get into the second part to see if I hadn't been too harsh. I gave up at about 20% in. Perhaps I missed all the good bits, but I thought the start was just too silly. There's (at least in the audio book) a friend to the main characters who is a scholar that can fight like the best, gives all his loot away and continuously shouts in a huge gravely voice?! (Poor voice actor!). The main character's love interest Yasha is still stuck watching Star Wars and eating pizza. And both of these, even though being much better fighters, leave all the decision making up to the main character, Wes, and give him credit for all their accomplishments?! (Clearly Trog and Yasha would be a great pair together, much more interesting than boring Wes!). I get that the girls in this story are set up to be every nerd's biggest dream (a girlfriend who only wants to play roleplaying games with you, eat pizza, watch Star Wars and have sex - yup, that's the dream) but it's all way too artificial, as if not just the time they spend in the dungeon is a game, but also the time spend out of the dungeon is far from real life, and more like a sandbox RPG, a bit like GTA I guess. Also, the slice of life stuff was over the top. Every movement and utterance is written out, from the moment our heroes get out of bed to, well, all throughout their boring days. Anyway, you may like it but I think there's much better in this genre.
So I normally have a pretty firm rule against leaving a review for a book I did not finish, however, in this case, I felt that it was important to leave a review because I think the things that I did not like about this book were intentional decisions. first of all, I was listening to the audiobook And the flow of the story is completely different. I’m pretty sure both narrators changed and they did not bother to read the first book in the series. The accent of some of the supporting characters has changed from sounding like, for example, a Russian accent to an Irish accent, which is jarring And the flow and word choice, and the interaction between the characters is different. I don’t know what happened if it almost feels like a different person wrote this book I don’t know so I’m gonna DNF it and move onto the next thing I still normally like this authors books. I’ve read a few of them so I’ll try again later.
I might try again with the book rather than the audiobook, and the discrepancies might be way less jarring to my immersion. A lot of other readers really seem to enjoy this book so I feel bad about the low rating for the moment.
There are some glaring continuity errors that highlight how sloppy the world building is in this series. In the first book, dungeons have a 3 hour time limit, and became four hours after , but now in the second installment dungeons last two hours which is "twice as long" as it was before.
"I hadn’t really been expecting the dungeon to be so difficult, but then again, it was most likely a quadruple crystal dungeon, so it only made sense." (p. 366), but then a few pages later after leaving the dungeon he finds "a misshapen double crystal on the ground." (p. 378) so which was it? Double? Triple? Quadruple?
Overall, the book feels like LitRPG trappings covering a stock revenge story line.
Another amazing read and novel from Eric Vall. When the first book in this series came out, it was such a novel and unique idea that it caught my attention immediately, and since then I've eagerly been awaiting the second... And was not disappointed.
Find, thrilling and has you constantly turning the pages wanting more! And with that twist at the end, I'm looking forward to it!
I have enjoyed other Fall series in the past but this one feels like a phoned in retread of his other works. He managed to completely forget how much time the dungeons gave between books and also forgot equipment the group had earned. Magic is barely explained and the whole premise of taking out the bad guy in this book was facetious at best. I like the premise of this story but the execution was extremely lacking.
Been waiting ok book 2 for awhile. It was good. Nice new dungeons and cool rewards. Liked the reveals at the end and the new friend fits in pretty well. Hopefully we don't have to wait so long for book 3.
I had been waiting for this book to release and I am very happy with the results. This story is similar to others but different. It is an incredible twist on the "pocket universe" idea and I absolutely love it.
What an amazing book! I loved the story, and the depth of the characters was fantastic! I loved this series, I'm sorry to see the series end, but thank you for such an amazing story!
This was a truly powerful entry in this exciting and fast paced adventure! The challenges our characters faced and the climactic event within make this hard to put down! I eagerly await the next one!
Although the MC can be a bit slow at times, the story is awesome. The girls are fierce and smart while also loving. I'm enjoying the series very much. I'm looking forward to book 3.
But I gotta admit there are some perks if you could pull it off. Strong continuation of the series, with some new friends and possibilities. Given how this ends I am very curious to see where the author takes it next.
Such a good series so far! I love the blending of the multiverse, real world, and fantasy dungeons. Really unique and so much fun to read! Eric, if you read this? Thanks for Mimic, he's one of those NPCS you just love.
A very unique version of dungeon diving with very readable characters!! If your looking for a well written and good fast read series this one will fit t
