Raised as the youngest daughter of the Duke of Kendal, Elizabeth learns a devastating truth on his deathbed: he wasn't her father at all. And because the Duke had no sons, his title and fortune must go to his only male heir: a distant cousin who left England for America long ago. Anticipating the man's imminent occupation of her home, Elizabeth anxiously searches for her mother's diary, and the secret of her paternity. . .
Her Unexpected Future. . .
Arriving in London with his seven siblings, William Atherton intends to sell everything and return to his beloved Virginia farm, and his fiancée, as quickly as possible. But as Elizabeth shows William an England he never knew, and graciously introduces his siblings to London society, it becomes clear the two are meant for each other. Soon, Elizabeth finds herself determined to seduce the man who can save not only her family name but her heart. . .
Award winning author Christie Kelley writes Regency set historical romances from her home in Maryland. When not writing, she is usually in the garden, fixing something around the house and surrounded by her two sons and two Siberian cats.
The romance genre is rife with series: series about various family members or a circle of friends finding love. In the tradition of Lisa Kleypas' Wallflower series, the heroine of Christie Kelley's Something Scandalous is part of a group of friends known as the Spinsters' Club. I recently enjoyed another book in this series, Every Night I'm Yours. Its bickering hero and heroine's love/hate relationship had a great deal of chemistry that kept things moving along. Add to that their friends' amazed reactions when these long-time enemies announced their engagement, and it was a great deal of fun. The premise of Something Scandalous, a Regency set in 1817 London, promised a great deal of conflict. At the outset, we learn that the Duke of Kendal has died, leaving behind several daughters, but no male issue. Elizabeth, the one daughter remaining at home, learns that she isn't even the duke's daughter but the result of a liaison her mother had. The identity of Elizabeth's real father determines part of her character arc. Elizabeth also has a couple of irritating distant cousins, Richard and Caroline, who crop up from time to time to annoy her about their evil plans to take over the old duke's estates, should the actual heir fail to put in an appearance. The problem here is the heir lives across the pond in Canada, and while he's been notified of his inheritance, he has yet to turn up and claim it. Have no fear, this is a romance novel. The new duke barges into the house at the end of chapter one, bringing a number of brothers and sisters with him. However, he is not the heir everyone expected, as his own father has recently died. His name is William, he prefers everyone refer to him as Will rather than Your Grace, he is young and handsome, and, above all, uncultured in the ways of the English aristocracy. It will fall to Elizabeth to see to his education, if he is to fit into his new role. Problem is, he doesn't particularly want to fit into his new role. He wants to sell off as many as the estates as he can (and he quickly learns that those are fewer than he expected due to entailment), so he can return to America a rich man. In doing so, he hopes to finally turn the head of a young woman named Abigail, whom he claims as his fiancée, but whose father is standing in the way of their relationship. While Will's father is a member of the English aristocracy, Will has mainly been raised by his American step-mother, who instilled in him all sorts of American ideals, such as all men are created equal and no one ought to live in poverty just so the few privileged can live a more comfortable life. All this conflict ought to make for a compelling read. Unfortunately, this story didn't work for me as well as the other one did. I would have liked for the characters to exhibit a little more depth. They do a lot of talking about their differences, but I never felt as if they were really convinced of their opposing view-points. They said a lot of nice things, without there being much emotional conviction behind their statements. I was also confused on a couple of minor plot points. For example, Will takes his family and Elizabeth on a carriage ride through the Whitechapel district to show them that life in England isn't all fun and games for everyone. While they're there, Elizabeth spots someone who looks an awful lot like her friend Victoria and wonders what she's doing there. That idea gets maybe one other mention, but the issue is never resolved. This is a series, and perhaps that was a bit of groundwork for Victoria's story, but for me it stood out as an unnecessary inclusion. Elizabeth's search for the identity of her real father is presented as something that is close to her heart, because it will redefine her identity, even though she is an adult at this point, she has grown up believing she is a duke's daughter, and he never repudiated her in the eyes of society. When the issue comes up, she becomes very angsty and tearful. But the issue only seems to crop up as the plot demands it. If she was that worried about the repercussions of her father's identity, I would expect to see her thinking about it in down moments where the plot doesn't require an extra boost to keep it moving. Without getting too spoilery, a death at the end of the book struck me as completely gratuitous. It came about as the result of the villains' machinations to get their hands on the ducal estates, at least for their progeny, if not for themselves. In keeping with the other characters, the villains didn't show much depth. Most of their actions revolved around Caroline's single-minded, social-climbing determination that if she can't be a duchess, by gosh and by golly, her son will become the next duke. The book ends with an epilogue that mainly focuses on a minor character. This had me scratching my head. Yes, we see Will and Elizabeth happy, along with the heroes and heroines of the previous books in the series, but all through this story, this minor character has been teased with learning the name of some woman, who... Well, we never learn why, exactly, he needs this woman's name. Only that he wants it, and she's somehow in the room he's just left. I have no clue what this referenced, as it seemed to have little to do with the rest of the story. Again, series, and perhaps it's part of a larger story arc. But it's an arc that made no appearance at all in Every Night I'm Yours, and I still have no clue how it all fits together.
This book was a big step up from the previous one in the series. It's like the author tried something that didn't work, and then went back to the success of the first book. I loved this one almost as much as I loved the first one.
I loved the characters and the chaos that ruled this book, though was not happy about the last obstacle that popped up towards the end, only to end nasty. I like the troubles the author makes her characters go through, though sometimes it feels like she goes a step or two too far.
Regardless, you'll love this book, and you'll have the next one in the series lined up in no time.
Liked it. Had enough interesting things going on and chemistry was good, but some of the plot lines seemed to be forced. It was enjoyable in the end and I was torn between 3 and 4. I guess the deciding factor is that I would not push it on friends and only recommend it to hard core historical romance fans.
two think i like about this book. there is some couple who have an open marriage that's true. but most of them can't last long in their married. it is not the way God intents in married life. and the second thing is... women do make sex as a tool to control their husband and that is wrong. if we really love our husband we should make love on to make our husband loves us more
i know in real life some marriage couple have an open marriage. but most of them can not last in marriage. it just not the way marriage is all about. deep down anyone knows that. many women used sex as a tool for control their couple. i think i dont like that either. because we should only make love to make our couple more in love with us. making love is giving not taking
I liked this one... but what I really liked was the secondary character of Somerton. I can't wait for his story. But I do like the heroine finding out her backstory and what a backstory it was!
trus ada 2 hal yg bikin aq gondok nih..... 1. si elizabeth udah diusir william sampe 3x, mbok ya langsung pergi gitu lho ngapain dia bertahan smp diusir lagi....3x lagi... duhhhhh apa ga malu tuh???!!!!!!
Sedikit demi sedikit Will diperkenalkan pada budaya Inggris, society, ton, ball, pesta dansa dsb.
Baik Duke maupun Mary, ibunya Elizabeth, ternyata memiliki rahasia memalukan. Keduanya sering melakukan pesta seks di rumah mereka. Ups... kelakuan bangsawan jaman dulu ada2 aja.
Ohya, yg lucu itu Somerton yang "dipaksa" membantu Sophie ternyata dijanjikan sesuatu sama Sophie. Sophie menjanjikan nama seorang wanita untuk Somerton. Siapa wanita itu? Apa hubungannya sama Somerton? :)
What would you do if you find out that you are adopted or that one of your parents isn't your biological parent. Well surprise, surprise, Lady Elizabeth the youngest daughter of the Duke of Kendal (and card carrying member of the Spinster club) is not who she thinks she is, but does it matter when the Duke had accepted her (whilst living) as his daughter so it doesn't matter really in a time before DNA testing. William Atherton shows up after a living in America for most of his life. BAM! He finds out he is the new Duke of Kendal and super rich so he can finally take care of his 7 younger siblings. Elizabeth just wants to be loved and accepted, something that never happened in the previous Duke's family (Even though they are her half-siblings so be definition; family). So after William with his many siblings move into the Ducal London house with Elizabeth, the usual equation formulates, man + woman = sexy time. Next thing you know they should be hearing wedding bells, but no, Elizabeth is stubborn because she thinks Will is still in love with his ex-fiance Abigail. There is some heavy whiskey drinking, a brothel and more sexy time before these people finally deal with their issues and officially declare their love to each other. Communication is so terrible in these historical English romance novels that I'm starting to doubt that they actually understand the English language. I always feel relatively sane and normal after reading some of these crazy romance stories. 2 stars
Here I thought the story of the second book is too heavy. I can't tell for certain if this book is better than the second book but I still insist the latter contains a very good story contrary to what other readers think. There are things in this book that kind of disturbed me. First, I think the timing of Will realizing he's inlove with Elizabeth is a bit too early. It doesn't seem to be real for me. Second, the relationship of the duke and Elizabeth's mother. That really disturbed the heck out of me! I mean, over a bonnet she would do that? But that does help add more value to the story. Lastly, the death of Abigail, was that really necessary? And they just left after they saw her! That disturbed me a great deal especially that it then proceed to the wedding which I can't seem to swallow because I still can't recover from that dreadful event. But nevertheless, it was a good story.
My matchmaking is for naught. I really thought it would be cute to have Sophie and Anthony to be paired which is now impossible because they're, yah (I won't spoil those who haven't read yet). Oh, I have no future in matchmaking. The woman you are searching for is in the room you just left I can't understand clearly that statement. Is Sophie the owner of the name he desperately wanted to get or is some other woman which would be her match? Victoria? I don't know. But now, I bet for Sophie and Nicholas. I actually thought first they would suit but I just thought "the matchmaker and her assistant" is amusing. Well, I hopelessly hope for their story.
*tiba2 mood ngeriview ku ilang, selebihnya baca sendiri deh*
****tiba2 inget, mo spoiler kl Sophia n Antony itu kakak adek muahahahaa...
I just loved this book. It was one of my favorites so far. The story line was really good. Elizabeth and William were both strong and very likable and had great chemistry with some hot and steamy sex to boot. Loved that he had all those siblings it added to a great story.
There are 5 books in this series: Book 1: Every Night I'm Yours Book 2: Every Time We Kiss Book 3: Something Scandalous Book 4: Scandal of The Season Book 5: One Night Scandal
I listened to this book via audible as I read along and the narration is good if you listen to it on 1.25 speed.
Makin penasaran ma kisah Sophie n Nicholas, sayang terbitnya pasti setelah kisah Anthony & Victoria :(
Ga nyangka org jaman dulu, perkumpulan mesumnya byk juga, mana aneh2 lagi, para bangsawan pula pelakunya, ga beda jauh ma pejabat2 sekarang XD
I love lost heir stories and paired with Kelley's great writing, this novel is not just hard to put down but an absolute pleasure to read. My only issue with it was the alternative 'love' story, which led up to an ending I didn't expect and wish was worked out a little more. I felt as if it had been thrown in there just for the sake of it.
A very simple, ho-hum read. I liked the idea of an American/Canadian inheriting the ducal title but the story was too cardboard. And although Will and Elizabeth were likeable, character development was lacking, especially with Will's siblings. 2.8 stars
I borrowed this from my library and I just perused it. It was a nice story and I appreciated how the hero and heroine needed each other in more ways than they thought.
