Isa rin siyang magaling na guro na binigyan ng parangal bilang pinakamahusay na Assistant Professor ng College of Arts and Letters sa UP Diliman, Most Outstanding Faculty sa Polytechnic University of the Philippines, at ng isang Writing Grant mula sa UP Office of the Chancellor at Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs noong 2003.
Sa taong iyon din siya hinirang bilang Most Outstanding Alumni for Literature and the Arts ng Hagonoy Institute noong Diamond Anniversary nito.
I used to wonder why Jun Cruz Reyes claims to be in the hot list of the military in his area. Maybe that is an overstatement. Maybe the right description is that he is "being watched" by the military. This is described by him in his latest book, Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid at ang Authobiography na Mali: Isang Imbestigasyon (4 stars) that read last year and liked sufficient enough that I decided to be a completist of his books.
His award-winning work, Etsa-Puwera (4 stars) that won the grand prize in the Filipino Novel category in the Centennial Writing Contest sponsored by UP in 2000 is a political literary work but it is far from his seminal works on the militarization of the socio-political spheres of the country in his two other masterpieces: Utos Ng Hari At Iba Pang Kuwento (3 stars) and Tutubi, Tutubi, 'Wag Kang Magpahuli Sa Mamang Salbahe (3 stars). However, all of these, in my mind, are not enough for him to catch the attention of the military in Bulacan or the country for that matter.
For me, what those earlier books failed to answer was adequately covered here. This book is about a young comrade of the CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army) in the 70's to 2000's. Armando Teng who also went by the names like Ka Ariong,Ka Cleto or Ka Simeon may not have equaled the stature and mystique by the Cuban guerrilla Che Guevara. However, this book is something that comes rarely in the Philippine literature for this is a biography of a revolutionary leader. You see, in the Philippines, most people who have biographies are either rich people (John Gokongwei), politicians (Senator Juan Ponce Enrile) or athletes (Congressman Manny Pacquiao). In fact, this is the first book I read with a obscured rebel as the subject matter of the book published by a big university like University of Santo Tomas.
The life story of Armando Teng is very detailed here and I could not help but get the impression that either Jun Cruz Reyes is really a brilliant and meticulous researcher or that he indeed has "connections" with the CPP-NPA. Why? He has the knack on knowing and writing the ins and outs of the life of a revolutionary leader. Like his latest biography, Ka Amado (4 stars), Amang (as he is fondly called by his fans and students) Cruz Reyes writes fluidly and brilliantly like he wants for his readers to experience the person like the reader is just standing near his subject as he grows up from being a small boy to his deathbed.
The storytelling is unpredictable. For example, Amang did not withhold the death of Teng by revealing it only at the end. In the middle, Amang already mentioned it and so I thought that it would be anticlimactic. Many neophyte biographers would not dare do that. I thought that Amang conveniently did that without having to have revealed everything too soon because he felt competent that he would hold the interest of his readers. You know what, it worked! What made me keep on reading? His beautiful and skillful storytelling style. He detailed his death in the end and he surprisingly has two hidden pages of the actual photos of Armando Teng. It was like having shown photographs of your pen pal or phone pal in the end after falling in love with that person.
Another brilliant work from one of my favorite Filipino authors. My last of him (I think). I am now a Jun Cruz Reyes completist! Yes!
