About the author

Isaac Bashevis Singer was a Polish American author of Jewish descent, noted for his short stories. He was one of the leading figures in the Yiddish literary movement, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978.
His memoir, "A Day Of Pleasure: Stories of a Boy Growing Up in Warsaw", won the U.S. National Book Award in Children's Literature in 1970, while his collection "A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories" won the U.S. National Book Award in Fiction in 1974.

Wspaniała opowieść o nieistniejącym już świecie polskich Żydów końca XIX wieku, ich Warszawie i rozterkach związanych z asymilacją, a w zasadzie życiu w szpagacie pomiędzy polskością, a chasydyzmem w kilku pokoleniach. Nie wiedziałem, że jest to druga część Dworu, więc już od pierwszych stron zostałem wrzucony prosto w wir wydarzeń nieznanej mi dotąd społeczności i oryginalnych bohaterów. Czyta się świetnie, a ostatnie rozdziały i wewnętrzny monolog postaci, przede wszystkim Azriela, są czyms fantastycznym. Na pewno niebawem sięgnę po Dwór i później po inne powieści Singera, bo ta urzekła mnie absolutnie.

The Estate is the second part of the Manor. Heroes of Manor get old, move to other countries, struggle and die. Singer shows the magic of life on the example of his people - Jews and their hart fate in Russia, Prussia, France in the end of 19th and begining of 20th ceturies. The book is very entertaining and makes you to read more and more to know about the heroes of this novel. One interesting sentence from Talmud - "Changing the place - you change your fate" - This is the essence of our searching of God, hapiness and stillness. Strongly recommend!

I really enjoyed this saga about 19th century Polish Jews. It was written pre Holocaust and pre state of Israel and it's quite poignant and sad to read about a world that is mostly lost. Parts of it were extremely funny and although I think this is a sequel to another book it didn't really matter as there wasn't much of a linear plot. I'd like to read the first book. I really liked many of the characters despite the fact that at times you wanted to scream at them, especially Calman, Eliezer and Clara. Great stuff and I'll be looking for the author's other work.

Brilliant epic about several Jewish families. Insightful depiction of life and the Jewish community in 19th century Poland, USA, and even Palestine. One gets an idea about the challenges the Jews had to face in the pre-war period: the modernisation of sciences and society, the conflicts within the Jewish community, the increasing antisemitism, etc.

Bravo, Isaac Singer. This book is my favorite of all of his works and I seem to have read it at exactly the right time. Lots of fireworks at the end. But read "The Manor" first.

Min recension av den fristående föregångaren Jacobys hus slutade med ordet 'upplösning'. Orden för Godset är 'sammanbrott' och 'försoning'. Boken består av personporträtt, personer som har släktskap till varandra men sprida och med helt olika öden. Kärlek kommer och går. Vilsenheten består. Vad är människans roll och mening och dess försök att fylla ut detta tomrum med tro, socialism, nihilsm, materialism etc. Som inte 'löser' frågan. En av huvudfigurerna Ezriel återvänder i boken till chassidismen och försonas i denna med sig själv. Men samtidigt för boken en dialog om judendomens inåtvändhet med konsekvens att starkt troende judar inte 'deltar i' samhället. Men å andra sidan är de förtryckta och i diaspora och har bara religionen att vända sig till. Eller?

En bok med öppna trådar och en dialog om en tid i omvälvning. Om människors vilsenhet och deras försök att göra något åt det.

Maybe 3.5. An important and complex book as it chronicles the chaotic, transforming, and dangerous world of late 19th century Polish and Russian Jewry. But, to be honest, I enjoyed it less than I did The Manor, in which I was immersed and more interested in the world of my grandfathers' grandfathers. This time, there were so many characters with intertwining lives and experiences that I often felt a bit confused about who was who. This is a tangled and complex world and it was, ultimately, a bit difficult for me to stay interested. I wished I had enjoyed it more because IBS is a very important storyteller.

Druga część dyptyku Singera, dalsze losy bohaterów Dworu. Główne postaci to Klara, córka Dawida Kaminera oraz Azriel, zięć Kalmana Jakobiego. Dużo podróży z Polski do Stanów Zjednoczonych i z powrotem, a niewiele szczęśliwych wydarzeń. Dobrze się czyta.

Najlepiej zapamiętam Azriela, który racjonalnie zaufał nauce i filozofii, porzucając wiarę ojców, by później toczyć w sobie walkę o to, jaką drogą kierować się w życiu. Więcej wiedzy to większa odpowiedzialność i więcej wątpliwości.
Bardzo ciekawe spojrzenie na środowisko socjalistów i rewolucjonistek oraz wszechobecny antysemityzm.
