Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at School: Educating Students with NLD, Asperger Syndrome, and Related Conditions

Rate this book
Most teachers will at some point come across a child with nonverbal learning disabilities, and this practical and informative book will be invaluable in helping them to help such children to achieve their full potential in the classroom. Topics such as finding the right school, curriculum modifications, and social and emotional issues experienced by children with NLD are covered. However, the bulk of the book outlines specific teaching strategies, from how to deal with essay questions, to tips on helping the student master long division and ideas for improving reading comprehension. The author defines and discusses concepts such as frontloading and a cooperative learning environment, and discusses how they benefit the student with NLD.

So yes, I do have to point out that probably the vast majority of the presented suggestions and ideas found in Pamela B. Tanguay’s Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at School: Educating Students with NLD, Asperger Syndrome and Related Conditions actually are simply and basically total common sense, and really should be used and considered by ALL teachers in ALL classes and both from kindergarten to grade twelve and at the post secondary college and university level. Now I unfortunately do not have my copy of Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at School: Educating Students with NLD, Asperger Syndrome and Related Conditions on hand and even to be easily located, but yes indeed, in particular the section on suitable tests and exams for NLD children and teenagers often really makes me shake my head in consternation and frustration, since many of the negative, problematic and indeed even totally unacceptable examples of tests and exams to be actively avoided (and as presented by Pamela B. Tanguay) and that tend to be, that might well be majorly confusing, these are indeed and truly very much like the types of tests that tended to often confuse and massively frustrate me at school (basically not enough white space, weirdly penned but supposedly humorous questions that are somehow meant to be imaginative, but well, in a test situation, especially for a subject one might not excel at, strange and overly quirky questions are generally NOT appreciated and are in my opinion also really not to be even considered, as they do tend to unnecessarily confuse, befuddle and make annoyed).

And finally, I am also pretty well sure that I had in fact reviewed Nonverbal Learning Disabilities at School: Educating Students with NLD, Asperger Syndrome and Related Conditions previously (probably in 2013 judging from the original comments, but really not entirely sure). But yes, when I clicked on the book title just now, my original review seemed to have done a magical disappearing act. So I guess that I have also been attacked by the Review Eating Goodreads Monster! Pretty darn infuriating, and indeed I now also do very much understand and realise how legitimately peeved and frustrated other GR friends who have had this happen to them have felt and do feel, as this kind of “reviews suddenly being made to disappear” for no legitimate reasons really should NOT happen (and yes, it also makes for much extra work, as most of us likely do not always tend to store their reviews offline).

Excellent resource for public, private or homeschooling parents. This book gives helpful information on how NVLD students process information and the best strategies for teaching them. Clear writing, visuals to illustrate concepts, helpful examples. The best part - end of chapter summaries! Highly recommend!

It's helpful to glean tips, but very generalized and the pedagogy is very outdated.
