Bound By Temptation

Rate this book
The second book in the fabulous Masters family series from bright new romance star Lavinia Kent’s, Bound by Temptation is the tale of an arrogant, self-assured gentleman with a strong sense of propriety who is tempted by a scandalous young widow. A wickedly delicious “opposites attract” love story, Bound by Temptation is darkly fun and wonderfully sensual—a sensational follow-up to Lavinia’s A Talent For Sin, which inspired Lisa Kleypas to exclaim, “I was captivated by every page.” Stephanie Laurens fans take note!

I live in Washington, DC with my husband, kids, two cats and a changing menagerie of other small beasts.

I worked in both the arts and in the business world before giving into my love of story telling after the birth of my oldest -- although it wasn't until after the birth of my youngest when I suddenly had full-time childcare that it all came together for me.

I love discussing books -- almost any books at any time.

One of my great joys is having my children get old enough that we can all read the same things and talk. I am so happy that YA is the flourishing world that it is.

And of course I love Romance. I started back with Kathleen Woodiwiss and Johanna Lindsay and have never given them up since -- although there were a few slow spots along the way.

Usually I really like the Alpha male guy who thinks he's always right but is brought to his knees because he loves this women when he shouldn't. But this time I though Masters was annoying as hell. Both of them where. Clara was suppose to be some scandalous women, but she was always so bothered by when Master's treated her scandalously and called her out on it. Whatever I pretty much skimmed to all the good parts, which was the only redeeming quality was the "love" scenes were actually written very well. I don't think I'll be picking up anymore of Kent's books.

Some spoilers!

I was disappointed with this book and never felt passionately that these characters should get together or fall in love. I love that Clara is a smart, worldly woman with independence and her own opinions. I also like that she is older than the usual leading lady, but I don’t feel very strongly one way or another about Masters. I didn’t buy their relationship and kept wondering if something would change to make it more genuine. The ending felt rushed and it left me wondering how the two characters learned to like each other. That being said, I am a real fan of Lavinia Kent, but this just missed the mark.

– I was excited when I came across this book in the bookstore. On the first page she’s waking up tied to a bed and has no idea how she got there but she doesn’t panic because it wasn’t the first time she’d woken to find herself tied up. How much fun is that? It’s only too bad the rest of the book didn’t live up to the first page.

I had many problems with this book starting with the heroine. She’s a worldly woman who has had several lovers since becoming a widow and that’s all fine and good – the issue is she has sex with the hero and not once, not ONCE, did she think about disease or birth control. He doesn’t ‘pull out’ yet she’s very blase about it and that doesn’t ring true to the character. Her step-son is an earl and he’s engaged to a woman who’s father is the very picture of respectability. She goes on and on (and ON) about not causing scandal, behaving like a proper Countess until he marries. Yet she has sex with the hero and never blinks about the possibility of getting pregnant or picking up a disease.

The biggest problem I had with Bound by Temptation is that neither character was likable. The heroine is selfish and utterly self-centered to the point of being a complete bore. The hero is rude, domineering and so completely short-sighted that it’s impossible to conceive that he managed to improve upon his holdings to the point that they’re no longer in the red. That kind of work takes a man of vision and Masters simply isn’t. Three-quarters of the way through the book and they still can’t have a conversation without annoying each other, not to mention the fact that even they don’t like the other.

Bound by Temptation had a good premise but is in need of serious editing as I found numerous errors that jarred me out of the story. On one page the hero is wearing only a shirt yet four paragraphs later he took off a jacket. Then there were odd word choices such as ‘hankering’, a term that is historically correct, but not one a Countess in the Regency era would use.

I was disappointed in Bound by Temptation and didn’t finish the book nor would I recommend it. ~ Cerise, www.ireadromance.com

"Clara, the Countess of Westington, is one of the ton's most scandalous women.

"Jonathan Masters has spent his life striving to be one of its most respected members.

"Of all the beds in London, she had to wind up tied to his."

The start of the book got me immediately, but then it went downhill. I liked our heroine - not traditional, independent, smart, older. But, I didn’t like the hero very much. It was hard to picture them together. I stopped at about 2/3 the way through after I began skimming.

It’s part of a series and I’m not too invested to read them all.

Best of the series (though don't expect any kink because of the title and opening scene) Masters and Clara worked for me and their story moved at a good pace without too much angst. Masters was a bit uptight and very much a man with ideas of the period which might be a problem for some, but I liked how he interacted with Clara and how we learn to see his viewpoint (and he learns to see Clara's).

A merry widow (these books are full of merry widows) is bound by temptation...and her stockings...to a stranger's bed? Oh, whatever could have happened? Who is this man and why does he think she has stolen his watch? The sequel to _A Talent for Sin_, this book moves in many unexpected directions, much like the hero who is looking for his sister.

Interesting beginning--Clara tied to Masters' bed. At first, Masters isn't the romantic lead, I would root for. But as more of his story is told, I began to understand why he made poor choices. Both Clara and Masters transform their personality and learn to make compromises, which made them more believable and compelling.

Not the usual playful romance, but, the teasing and roundabout romantic plot is refreshing.

A bit disappointing. Started good but fell off slightly.
I love Lavinia Kent books very much, but this failed to make me laugh or cry, or feel anything.
