The St. Louis Mavericks are having the best season in team history. On pace for a pro hockey record, the unexpected death of their captain and star player knocks them off course in ways they never expected.

Weston

My world was turned upside down the day Ben Whitmer died. Best friends since junior hockey, Ben was like a brother to me. My voice of reason and a grounding force on and off the ice. But as heartbroken as I am, I don’t have the luxury of grieving his loss.

Not only do I have to hold our team together, I was named guardian of the two young children Ben and his wife left behind. Well, not just me—me and his wife’s best friend, Hadley. We’ve been left with the impossible task of deciding which of us will raise the kids, but there’s no way I’m letting that uptight ball buster have them.

Lines are drawn, but they begin to blur as I find out there’s more to Hadley than I thought. A lot more.

Hadley

I can’t take the place of my beautiful best friend in her children’s lives. But I love them so fiercely that I’ll do whatever it takes to raise them the way their parents wanted.

Wes Kirby is an obnoxious womanizer, and I won’t let him take Ben and Lauren’s children from me. Deciding to temporarily live together in our friends’ home, we attempt to provide the kids stability while we figure out which of us is better suited to raising them.

As we learn parenthood together, my enemy Wes slowly becomes something different. Something more. And I’m left wondering not only if I’m enough for the kids, but if Wes and I are enough to last.

Oh, I had a good time with this one! If you have followed my reviews for any amount of time, you probably already know that I am a sucker for a good hockey romance. What can I say? So when this book made its way to me and I saw that it was a hockey romance set in my hometown, I knew that I would have to give it a try. This story grabbed my heart early on and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would work out.

Wes and Hadley have known each other since their best friends, Ben and Lauren, fell in love and married. As much as their friends had hoped that they would hit it off as well, Wes and Hadley barely tolerate each other. When Ben and Lauren are killed in an accident, Wes and Hadley are both devastated and shocked to learn that they have been named guardians of the two small children.

I really liked Wes and Hadley. It was obvious how much they both cared for Ben and Lauren’s children and I loved how they quickly learned to work together to make the household work. They have a long history of disliking each other but they learn a lot about each other once they start living together and becoming part of a family unit. They had fantastic chemistry together and I liked how they grew to trust each other’s opinions. The kids in this story were great and played a huge role in the story. I also loved the men on Wes’s hockey team and how they were willing to lend a hand whenever they could.

I would recommend this book to others. This was a very well-done hockey romance with fantastic characters. I would have loved to see a little more of St. Louis in the story but that didn’t have an impact on my enjoyment. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series!

I received a digital review copy of this book from the publicist/authors.

Initial Thoughts
I just can't seem to say no when someone offers me a hockey romance. This was fun and I really liked Wes and Hadley.

Disappointing read

I was super excited to read this book as I won it as part of a Goodreads giveaway. It really pains me to write this review as I enjoy Brenda Rothert's books as a whole (this is my first time Kat Mizera).

Characters: D
My first impression of Wes was unfavorable. The very first meeting between Hadley and Wes, Wes makes an inappropriate comment, which tainted their experiences going forward and I thought he was a dick. Then in the first chapter Wes is hooking up with a woman on page, which I can’t stand. However, Wes turned out to be the more likeable of the pair after that (with only a couple of face palm moments in between). Hadley, however, ruined this book for me. She was insufferable, totally unlikeable, and never redeemed herself. She was always quick to paint Wes in a negative light and expect the worst from him. She was hyper critical of him from the get-go thinking she knew better in taking care of the kids. Making decisions on how things were going to play out with no discussion, and making it seem like he's incompetent, couldn’t even keep his lust under control and was going to jump every woman who crossed his path. I will say some things were justified, but he more than made up for it over the years and especially after gaining custody of the kids. He was all in and committed to raising the kids in the best way possible, which I absolutely loved.

I had a problem with Wes and Hadley as a couple. For the first 96 pages Wes only has negative thoughts about Hadley and how much of a b**ch she is. Then all of a sudden he’s lusting after her and watching her heaving bosom. It would have been more realistic if he had thoughts in between about her being attractive if she wasn’t a ballbuster or something. But instead it was hate then lust out of nowhere, and he claims he liked her all along…which I find unbelievable. At 60%, after the start of their sexual relationship, there was also a problematic moment where Hadley still doesn’t trust Wes, but that moment is totally glossed over. And at 86% she tells him she would fight him for custody if he shut her out. I felt it was way too late in the story for her to still be having those super negative thoughts about him. Especially given this particular HEA.

Plot: C
I really liked the premise of this book. Kind of like a book version of Life as We Know It. I did feel empathy towards their situation, enjoyed the glimpse into the hockey dynamics (can’t wait for Lars' story) and a couple of aaw moments. But the character execution left much to be desired.

Heat: C+
Nice heat factor with spicy descriptions of non missionary. However this 28 year old has never had good sex and Wes, of course, is the only man to fulfil her needs *rolls eyes*

Overall not a fan of this book. Not sure if the reason is the writing duo or what. I will be reading the next story to give it another chance and I really want to read about Lars (because he was so great with Annalise).

Pretty good story...I almost teared up a couple of times. But something was a little off for me regarding Wes and Hadley’s relationship. They went from long time hate to lust rather quickly (especially Hadley)...don’t get me wrong, I generally liked Wes, but Hadley sometimes annoyed me.
I enjoyed meeting Wes’s teammates, so hopefully there will be books for them. And oh yes, little Annalise was a pistol!

These two ladies are magic! #truth

This is one of those storylines that can go off the rails quick if the wrong choices are made and if I could scream into a bullhorn right now how ridiculously on-point every choice these ladies made for this story were, I’d do it in a heartbeat. They are magic, both as individual authors and a team. I am seriously blown away by this story. Not so much because I don’t expect greatness from these ladies, but because they had me on an emotional roller-coaster that never once went to far this way or that way. It’s a perfectly balanced story and I mean I don’t even know what to say about it…

There are so many hidden lessons in this story that I don’t know where to begin. That’s a lie, yes I do. Children … they are one of the things in life you will sacrifice more than you even knew you had for, even when you think you wouldn’t. #betme And it is they that made this storyline so hopeful and full of heart.

This story isn’t really fiction. Not only does it happen, it happens often. And it is heartbreaking to know that because what doesn’t happen (maybe) that of ten or always is the outcome. I love how these ladies intertwined the struggles of the children with the struggles of the romance journey and made it flow as one. There is not one without the other and it was real to me. I felt it. It was happening and I was right there to witness it. GAH, you guys really have to read this book.

I’ve read both these authors individually, but this is my first time as a team, and they are a powerhouse. I enjoy their work as individual authors, but this was more. I can’t quite come up with the words, but magic is as good as any to describe this story. I hope this series runs the course of most of the series these two ladies have written because I do not see myself ever tiring of reading their magic!!

Go do the thing now. I’m gonna be upset if this book doesn’t get over a thousand reviews in the near future! Available everywhere ➡

Ben and Lauren have the kind of love that other people are jealous of. They met in college and were married soon after graduating. They now have two adorable children and Ben is the team captain of the St. Louis Mavericks. Life could not be better… until it is tragically taken from them…

Wes is Ben’s best friend and teammate. When he receives the devastating news of Ben and Lauren’s death he feels like the ground has given out from under him. It simply cannot be true.
Hadley has been best friends with Lauren since they were young, she is her go to person for everything. The news of her passing feels so overwhelming, Lauren was her person, she was as close to her as family and she can’t imagine life without her in it anymore.

Hadley and Wes were chosen to be the legal guardians of the two children and it is a responsibly neither of them are prepared for but knowing that it was what Ben and Lauren wanted, they want to step up and do their best by them. So now they are trying to deal with their own grief, the grief of the children and some push back from grandparents who don’t agree with the will.

As well as all that going on, it would be fair to say that Hadley pretty much despises Wes. She thinks she has him all figured out and from the moment they first met she made her mind up about him. Wes really does seem to enjoy annoying Hadley, it’s so easy to do and she seems to be permanently pissed off with him.

The only thing they are united in is caring for and loving Annalise and baby Benny. Giving them the stability and unconditional love they need as they all figure out their new normal. Wes and Hadley haven’t really had time to grieve themselves, having hit the ground running with dirty nappies, bed time routines and Annaliese asking when mummy and daddy are coming home most days.

Wes is trying to keep his team together as they go from top of the table to rock bottom. The only bright spot is Annalise and baby Benny. Hadley is seeing a new side to Wes, one that she finds quite unexpected but very appealing. When the lines blur and they find themselves caught up in their attraction and lust for each other, reality comes knocking on their door again. Hadley can’t figure out if they are just playing house or if what they have could be a potential future together.

This is a story that had all those feels that I love in a good book. I was turning the pages as fast as I could. Such an emotionally charged story and thought provoking too, especially if you have young children.

This book is such a good read! I could not put it down! Weston is Ben's best friend, best man, his go to bestie, godfather to his children. Hadley is Lauren's best friend, maid of honor and go to bestie, godmother to her children. Problem is Wes and Hadley are like oil and water. They just do not get along, AT ALL! When the unthinkable happens to Ben and Lauren, Weston and Hadley are left as guardians to their two young children. Both Wes and Hadley are grieving so deeply still trying to work and take care of the kids in the best way possible. Eventually they find understanding and solace in one another. This is an emotional ride in such a good way! Life and work and responsibilities come at them hard and fast and NONE of it is easy. Lauren and Ben always said they would make a great couple. Seems it just takes a lot of hard work time to sort through what is truly important. MUST read feel good romance for Fall!

Tbh I got this for free from kindle a few months ago and it’s just been sitting there and I decided to read the books on my kindle instead of trusting book reccs from tiktok (they always suck) and then this ended up being one of my top reads of the year.

Honestly I would’ve rounded up to 5 but at the very end, literally the end of the epilogue the children called their godparents mommy and daddy and ruined it. The girl was nearly 4 when her parents died, she remembered them. She doesn’t need to be calling the people she knew were her godparents and called aunt and uncle mommy and daddy now that her parents are dead.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a story! I loved Wes and Hadley immediately, the chemistry and banter just sparking between them and never dying out.

Brief Summary:
They are both friends to a couple they knew, now deceased, and have to take care of their children for them. Now it's up to who gets to parent who.

My View:
Obviously Wes and Hadley detest each other, because one, enemies to lovers trope, two because they both have preconceived notions about the other. And you know those never make a good impression for the other.person when you wanna impress/make friends with somebody.

But through time and parenting, they realise there is a lot more to the other when first thought. And I loved those moments when they realised how really wonderful they both were as individuals and co-parenting together.

I also loved their slow blossoming romance, and the way they just slowly bonded and found similarities between each other, it was beautiful and heart-melting for me to read and love.

And the children are adorable as hell, wish I could keep them to myself.

Overall, one hell of a brilliant and intricately woven romance, filled with tons of banter, fun, parenting mishaps, and a lot of love to make you helplessly and utterly fall in love with the MCs and the children they are given by fate to take care of.

Hard Fall: St. Louis Mavericks Book One, by Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera is absolutely phenomenal!

If you’re ready for the feels, than this is the book for you.

Rothert and Mizera work magic together. Bringing their readers a storyline that is packed with emotion, action, steam, and yes … love.

Hadley and Wes find themselves in what feels like an impossible situation.

Especially considering that neither one is a huge fan of the other.

But as life will have it, they have to sink or swim, and it’s not just their lives and futures that are at stake.

I love the way Ms Rothert and Ms Mizera let this storyline unfold.

You’ll see depths of emotions, and as a reader, you’ll feel as though you are a part of the battle the characters are immersed in. To not only save their future, but that of the ones they love.

This is truly one book you’ll want to read again and again. Because it reminds us all that life is fragile and that love really does conquer all.

Especially when you have someone that you know will be your rock no matter what.

Just so you know, it starts with some tears. The ugly cry type, even. For the reader, and the characters. Two lovely people die and leave their kids to their best friends, Hadley and Wes, who can’t stand each other but will have to cooperate to raise them. That was one unusual plot. Loved it.

There were two aspects that were well developped and that I enjoyed very much.

First, the domesticity of the whole setting. How to take care of yound children, what to do and what not to, what’s important and what’s not, and the many mistake you make as a parent–those were a few of the problems Hadley and Wes had to confront and find a solution to. No type of parenting is belittled–except violence and neglect–and the message is that you do your best. That’s what Hadley and Wes have to learn. The whole process was interesting.

The other was the dynamics in Wes’s team. There wasn’t much action on ice in this hockey romance, but that doesn’t mean that hockey wasn’t a big part of the story. After the loss of their captain, the Mavericks have to get back on their skate but something doesn’t work, even with Wes as their new captain. The grief, the struggles, a tiny bit of bullying, the overt conflict between some of the members–but also the friendship and the support to each other. Another family for Wes, in other words. It made me root for the team.

And of course, there’s the love story. Though I loved Wes and Hadley as characters, and they come together in the most beautiful way, I wasn’t a fan of how they go from hate to love. Their distaste for each other came from prejudice and misunderstanding–and some douchey moves–so of course, there was no reason to stay hostile once they really know each other, but I felt it happened too quickly.

But there were so many adorable moments, and very sexy ones too, that I really enjoyed this story. And the introduction of many intriguing characters will make me check out the next books in the series for sure.

Quickie

- Series: St Louis Mavericks #1 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #hockey romance #enemies to lovers #forced cohabitation #surrogate parents
- Triggers: death (but nothing explicit)
- Main couple: Hadley Ellis & Weston Kirby
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + the domesticity with the little kids was adorable
- – the change from hate to lust to love was a bit too quick for me

Have you seen that old Josh Duhamel movie, Life as We Know It? Then you've got an idea of the concept behind this emotional romance - two people who "hate" each other are bonded by their friends, and become co-parents when those friends pass away unexpectedly. I will openly admit that there are MANY similarities between the movie and this book (probably too many), but the storylines have many differences as well. It's a short and sexy, heartfelt romance that will put you through your emotional paces. It's light one minute and sad the next, family-friendly one scene and super steamy right after. As a series starter, this is pretty solid. It's my first time reading something from either of these authors, and I'm definitely curious to see where the series goes next. This is perfect for fans of sports romance who want something a little bit different, that's still quick and sexy.

The story follows Hadley and Wes, two people who are like oil and water. Hadley's best friend and Wes' childhood buddy are married, so they've been a part of each other's lives for years - against their wills. Though their friends always insisted that they'd be perfect together, Hadley and Wes have gotten on each other's nerves since their first interaction. Hadley thinks Wes is an irresponsible playboy (he is kind of a manhoe), and Wes thinks Hadley is an uptight snob (she can be judgmental). So when their friends pass away and leave these two frenemies in charge of their children, it's a major change to both of their lives. As Hadley and Wes get to know each other on a deeper level, they realize that their first impressions might've been wrong.

It's not often that I read a romance with a plot like this one, so it was a welcome change from the norm. I loved Wes once we got to know him better, and Hadley grew on me over time. That's perhaps why this had a slower start for me - neither character is particularly likable at the start (intentionally). As the story progresses, it mixes flashbacks with present day to paint a very different picture. It's still a pretty light, easy, sexy read, but there are some heartfelt and emotional moments to tie everything together. This would've benefited from a longer length and more romantic relationship development; I expected it to be a slower burn, and the transition from hate to love was underwhelming for me. The ending was also very abrupt. But I liked a significant amount of this, certainly enough to check out the next interconnected standalone in the series. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this angsty sports romance.

Let me start off by saying I have read and loved all of Brenda Rothert’s stories. I have not read any stories by Kat Mizera. I’m not even sure if I had heard her name before this book. With that being said, I didn’t truly know how this story would read even though I had high hopes for it.

My emotions were absolutely everywhere in the best possible way! I loved this story from the first few pages where we meet Wes and Hadley. I absolutely enjoyed how much they seemed to hate each other even though their best friends thought they would be perfect together. Those best friends get married and have two kids prior to a drunk driver ending their lives and leaving their children to be cared for by Wes and Hadley. How can they care for these children when they barely get along?!?!
Your emotions will go haywire with this one. I laughed and I cried at a few different parts. Brenda and Kat did an amazing job writing these characters so you would fall in love with them. And Thor! Can hardly wait for more of him.

4.5 out of

This is the first book I've read by this duo though I've read most of Brenda Rothert's previous books. It has a heartbreaking beginning. The team captain of the St Louis Mavericks pro hockey team and his wife are killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. So right from the beginning I knew this was going to be emotional. They had two young children and they requested their best friends raise their two young children.

Wes was Ben's best friend and had been for years. They even played on the same hockey team where Ben had been captain before his tragic death. And Hadley, our heroine was Lauren's best friend. But from the first time they met Wes and Hadley have rubbed each other the wrong way. Hadley plays by the rules whereas Wes is much more relaxed so they knew it would be a challenge to raise the young children. And while Wes lives in St. Louis, Hadley has a high powered job in New York. But they both dearly love the kids and agree to try and make it work, somehow. Hadley begins to work remotely and the two of them move into their friends house so things aren't completely changed and they do their best to work together although it's pretty difficult at first. As they do work together and begin to compromise, they come to appreciate each other, become friends and slowly more.

I love so much about this book. I love seeing them discover the good in each other and seeing them gel and become a family. I also love the Maverick hockey team. Wes is made captain and he struggles in the role. But there is a closeness on the team between many of the players. Seeing Hadley struggle working remotely for a real bitch of a boss was interesting and seeing Wes be there for her was wonderful.

There was an underlying sadness to the book but that's only to be expected and it gave the story added layers. Yet at the same time there was a sweetness to it. This book made me cry at the end and that's a good thing. It means I was emotionally invested and that's what I always hope for when picking up a book.

I already own all four books in this series and have read the second one - review to come. I'm so happy to recommend this book.

This is basically Life as We Know it (you know, the film starred by Katherine Heigl and that funny dude), only as a book. And less funny. And with a sexy hockey player. And with two children.

Annalise is almost four years old, and Benny is six months old, when their parents die in a tragic car accident. Both Hadley and Wes are devastated to know that their best friends are dead, and are shocked to find out that they named them -both of them- guardian of their children.
Of course, it's difficult to take care of two children who just lost their parents, even more if you know almost nothing about parenting (I would totally panic if something like that happened to me). But it gets worse: Hadley and West can't stand each other. They can't have a conversation without it turning into an argument. They HATE each other (yes, just like Katherine Heigl and the dude, in the movie).
So, of course, they eventually become a team and fall in love (LIKE THE MOVIE).

And, you know, I did like the book. But it was a lot like the movie. There was almost nothing original about it. So, my recommendation is: read it only if you enjoyed said movie. If not, then maybe you should skip it.

I enjoyed the story, even though I had tears running down my face from time to time. I enjoyed the setting. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope. I enjoyed Annalise and Lars. Loved all the flashbacks with Ben and Lauren, and the letters that they wrote.

That being said, I didn't like Wes or Hadley, and I definitely did not like them together. Or at least not until the end of the book. Wes just kept saying the wrong things, and he would do so to provoke Hadley. It was immature. Then there's Hadley who was just looking for any reason to pick apart all the things that Wes was doing. She was over the top.

Hard Fall had such potential given the found family/ unexpected parents storyline. Yet it fell a bit flat for me. A lot of that had to do with my dislike of the main characters. I will say that I am looking forward to the next story as it features Lars. He intrigues me.

Universal

United in their grief over the loss of their best friends, Hadley and Wes now have to figure out not only how to co-parent Ben and Lauren's children, but to get along with each other and be strong for those children. From their very first meeting at their best friends' wedding, Hadley and Wes struck sparks off each other, were oil and water, and it was plain to see (as the reader finds out later) that those sparks weren't all just of the dislike type. Now that they're without their friends, and trying to parent their new charges, will the attraction that was hiding under all the animosity, be consummated? Can a relationship borne of grief become stable enough to last?

Hadley loved Lauren like a sister, was close to Lauren's family like they were her own. Now that she's been left guardianship, with Wes, of Lauren's kids, she's overwhelmed. Especially considering the man she has to do it all with is the one man she cannot stand. He gets under her skin purposely, and now she's finding it hard to not lose herself to him and to not just their attraction, but in the comfort he offers, the bond they share over their loss. But, Wes is not sharing his feelings, if he even has any, so she's of the idea that whatever they have isn't enough, that she isn't the one. So they'll be co-parents and nothing more, love their children, but separately. That is, unless Wes takes his head out of his ass (thanks to his awesome parents!) and goes and lays his cards out on the table.

Heartfelt, emotional and sexy, this is a wonderful story. Hadley and Wes were destined for each other, they just had to go through a ton to finally see it. The secondary cast is just as lovable as Hadley and Wes, and I can see myself enjoying this series for a long time to come. Bring on more Mavericks hockey!

4.5 Hadley and Wes Stars

I really enjoyed this book which is the first in a new Ice Hockey Series by Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera. Ms Rothert is a long standing favourite author of mine and she is one of the reasons Ice Hockey Romance is my 'go to' genre in sports romance. Ms Mizera is relatively new to me but after reading this book, I am very keen to read more about the St Louis Mavericks.

This novel features Wes and Hadley. Wes has been best friends with Ben since they were small and they have progressed through hockey together, now playing together for St Louis where Ben is Captain. Ben is married to Lauren who is Hadley's best friend. When Hadley and Wes meet for the first time , it does not end well and they become enemies of sorts.

“Fucking ballbuster,” Wes muttered.
“Asshole,” I fired back, taking a step closer to him.
“Why don’t you go label some shit? Or iron your power suits?”
“Go play with yourself, frat boy.”
“Okay, guys.” Lauren moved to stand between us. “Let’s go our separate ways and not turn our best friends’ engagement party into an episode of Jerry Springer, okay?”

When an unthinkable tragedy strikes and Ben and Lauren are killed in a car accident, Hadley and Wes find themselves the guardians of their best friends small children , Annalise and Benny. Forced together , emotions , and passions, rise and these two slowly start to see each other in a different light.

The characters are beautifully written in this story. Wes is an alpha Hero that is a bit cocky and bold but beneath that sporty arrogance is a loyal guy who is trying to rapidly readjust to caring for two small children and continue to play hockey and be successful. His team are also reeling from losing their Captain. Hadley is also scrambling to maintain a job, cope with her grief and look after two small people. She is a bit prickly and in the push and pull of her relationship with Wes, she definitely is the one who pushes away but I did like her.
Annalise is so adorable. She made me cry and laugh. I definitely needed tissues at times , especially when she talked about missing her Mummy and Daddy.

Annalise is so entertaining too. There is a scene where the St Louis players pitch in to help with her Superhero Birthday party.

Coming up behind him was our team’s enforcer, a huge Swede named Lars Jansson. Six feet six inches, with long blond hair, he was a shy, quiet guy who tended to keep to himself off the ice. I didn’t think he’d ever been to any of the team’s family parties, and Annalise had probably never seen him in person before. “It’s Thor,” she whispered, her eyes wide as saucers.

I cannot wait to read Lars's story...

Great story with good plot, low angst, hot romance and characters that I want to hear more about. I am officially Team Mavericks.

This book had all the emotions you could ask for. Relationships, whether it is friendship or romantic, are always hard to maintain, but Wes and Hadley never expected their lives to change the way they did. He is best friends with her best friends husband so they are always in each others orbits. Unfortunately, they are like oil and water. From their first meeting in college up until tragedy strikes they argue at every interaction.
I liked Wes right away and even though his first comment to Hadley was inappropriate, I felt like she judged him too harshly. She based her entire opinion about him on that one comment and never really gave him a chance after that. Even if she was hurt in that past, not giving someone the opportunity to prove they aren't one comment is not alright. He always responded in kind, but I believed there was more behind his responses.
When they are forced to be around each other, due to their friends' untimely deaths and being given custody of their children, they each start seeing the other differently. I loved how he made her feel beautiful and appreciate, which she had never had. I also adored how he grew up so fast after losing his best friend. He was a partier, but once the children came into his picture (as his responsibility) he really stepped up.
They go through a lot of ups and downs throughout the book and she has a tough decision to make. There were a few times I wanted to shake her to help her see that what she wanted now might not be what she thought she wanted in the past. The letters they received from their friends were heart-wrenching and gave light to what they were thinking. I loved this book and can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.

I really wasn't sure about this one as it started out. Hadley and Wes were so caustic together, it was painful to read any scene with them in it. I was stunned when Ben and Lauren died, so didn't see that coming in a romance book. I hated how Wes and Hadley were then left to pick up the pieces of Ben and Lauren's kids, it would be horrible in any situation, but more so because this was out of left field, Ben and Lauren were so young and it didn't help that Wes and Hadley couldn't get along. The way that the kept sniping at each other drove me nuts, they had bigger issues to deal with than that.

Slowly things changed, the two were able to see the other in a better light, to see that while they didn't "parent" the way the other would, not to mention Ben and Lauren, the kids were doing ok. Slowly they were able to work together to make things work better for them. And slowly seeing the other person amped up the attraction between the two. By the time that they acted on the attraction I was rooting for them. They had a bit of time were things were great, then it all went to hell due to some selfish grandparents.

My heart broke when things splintered. While reading this one there were so many times I found myself reading through tears at some things that Annalise said, but what she said and did now was tough to read. I was glad that while this was going on Wes decided to really fight and Hadley figured out what was really important to her.

This one ended in a great way! I loved the last letter, loved that through everything Ben and Lauren had the last word.

5 star Review Hard Fall (St Louis Mavericks 31) by Brenda Rothert & Kat Mizera

Where do I start? What a fantastic start to St Louise Mavericks, in what I fully expect to be a winning series. Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera are authors I have read and loved individually Together these two wrote a phenomenal story that drew me in and held me captive from the first word to the last.

The story and characters were engaging and I found myself drawn to the story that they wove about Weston (Wes) Kirby and Hadley Ellis. Wes and Ben Whitmer were best friends as were Hadley and Lauren, until tragedy struck. Suddenly, Wes finds himself joint guardian with Hadley to their children with no time to grieve.

This was an emotional story that tugged at my heart strings and pulled out so man emotions whilst I was reading. Hadley and Wes have always tolerated one another because their best friends were married to one another but now they will have to pull together to offer support and comfort and a stable life to Annalise and Benny.

You could feel their pain as both Wes and Hadley struggled with their grief whilst trying to do what was best for the children as well as having to contend with the attraction that develops between them.

There were moments where I was brought to tears and moments were I smiled like a lunatic. The camaraderie and support that his fellow players offered to them also added an additional layer to my enjoyment of the story.

The writing was strong and I have no idea who wrote what or where one author stopped and the other took over, such was the seamlessness of their writing. From start to finish Ms. Rothert and Ms. Mizera wove together a story that I simply could not put down.

Broken hearts…

Including mine. Wes and Hadley, and two beautiful children, literally broke my heart. I never seek out a book that will make me cry but these authors made me do it… And I’m so glad I did!

Dealing with the loss of their best friends was he** on earth but that didn’t stop the world from spinning. Wes and Hadley were now responsible for their best friends’ toddler and baby. They had to put their differences aside for more than five minutes. They could do it, right? Um, right?

They tried their best. It took a lot of work but they struggled through every challenge and soon looked to each other for support. This was a ‘stay up until the wee hours of the morning to finish’ read. I cried buckets of tears. I internally growled at Wes. I mentally hugged those kids so hard. And so wanted to offer Hadley a helping hand. And a few hours of sleep.

With professional hockey as the backdrop, I felt every dramatic high and low. And once I dried my tears I closed the last page with a smile on my face. So good! ~Diane, 5 stars

Omg!!! I love to read books by Brenda Rothert. Hard Fall is the first book in a brand new series. This is Wes and Hadley's story. I couldn't put it done at all. It drawn me into from the very first page. When they met the first time it was at their best friends party. They always had something to say about each other. Until that nite, everything changed for them in a blink of an eye. This story had me crying so hard throughout it. It is definitely worth reading this story. My heart went out for Wes, Hadley, and those sweet babies. If you ever needed a good hard ugly cry then this is the one for you. You will definitely need some tissue handy. It is also filled with family, good friends, sweet, sexy and of course love. I can not wait to read more from this series. Keep up the amazing work!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I will not tell the events of the story.

I love Brenda’s books and I absolutely adore Kat’s series so when you put them together you could quite possibly get a series full of fireworks. The first book in their St. Louis Mavericks series, Hard Fall, has lit the fuse. Now I have to wait for the next explosions, I mean books.

Do Wes and Hadley really love to hate each other or is it their way to avoid hating to love each other. Only their best friends, Ben and Lauren, really know that answer. Unfortunately, it takes a terrible accident and some smart pre-planning from Ben and Lauren to lead Wes and Hadley to some soul searching and the future that was destined to be…for all of them.

I absolutely adored this first installment of the St. Louis Mavericks by Co-Authors Kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert. I love a good enemies to lovers story but this one has a sweet twist that really kept me hooked. Haley and Wes have unbelievable chemistry and watching them fall in love was a joy. I loved the sub characters and I can't wait to see who's story we'll get next in the second book.

Your heart will never be the same!

Hard Fall wastes no time ripping your heart out. You know it's going to happen because that's the whole premise of the book but the words that Brenda Rothert and Kat Mizera have put together pull out so many raw emotions throughout the whole book. I couldn't put it down - except to grab the tissues to dry my eyes, my face, and blow my nose because that's what ugly cries do. The tragic shock tears, the sad tears that you feel will never end, and even tears that are happy yet are still sorta sad, they're all there.

This book is wonderful and I highly recommend it - just be sure you have close access to tissues! And be ready for a hard book hangover.

Hard Fall

I loved this book! It was sad but also very happy at the same time. I loved Wes and Hadley together, what an adventure their relationship was. The storyline was heartwarming although sad as well, but it was such a great story. I highly recommend this book…loved Lars (Thor) so much. Hope he has a book coming out!!

This is the first book I have read by both these authors, it might even be their first together. It was absolutely awesome. I laughed and I cried and my heart broke just a little bit as well.

I will be honest this story is my absolute favorite trope. I am a mom so I get how hard being a mom can be. Add in the death of someone you love and having to figure things out with someone you don't like and share a complicated past. Then you become an insta mom or dad with a 3 year old and 6 month old. Well lets say its complicated...

In this story this happened to Lauren and Wes. Honestly what these two did was awesome. They literally dropped their entire lives and everything changed in an instant when their best friends died. They didn't just have to become insta parents with someone they did not like but they also had to figure out parenthood while also getting very little sleep.

You would think they had helped from their parents or even the friends who died parents. But they didn't have help. In fact one set of parents makes their lives very difficult. What they did have was an awesome hockey team family and they literally saved them. I loved seeing that happen while at the same time it also caused a lot of tears because the team was in so much pain and you saw that thru how they played their games. But what I loved was how they were not only there for Wes but also Lauren and those two kids and in such huge ways.

This was a story that I think I will be thinking about for many years to come. It is an awesome book for book club. Its well written. It is sad, but also poignant and you will laugh thru your tears as well.

I received a complimentary early release copy of this e-book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is book one of a new series and I am grateful for that, because this book and its realist characters leave you wanting more.

Ben Whitmer is the captain of the St. Louis Mavericks. A new to the league, team. His team although new is getting lots of attention as they are leading the league in points,..by a lot! With a beautiful wife, family and teammates he enjoys playing with life is good- even better that he gets to share all this with is best friend Wes. He and Wes go back, Wes was his best man at his wedding and The Godfather to his children. Wes gets along great with Bens wife Lauren. But maybe not so much with her best friend Hadley.

Hadley lives and works in New York. As Lauren’s best friend she was the Maid of Honor, at the wedding and the Godmother chosen by the Whitmer’s so Wes and Hadley see a lot of each other, but do not see eye to eye. They barely tolerate each other which Ben and Lauren find entertaining.

Then the unspeakable happens and whether they want to be together or not they find themselves having to unite for a common cause. Can Wes hold it together with his career and new found responsibilities? Can be and Hadley find a way to work together putting their differences aside? Are they really that opposite or more alike in ways they didn’t see before? Can Hadley push through her grief and hold together a family while still having. Career?

This intricate storyline sends you on a wild ride of emotions while the action and character development provides a pleasant backdrop to a truly I interesting and easy to read story. As the different writing styles of kat Mizera and Brenda Rothert intertwine and mesh you will not be disappointed, you will be left wanting more.
