Just so you know, it starts with some tears. The ugly cry type, even. For the reader, and the characters. Two lovely people die and leave their kids to their best friends, Hadley and Wes, who can’t stand each other but will have to cooperate to raise them. That was one unusual plot. Loved it.
There were two aspects that were well developped and that I enjoyed very much.
First, the domesticity of the whole setting. How to take care of yound children, what to do and what not to, what’s important and what’s not, and the many mistake you make as a parent–those were a few of the problems Hadley and Wes had to confront and find a solution to. No type of parenting is belittled–except violence and neglect–and the message is that you do your best. That’s what Hadley and Wes have to learn. The whole process was interesting.
The other was the dynamics in Wes’s team. There wasn’t much action on ice in this hockey romance, but that doesn’t mean that hockey wasn’t a big part of the story. After the loss of their captain, the Mavericks have to get back on their skate but something doesn’t work, even with Wes as their new captain. The grief, the struggles, a tiny bit of bullying, the overt conflict between some of the members–but also the friendship and the support to each other. Another family for Wes, in other words. It made me root for the team.
And of course, there’s the love story. Though I loved Wes and Hadley as characters, and they come together in the most beautiful way, I wasn’t a fan of how they go from hate to love. Their distaste for each other came from prejudice and misunderstanding–and some douchey moves–so of course, there was no reason to stay hostile once they really know each other, but I felt it happened too quickly.
But there were so many adorable moments, and very sexy ones too, that I really enjoyed this story. And the introduction of many intriguing characters will make me check out the next books in the series for sure.
